Jasmine #12

Oolong Tea by Adagio Teas

Oolong tea from the Fujian province of China infused with the delicate scent of the night-blooming jasmine flowers. If you enjoy jasmine tea, we urge you to try the sublime taste of its well-made varieties. The ‘Jasmine Suite no. 12’ is an exotic Dragon Phoenix Pearl tea, comprised of intricate jasmine-infused pearls. Each pearl combines two delicate leaves and an unopened bud. When added to water, the pearls majestically unfurl, releasing their delicate scent and flavor. A spellbinding treat for all senses. While not cheap, this tea is well worth the experience.

Hi! I’m alive, but I’ve not been doing a lot of tea drinking. Life has been too busy to savor a cup properly, and I really hate rushing the process. Of course, on vacation, things are less busy, and we were in Canada for about 10 days a couple of weeks ago. We stayed in Lake Louise and generally had a great time hiking, canoeing, rafting, horseback riding and many other fun things.

If you’ve been to Lake Louise, you probably know that there are a couple of hikes you can do that take you up fairly high elevation increases to tea houses waiting at the top of the trails. We did the one to Lake Agnes. The day was exceptionally hot, the elevation was not what I’m used to, and I’m generally out of shape, so it was tougher than I thought it would be and I was really happy to get to the lovely tea house where we had sandwiches and sat for a while before doing the (really easy) downhill. The first tea I tried there was a Formosa Oolong (nothing else in the description) which was nice. The second was a jasmine green that had an interesting name, but alas, I didn’t have the foresight to note what it was, which is unfortunate because it was heavenly.

All of this is a rather long way of saying that tonight when I found myself without any Diet Coke to quell my oral fixation and the choice was water or tea, I started going through tins at random and the third one I picked up was this. It sounded appealing because of my memories of Canada. The jasmine fragrance was strong in the tin, and the little pearls were a medium green-to-dark-green with a tad of yellow. My 8 year old said when he saw them, “I thought tea came from leaves, not beans.” Heh.

I steeped according to the directions on the tin in the Breville, and got a medium, buttery yellow tea which brought the jasmine scent from the tin with it in exactly the same solid strength.

The flavor is pleasant, and not surprisingly very floral. My only real complaint is on the finish and aftertaste which seems a bit flat and almost a little bitter to me. I’ve had oolongs that have knocked my socks off and ones that didn’t work at all, and this is neither. Since I have more tea than any sane person should and don’t get around to drinking it often enough to make a dent, this would not go on any refill list if I had one. Which I don’t because I still have more tea than any sane person should.

By the way, I also stepped into a David’s Tea while in Banff and it was a gorgeous little shop. I sampled a jasmine oolong there, too.

well didnt like it lol. it had that really floral scent and it is a very pretty colored tea. i tried it both unsweetened and sweetened and it almost reminds me of drinking body spray rather than perfume because it wasnt over powering. my fiancee snatched my cup right up and happily finished it :)

Ummmmm Jasmine Pearls!!! :-D These little beautys I received from Rabs (Thank you!) and they are a wonderful treat. No wait, they’re amazing! I noticed that the little pearls have some “fuzzy” white leaves wrapped in there, which I have never seen in a Jasmine Pearl before so because of that I knew right away this was going to be a great experience. I steeped my little treasures and watched them unfurl and then smelled they delicate (yet stong) aroma. My first sip was pure floral silk rolling around on my tongue, very smooth and nicely scented/flavored with jasmine! These pearls I believe have just beat Teavana’s Jasmine Pearls. I will have to test them side by side to see for sure, but I am almost positive!

So I had this last night since I had just had Teavana’s Jasmine Pearls the night before (my taste buds and memory were still fresh)! I know I really should just do a side by side comparison, but I think I am just too lazy…or perhaps I simply don’t have the patience to do so? Eh, either way it hasn’t happened yet so this is the best I can do LOL. Now, the first time when I had this it had been a while since I made a cup of Teavana’s Jasmine Pearls and I think I may just been yearning for a strong jasmine flavor to it. Well, after last night I must say that this jasmine is a bit too perfumey for me and just didn’t have the same spunk and balance as Teavana’s Jasmine Pearls… it just did not compare! So for this reason and for the noticeable perfumey taste I will have to knock my rating down; I think the first time I tried them I was just in a jasmine pearl withdrawal and any pearl would have just knocked my socks off!

I simply love Oolong and as this tea taught me, I love the smell of Jasmine. I’m sitting down, writing this review with a big hot cup of this.

The liquor is dark tangerine. The scent is pure hot humid Jasmine and Oolong, which together are wonderfully sweet. The taste itself is sweet as well, kind of like a liquid birthday cake…Or really like liquid Honeysuckle. I’ve NEVER needed sugar or honey drinking this. There are the usual copper notes of a well-treated Oolong, but ultimately, this tea is all about the Jasmine.

Jasmine pearls are my favorite type of pearls. I hadn’t had Adagio’s take on them, so I ordered a sample. As always, the sample is generous, and I’ve been resteeping all morning long. Now the leaves are fully unfurled and the tea continues to be tasty! A win!

I love jasmine tea and I’m on a quest to find the best moderately priced oolong available. From my experience, I would think that there may be better than Adagio’s. From their description, the leaves “majestically unfurl.” I’ve tried every sensible brewing time and temperature combination possible and I can only get the pearls to open about half the time. The fragrance only carries an inch or so from the cup and the tea always seems “watered down.” My experience with Adagio in general has been that their teas seem “tired” when they arrive. They’re simply not very robust and just don’t brew up as expected.

I had this last night to celebrate finishing off some grading. (And I still was able to go to sleep, so that either tells you something about how tired I am, how little caffeine this tea has, or a combination of those two.) This tea has a very strong jasmine flavor. It is a pearl tea, so it’s fun to watch in a glass mug. After it unfurls, you’ll see the tea buds. It brews up to a light yellow liquid. (Yeah, that’s what it reminds me of, too.) It’s wonderful hot and the flavor transforms some as it cools. I really enjoy this one. It’s fun to brew, fun to drink. Not something that I reach for everyday, but definitely good.

Love the little “balls” of tea, especially when they unfold. Something about that just makes it taste better… ESPECIALLY when steeped in a traditional teapot (something I definitely don’t do enough of). There’s a few different types of Oolong Jasmine, they all taste almost the same, with some subtle differences. This is a lighter Jasmine, not as much flavor of the flower, but more of a mix between Jasmine and Oolong. Still very good though.

Delicious floral flavor of the Jasmine comes through with this tea. It truly does appeal to the senses watching as the leaves unfurl from their balled state as the tea steeps and smelling the jasmine scent come out from the cup. I really enjoy this tea and look forward to purchasing more when I’m through with my sampler. I used 1.5tsps in a 12oz cup and plan to re-steep as many times as possible. Being that this tea isn’t the cheapest Jasmine I’ve had I want to get as much out of it as I can.

I spent the most money I have ever spent on a tea buying a 5 oz tin of this Jasmine ($25) but it is worth every penny. The flavors are outstanding and the leaves re-steep so well. Typically I’ll get three awesome steeps out of this and the 4th and 5th are a bit weaker but they are very sweet tasting. Given the fact that I’m getting so much out of every serving of this tea the cost breakdown isn’t too bad. Plus, the visual experience of starting the leaves in ball form and watching as they expand is really fun. I’m always amazed at how large the leaves really are and I have a hard time imagining how difficult it must be to roll this tea into the pearls.

Something that has worked for me for re-steeping this particular tea is to add anywhere between 30 seconds to 1 minute to the steep time suggested by Adagio. So start with a 5 minute steep then go up to 6, 7, 8, and so on depending on how many steeps you do with this tea. I really feel like the more I re-steep this, the sweeter the tea gets so each cup is significantly different.

I absolutely love this Jasmine. Given how expensive it is, I don’t drink it unless I know I’m going to get 2-4 steeps out of it. Tonight it is fueling a study/ homework session and making my tastebuds dance.

Such pretty little pearls! And the tin smelled great! Then post-steep I had a moment of panic when I smelled a bit of that “tootsie roll pop” sweetness. I think that I successfully reset myself and my expectations before taking my first sip.

This one falls right between Adagio’s Jasmine #9 and Golden Moon’s Jasmine Pearls as far as sweetness goes. I’m not a huge fan of that sweetness (as discovered with the Pearls). There was a hint of that candy-o-doom in the first cup, but then the second and third steeps were less sweet, more floral/tea, and for me that made it much better. I’ll be happy to finish off this sample tin, but then I’ll even more happily reorder #9 again and again. NE

I was mourning the fact that I was out of my Jasmine #9, but then realized that I have a sample tin of this still hiding in my cupboard. So I busted it out and have been enjoying it today – it works very well in my JoeMo (unlike the Rosy Earl Grey which is a fail in travel mugs – it tastes like soap). It still has a sweeter taste than I like (a la Tootsie Roll Pops), but ahhh…it’s jasmine. ::contented sigh:: NE

And a quick update: I found out the other day that I got the Assistant Library Director job! So starting in November I’ll have a single full-time job! Woohoo! I’m going to have days off again! :D

I’ll start by saying this. I really really wanted to fall in love with this tea.
After receiving the sampler set from Adagio I prepared this tea as noted (180 degrees @ 5 min steep). Is it me or does this tea overpower a little? Maybe over steeped. WILL TRY AGAIN. The jasmine smells amazing, but as this is my first oolong tea I’m still working through the overall tastes of this tea. Watching the teas unfurl was the coolest btw. ;-)

I’ve spent probably around 2 months trying to find a way of preparing this tea that wasn’t as bitter/floral… FINALLY GOT IT!

Steeped at 4 minutes at 185 degress I decided to try it iced with a touch of lemon. Maybe lame, but tasted great! Didn’t use as much tea as normally one would use for iced tea (only 2 TSP) but this drink was awesome.

Taken with no additives.
Rich, well-balenced light oolong with well developed jasmine flavor.
Not over powering jasmine and as the tea cools the jasmine does not take on any unpleasantness.
Very nice.

The jasmine scent does not overwhelm the delicate oolong. It reminds me of warm humid nights with the scent of my night blooming jasmine wafting in the window.

I am a bit confused as my package of this tea says it is green tea, and the website says it is green tea. But it is listed here as oolong. The jasmine is pretty strong but I’m pretty sure it’s a green tea.

I love jasmine tea. It has such a pleasing aroma, and I find myself sleepy every time I drink it. As for how I like this one. As always, I enjoy it more as it’s cooling. I followed their recommendation of 195 degree water for 2 minutes. The jasmine is pretty strong, and I like it that way, but this actually comes close to being too strong for me. I didn’t think that was possible! Perhaps it wouldn’t if I steeped it for a shorter time. I don’t really taste the green tea at all.
For the second steep I steeped it for only a minute and half, and I like this much better. The jasmine isn’t so overpowering. There is still an underlying aftertaste that isn’t quite to my liking; I can’t pinpoint it but it ’s there. I am actually surprised by how much flavor is retained in the second steep though. That part is very nice!
The third steep is also quite pleasant, the jasmine getting more muted but still at the forefront.

This tea is pretty pricy, ($5 for a sample!) so I don’t think I will buy it regularly. The pearls are fun to watch unfurl as it steeps, but I think that’s the only advantage of a jasmine pearl over a regular jasmine tea. That’s what I think so far anyway. =) Overall I enjoyed it but it doesn’t quite knock my socks off.

So, what I really wanted was to finish off my sample of Yunnan Jasmine White from Verdant. But then my hoarding mode kicked in..SAVE IT!!! For when you really need it! So, I am trying the Jasmine Phoenix Pearls from Adagio again instead. Because its one of those nights when I just need some jasmine tea.
Last time I followed Adagios directions and I found it incredibly pungent, so this time I followed the standard green tea rules. One minute steep, 175 degrees. And it is MUCH better. I think jasmine should be fragrant and flavorful, but also delicate. This hit the spot tonight. Not as good as the yunnan white, but still a wonderful sleepy time tea. Upping the rating a bit. When treated gently, you can get multiple good infusions out of these pearls. JUST DON’T FOLLOW ADAGIOS DIRECTIONS. :)

Edit: Holy cow this tea is sensitive to temperature and steep time. Second steep I went for close to two minutes and it was a bit bitter. Keep the subsequent steeps short as well as the first one!

I like this tea. It has a nice jasmine taste and a particularly nice jasmine scent. I recommend finding the steeping time that works best for you, however, as I don’t think the recommended five minutes is necessarily your best bet…it can get a little strong and can easily start to border on bitterness. Tack on an extra minute for each resteeping and enjoy!

Soooo yummy… this is my special treat for a nice occasion or just to lift my spirits. Very sweet and floral jasmine scent, love watching the balls unfurl in the water, every sense is delighted while making and drinking this. I only have a tiny sample tin in my tea drawer and I’m trying to make it last as long as I can as I can’t really afford this nowadays.

This is a great jasmine tea. I might be biased because really like jasmine teas. The thing that stood out about this tea is that the jasmine taste really stayed after the second and third infusions. I’ve had some jasmine teas that really taste bad the second time around, but this wasn’t one of them.

The flavor was a good touch, and the jasmine didn’t overpower the oolong. I highly recommend this tea

A nicely balanced Jasmine Oolong. The aroma while steeping is a little overwhelming, but the floral notes and oolong come together well when drinking.

Just an additional note: Be careful not to oversteep this tea. The Jasmine can become overpowering and ruin the tea if you do.

This tea is really floral, perhaps a bit too much for my liking, because the aftertaste is pretty strong. Next time I make it I’m only going to steep it for 4 minutes. It smells wonderful both before and after steeping, and it is definitely going to be one of my favorites.
EDIT: I just finished my cup. As the tea began to cool down, the jasmine flavor wasn’t so overpowering anymore. By the time I finished the cup, I liked it better.

It’s been a while since I’ve treated myself to this. I had forgotten how much I like it. I think they key for this one is to steep it for only 4 minutes, as opposed to the 5 minutes that Adagio recommends.
This is a very calming tea, delighting all the senses. I bet it would taste good sweetened and iced.

I had this one for the first time in a long time. I still like it even though my palate’s changed a lot.

a favorite with or without sweetner. Not so good, for me, with honey.

Quiet time tea, not overpowering.
