From A Quarter to Tea

Tea of the Month October 2016

Smoky and spicy with just a touch of lapsang, but ultimately sweet and pumpkin-y with plenty of custard notes. Definitely brings flavor to the tea party.

If you liked Smoky Sweet Potato Pie last year, you’ll definitely like this as well.

This tea is limited run, so once it is gone, it’s gone for the season. It is sold only in 0.5oz quantities.

Think sweet potato fries with chipotle mayo, except sweet instead of savoury and pumpkin as a sub for sweet potatoes. That’s sort of what this tastes like.

It’s a pretty fun concept of smokey spice, cream, and pumpkin with seasonings. The pumpkin flavouring sometimes veers into fall candle territory but I find it’s not a factor if I allow it to cool (the other flavours stick out more).

Props for being a honeybush that I don’t hate.

Bizarre but intriguing.

Another sample from VariaTEA. I don’t really get smokey from this one. Mildly spicey…i guess (but i’m a spice wimp and this is REALLY mild) but mostly that sort of generic pumpkin flavour. To me this isn’t anything special – i prefer my pumpkin ginger tea.

Sipdown (254)

This was quite an old tea. I hoped the chipotle would hold up to the honey and tame the sweetness. While this is not as sweet as other teas I have had lately with honey, it is still mostly honey…and some spice. I am wondering if that is the age of the tea. Or weirdness with my tastebuds because I am sick or both. Probably both. Oh well. This is a goodbye to an old, old blend which is usually a good thing.

Old enough that I’m not familiar with it! I was thinking – ooh, a chipotle tea I haven’t tried! Haha.

I went off my buying hiatus and placed an order with AQ2T after reading a bunch of good reviews here. My packaged arrived battered and with some sort of tire marks on it (thanks USPS) but all the tea was in there. I was a little disappointed to see the samples were packed in regular thin ziplocks, which makes me worry about the flavors merging from one tea to another or the tea picking up plastic bag notes, but I guess that means I’m going to have to try them all out pretty quick. All twenty of them.

First on the list is Pumpkin Chopotle Cream since it is late and this is a honeybush. I notice a super strong cinnamon scent when dry and steeped. The first couple sips seemed really light and hollow, but as I sip a little further the cinnamon comes out. I am mostly getting cinnamon. I * think * I am getting a little pumpkin in there, but it is hard to tell. I expected some heat from the chipotle, but I think the only heat I’m getting is from the cinnamon at the end. It is rather smooth which is nice and there is a little sweetness likely from the cinnamon as well. Adding cream doesn’t seem to change this much. I may be getting a slight dryness in my mouth after each sip that wasn’t there before. I’m not much into honeybush at this point, but I wanted to give this a go anyways. It mostly seems like a cinnamon tea, but maybe it will change a little with age in my cupboard.

Tyre marks?! That’s a new one

Dustin

Yup. It looked like it may have been from a hand truck or something! Poor tea went through hell to get to me!

Nattie

Wow. Poor tea indeed!
