Chelsea's Chocolate Banana Rooibos

Herbal Rooibos Blend by 52teas

You’re probably wondering just who the heck Chelsea is. Well, if you’ve ever ordered tea from us and gotten the wrong tea or your tea has been late, it was Chelsea’s fault. Chelsea is my little bubble-headed assistant with attitude. She knows I would only say that out of a deep and abiding loathe… I mean, love.

Honestly, Chelsea is my right-hand girl and I couldn’t operate 52teas or Zoomdweebie’s without her. When she complained (did I mention she is quite whiney?) that we had created Frank’s Apple Cider Rooibos in my honor and Sheri’s Blend for my wife, but no tea bearing her namesake, I said, “Yeah, so?”

After a few more months of whining, I decided that maybe I should spare my ears and let her have her own blend, and this is what she said she wanted: A chocolate covered banana rooibos.

Well, it’s just like Chelsea, a bit sweet and fruity all at once.

So here it is, our Chelsea’s Chocolate Banana Rooibos with caffeine-free African Rooibos, milk chocolate chips, organic cacao nibs and freeze dried bananas. If you guys don’t buy it up and make me reblend it and make it a permanent fixture, I’ll probably have to listen to Chelsea whine about it, so please buy it up.

There are very few teas (that I haven’t flavored/blended myself) that have earned a spot on my “permanent” tea shelf. This tea – which isn’t a tea at all – has earned that coveted spot. I love this tea… and I’ve been hoarding it until I knew for sure that I’d be able to get more. Fortunately, more is forthcoming!

Yummy. Chocolate. Yummy. Banana. Yummy!!!

And I’m not that big on bananas, nor am I big on rooibos. But this blend – as Randy Jackson might say – worked it out! Dawg!

Awesome. Absolutely my favorite blend from 52 Teas.

As my last steeped cuppa for the evening, I chose one of my favorites! I ordered a sufficient supply of these recently so I don’t feel the need to hoard them anymore – plus Lori was kind enough to send me some as well – THANKS Lori!

Delicious chocolate and banana – not much more to say than that! This rooibos blend reminds me of Disneyland, when I lived in California, I used to visit Disneyland pretty regularly, and each time I’d visit, I’d indulge in a frozen chocolate covered banana on Main Street!

YUMMY!

Yummy yummy yum!!!

I so love this tea.

Know what? I like having enough of this on hand so that I can drink it whenever I want without worrying that I’ll run out and not have it on a day that I really crave it. Thank you for reblending it Frank. :)

Yum. Yum. Yum.

As I said in my Butter Pecan Post, I am not normally a big fan of bananas. I do like bananas with ice cream (cold stone), I like chocolate covered frozen bananas (but they aren’t really a favorite treat, they are more like a treat that I have when I’m someplace like Disneyland more because its a “tradition” than because it’s my favorite), I like bananas in smoothies and now, I like banana flavored tea… (I have a banana green tea that I haven’t yet tried from Tea Farm, going to have to actually crack that one open and try it soon). But, as for peeling a banana and eating it… well, I’d rather eat just about any other fruit. I like bananas ok… but they aren’t my favorite fruit, not by a long shot.

And, I’m not particularly crazy about rooibos. I don’t DISLIKE rooibos, but, I prefer honeybush (or even green rooibos) to red rooibos. And sometimes I do dislike rooibos if they happen to have been blended in such a way so that the saccharine-y taste comes out. Because that is just icky. I don’t have to drink saccharine sweetened drinks anymore because I don’t live with my stepmother anymore… (cue the little munchkins to sing that song when the house landed on the witch)

I actually probably wouldn’t have tried this tea if it weren’t for Frank’s explanation of how it came to exist in the first place. I felt sorry for Chelsea. So I ordered this tea.

And I LOVED IT. It is my favorite from 52Teas…. well, that I’ve tried thus far.

Chocolate. Bananas. YUM. YUM. YUM.

Enjoying a cup of my favorite Rooibos! I love this blend!

You can read my full-length review of it here:

YUM!

I enjoyed a cup of this with the birthday cookies I made for the birthday party (my daughter requested cookies – her favorite peanut butter blossoms – instead of a cake for her party)… and it is so good with dessert! Then again, it’s good instead of dessert.

Still my favorite… although I think that the chocolate malt honeybush may give it a run for it’s money.

Backlog: I had some of this yummy tisane earlier this evening while watching TV. I still love this so much. YUM!

This was sent to me unexpectedly by Jillian. Thanks!

The dry tea smells deliciously chocolatey; I’m not getting much banana. A chocolate rooibos sounds just fantastic though, so that’s hardly a problem!

The tea is quite strong, because I used 2 tsp since I figured this was an old blend. Initially, I do taste a wave of chocolatey-banana flavour. Kind of a banana chip sort of taste, to me. This fades into a light sort of cocoa-y flavour, and then the rooibos takes over, which I don’t like. I think this would be much better with a honeybush base, but oh well. I don’t think it will be all that difficult for me to finish, although I have acquired a huge number of rooibos/honeybush blends lately, which is somewhat unexpected (but not really). Oh well!

Thanks for the sample, Jillian :)

OK, Chelsea has just become my new BFF. Opened the package, and the smell of chocolate and banana jumped out at me. It’s always tough when the first whiff of something is so fantastic, it sets the bar high and often the taste just doesn’t match up. I needn’t have worried about this one, I almost burned myself trying to gulp this down, instead of savouring every sip… The mellowness of the rooibos is perfect with this!

This is going to be saved as a special treat, and I may very well hide it from the rest of the family.

Wow, this one tastes just like the Neapolitan Honeybush to me! Uncanny. This doesn’t wind up being a bad thing, as I liked the Neapolitan.

I have been using this one lately to experiment with tea lattes, but I wouldn’t call the experiment successful yet because it’s still not as good as one I’d get at a shop. So, tell me what I am doing wrong:

-Steep 1 cup (8oz) of water with tea. Add agave nectar to taste while doing this, plus 1 tsp vanilla extract (or almond, or whatever)
-Heat 1/2 cup (4oz) of soy milk (or whatever milk you prefer) – I do 1 min 20 seconds in the microwave.
-Use frothing wand to make plenty of foam.
-Pour steamed milk over tea, scoop on rest of the foam.
-Sprinkle cinnamon.

It LOOKS great but tastes too thin, so I guess I need to either steep a lot more tea or use less water. I tried steeping it extra long this time to no avail.

I’ve been drinking this tea for awhile but for one reason or another just never had the time to write a tasting note for it. It isn’t bad for a red rooibos tea, the banana for one isn’t a flavour you often find in teas and it’s subtle but nice here. The chocolate could stand to be a bit stronger – I’ve noticed that the chocolate chips in this blend don’t dissolve easily, which is usually a indicator of cheap, low-quality chocolate (I used to work at Purdy’s Chocolates). Tsk, tsk, Frank. ;)

Some skim milk in this tea seems to bring out the flavout a bit more, particularly the banana. Still I’m rather ambivalent about this tea so I think I’ll probably end up either putting it up for adoption or sending it away as a freebee in one of my swaps.

Yum! I have gone through my first pouch and just ordered another…Now I’m thinking I should have gotten 2 or 3. I used 4 tsp. in 12 oz. boiling water and let it steep for 8 minutes and added some agave and milk. I taste mostly banana but if I drink it like wine and put my nose in it and sip and smell at the same time I get more chocolate flavor. ( I try to only do this when my kids are not around to avoid ridicule).

The second time I made this I added about 2 tsp of the Zingiber Ginger Coconut from Teavana and wow, so yummy!

I got my second pouch of this last night and immediately brewed a cup….mmmm. I upped my rating of it now that I’ve played around with it and found how I like it. So far my favorite way to drink this is blended with Teavana’s Coconut Ginger Zingibar. I used 3 heaping tsp. of Chelsea’s and 2 of the Coconut to 12 oz. water and added some milk and agave and yummers!!! This is my favorite bedtime/dessert tea blend yet :)

brewed for 8 min. Smells like banana with a hint of chocolate. The taste is not as strong as the scent. The rooibos does not completely overpower the choc/banana, but it is definitely there – I know I’m drinking rooibos. Overall I like these flavors, so I prefer it to plain rooibos.

It’s a good solid quality enjoyable offering from 52teas, but it didn’t make me go “wow!” For my tastes, their pina colada honeybush is much better, and the malted chocomate is more impressive.

This tastes best piping hot!

2 tsp in 12-16oz water; added a splash of silk vanilla almond milk. Very nice.

I can’t believe I don’t own any plain rooibos. This is as good as it gets. Not a complaint against the awesomeness that is “CCBRb,” I just need to buy some Stash Red & White fusion for those times when I just really want a soothing cup of warm red tea.

meant to grab the Pina Colada Honeybush since I hadn’t had it in a while, but accidentally picked up this bag and scooped some into my IngenuiTea without realizing it until I saw the cocoa nibs. Oh well – I wanted a decaf dessert tea, so this will do just fine! :-)

Since some people (myself included) seem to taste hints of banana in the Malted Chocomate, and since Chelsea’s Chocolate Banana Rooibos is great, but could use a bit more chocolate, I decided to combine the two into a malted choco-banana rooibos mate concoction. Since they have the same steeping parameters, I just used 1 tsp of each with 16 oz boiling water. Meant to stop steeping at 4min but got distracted, so it was somewhere between 5-6 (not 5:30 exact). Anyway, I added a splash of almond milk to cool my big mug down. It’s chocolatey and banana-y and sweet (no sugar added). It looks and feels almost as rich as a mug of hot chocolate, but without the heaviness. Perfect for a rainy evening!

I got a well-blended spoonful this time so I can taste the chocolate! It’s not overwhelming, but balances out the stronger banana flavor. No sweetener needed, but a spoonful of half&half made it rich and creamy.

finished off this dreary, rainy, foggy morning. Added a teaspoonful of vanilla coconut creamer, and served with greek butter cookies.

good with a splash of almond milk – the nutiness complements the banana. Again, the chocolate is just a hint, but that’s ok with me.

having a cup w/ a piece of carrot cake. Yum!

Had a straightforward sweet banana flavor. Although the chocolate taste was not strong, it gave a richness to the rooibos teas.

This really is like a low cal dessert in a cup w/a sinful banana flavor and no need to add sugar…It was perfect for my mid-afternoon treat…Come to think of it , this would be great w/chocolate milk….

Great tea, but I think I overbrewed it on this first try.

It definitely delivers in the chocolate and banana categories in smell, but didn’t fully come through in the taste department. I also tried adding sugar and milk, but those drowned out the subtle chocolate and banana notes.

I’ll try again with a shorter brew time (packet suggests 4-10 minutes; I went for around 8:30).

OK, after changing up the brewing time, this tea is one of my new favorites. I had a nice equally delicious mix of chocolate and banana. I sweetened it and added just a splash of milk, and I tell you, it blew my mind. Uber good.

What a delicious afternoon pickup! Solid flavor with the chocolate and banana and rooibos. I added milk and sugar and lapped this right up. Mmm.

This is my first tea of the week from @52teas. First of all it smells amazing both in the pouch and whilst brewing. It has a lot of banana taste but not so much chocolate coming though.

Still a very tasty ‘hot desert in a cup’ style of tea.
