From 52teas

Tea of the Week for December 12, 2016!

Yes, indeed-y, I did another blend combining honeybush and rooibos. I like the way the two together taste: it is nutty and honey-sweet. And I felt like that flavor profile would definitely work to the recipe for this week’s tea: Amaretto Glazed Chestnut! (Don’t worry, you tea-totalers out there, it’s non-alcoholic … and for those of you who have tree-nut allergies, this one’s allergen-free too!)

I flavored my honeybush-rooibos base with essence of amaretto and chestnut and then I added roasted and salted sunflower seeds, freshly shaved nutmeg, dried orange sections and calendula petals for some visual interest.

The result is a warm and pleasant seasonal treat!

Shake pouch to redistribute ingredients. Use 1 tsp to 12 oz. hot water (195°F). Steep 6-10 minutes. Allow tea to cool 10 minutes for best flavor.

organic ingredients: honeybush, rooibos, roasted & salted sunflower seeds, oranges, nutmeg, calendula petals and natural flavors.

This both tastes and smells tremendously nutty, I can tell you all that. It’s a tad chestnutty but barely. Rather, what makes this nutty are amaretto and nutshell notes. Not that I’ve gone around eating nutshells, but you know when you crack fresh nuts from their shells and sometimes there are some parts of the husk and/or inner shell stuck on.

Amongst these notes, I’m also picking up on the sunflower seeds, but I’m not getting nutmeg from this. Orange? None of that either. This smells more sweet, honey-like, and buttery than it tastes. There is a sweetness, probably from the honeybush, but I’ve enjoyed other honeybush bases more in the past.

The name just makes me want to eat it raw :)

And it’s funny you say that because it really does have a raw nut kind of vibe going on!

The mystery teas arrived in the mail today! Trying this one first because I just pulled some cranberry almond muffins out of the oven and this sounds like it will match.

Amaretto flavor is spot on, so that’s nice. Picking up on that light spice blend that I’ve noticed in some of 52teas other rooibos teas. I don’t know about chestnut — I’ve only eaten chestnuts once and the flavor was so different from the aroma that I’m not even sure how a chestnut flavor would present itself in tea. It’s hard for me to get excited about anything rooibos, but I do like the amaretto here, and it goes great with the muffins :)

My order from 52 Teas arrived today!!!

It was hard to decide which to try first. I settled on this one. Once upon a time OI had a bagged honeybush tisane. OMgosh. It was horrible! I decided long ago that I would never drink honeybush again. However, I discovered flavored honeybush from 52 Teas, and now I’m always on the look out for something new and yummy. This one looked intriguing. I love amaretto in my coffee, so I thought I’d give it a try.

I let it brew for the full 10 minutes on accident. I planned to let it steep for 6 or 7 minutes. The color was rich and dark as most honeybush and rooibos teas are. I don’t believe I’ve ever smelled chestnuts, but I think I could smell them here. There was a faint tang of orange also. Orange is so hard to get right in tea, but it was perfect here. Not too strong. Not artificial. I couldn’t taste any almond or amaretto flavor. But the little pouch was completely full so shaking it probably didn’t mix the tea around much. I will be happy to try it again. Although this is not my favorite honeybush tea, (I think that might be the white chocolate grasshopper) it is quite tasty. I’m looking forward to my next cup.
