Chocolate Chai

Black Chai Blend by Adagio Teas

While the greatest chocolates may come from Switzerland, the best chocolate tea undoubtedly comes from Adagio. And we guarantee that you won’t choose to remain neutral. This decadent treat infuses the flavor of rich chocolate with the bright, full taste of Ceylon black tea. A rich sugar-free treat, delectable both hot and cold.

Back logging from this morning, I made this after a strong cup of coffee, as I am a caffeine junkie, and drank it on my way to class. Instead of paying attention in Orgo, a bad move per usual, I contemplated my tea.

Overall, it was better than most teas I’ve been able to get my grungy little paws on, but not that life altering tea experience I’ve been looking for. While nicely rounded and full bodied as it were, I did forget while actually paying attention to class that it was suppose to be chocolate, not just faint notes when well examined. I added a little skim, and carefully monitored my steeping time, via an awesome tea-timer widget for my mac. Next time I’ll try it with a heavier milk and maybe steep it a bit longer? I ALWAY over steep tea, so now having good tea, I’ve been keeping a better eye on it.

Also, I’m trying the whole re-steeping business and it is not working out to hot. I know you re-steep green primarily, but I’m trying to all I can out of my precious few ounces. Needless to say, my vaguely chai spice water is very unsatisfying but I am to lazy to get more water for kettle and will deal for now. But I do have the whole chai and green sampler for Adagio to test out, but for now filling in the blanks for chem comes first.

So I did something awesome today. It was brewing this with eggnog. Massive success! Any and all eggnog fans much try.
Per usual the chocolate was a bit more subdued than I wanted, but it had a definite presence. While I over did it on the eggnog, I still got more of a tea taste than I normally do with this tea, odd. The spices in the chai works perfectly with the eggnog, although overall it came out a bit too sweet as store bought nog so often is.

I prepared this with frothed milk and sweetener. The cocoa flavor is very mild, but definitely present. Drinking a second cup without milk made the flavor less noticeable. It reminds me a bit of Mexican chocolate, except, of course, for the calories.

Another from my swap with Michelle. I still like this one, very mild chai spices, and a very soft chocolate which is more just a touch of sweetness, but its tasty. Goes well with the softer black base.

This is an ok chai. It needs more of everything actually. The flavor is quite muted to me. I like my chai a little more robust than this. Glad I had only ordered a sample and not a full order of it.

I don’t care much for chocolate, so I can’t remember why I ended up buying a sample pack of this from Adagio, but I’m glad I did. I ended up buying a full 3oz. bag after that.

The chocolate flavor is definitely subtle, perfect for me, and so are the spices. Mostly I taste cinnamon and ginger. Overall, this brews up to be a very mellow tea but pleasantly flavorful. A nice cup for any time of the day.

I add milk and turbinado sugar to my teas, and the milk really adds some creaminess that compliments the chocolate. Reminds me of a chocolate gingerbread cookie. I always reorder this when I run out. It’s not extraordinary, but it is a comforting, smooth blend.

I was really hesitant to try this tea, since chocolate is usually a difficult flavor to get right in a drink, and the leaves have a spicy, almost cinnamon like aroma to them which brought back memories of the shock that you get when you first taste bitter baking chocolate and expect it to be like the sweet chocolate that you normally eat.

HOWEVER, I was actually (and pleasantly) surprised by how this tea came out, as the chocolate mellows out into a subtle accent, with just a hint of the bitterness coming through that does well to balance the flavor of the chai itself. The aroma does tend to be on the bitter side of the chocolate spectrum, but it’s enjoyable when mixed with the aroma of the chai, and creates a really nice, spicy note that accents the flavor.

Firstly, this tea smells wonderful out of the tin. When brewed, I do not get a ton of chocolate flavor, mostly cinnamon and clove. (I think). The spice taste could be a little stronger, but it is a very drinkable tea.

I really enjoyed this. I tried it in a local tea room before buying, and found that I liked the chocolate note being very subtle as opposed to IN YOUR FACE sweet. The spices seem gentler than other chai blends I have in my cupboard. It is light, spicy, and sweet. Very enjoyable.

The flavour is decent, but too mild. Tastes more like chocolate than chai. I’ve been blending with my vanilla chais, and that worked rather well.

We selected this as our free sample with a recent order from Adagio.
As I added it to my Steepster “cupboard” I noted there is also an Adagio raspberry chocolate chai. I missed that one or probably have picked it (sounds delish!)

But I was pleasantly surprised by a Sat. delivery of my Adagio order. What better treat on a crisp fall day? We decided to try this one first, having not tasted it before.

That said, I’m happy I chose the the chocolate chai. It’s very yummy. It’s low key on the spice as a chai goes; I thought it worked well as the flavor profile was nice with the chocolate. It provides a nice gentle flavor with a heavenly aroma.

I’m down to just a couple more servings left of loose Chai in the house. This is it. I’m all out of Masala Chai. My feet were painfully cold just now, so I turned the AC up a few degrees so it would stop freezing me out, and brewed up some of this in my neglected IngenuiTea.

It smells nicely of chocolate, and has just a hint of it in the taste.

I made it with sugar and milk (I’m out of half & half), and whipped it with my frother to latte it up. So nice and warming on this rainy afternoon.

Couldn’t wait to try this one…chocolate, chai…does it get any better? Well, maybe. The aroma of this unbrewed chai is delicious and smells like Mexican hot chocolate. If you’re not a fan of cinnamon and chocolate, you might not like the aroma. Once brewed, the liquor turns a beautiful, warm dark amber brown and the chocolate aroma is still present. But, that’s the end of the chocolate. The cinnamon and cloves overpower the chocolate in this chai blend although it stills makes for a decent cup of tea if you’re looking for something with a bite or punch cuz it’s a spicy one! Don’t know if I’d want to buy this one again, though.

The chocolate is pretty much an undertone, sadly, but this still makes a pretty yummy cup for an afternoon snack. I added a touch of half and half and a generous tsp of sugar, and it sort of reminded me of subtle, spicy hot chocolate.

Good, but not great. I like this tea. It goes great with some milk and sugar. It tastes like a spiced chocolate latte.

It’s not something I’d drink every day, but it is one of those I’d want to have around for when I need something to cozy up with.

Mayan Chocolate is what I thought of when tasting this.

Chocolate and cinnamon, neither overpowering the other.

Quite enjoyable.

With a bite and some sweetness, this is a great tea to get you through an afternoon. It isn’t so sweet that it is a dessert and has a nice bite (from the chai) to give you that extra boost through whatever you are doing (not through caffeine though).

Just finished a 3 oz. bag. Not bad for a chai, but I prefer others. May buy it again at some point, but not any time soon. I did like that this one was light on the spice. (I think it is clove that does not agree with my palate.)

Not a fan of this one. Smell is great, but taste is so-so. A bit of cinnamon spice comes through, esp. with milk.

Part of the chai sampler I ordered. It was good, though I preferred the chai teas with more spice flavor to this one. However, my chocoholic husband really enjoyed the slight chocolate flavor.

Wonderful smell to the tea itself, even before steeping. Although, it definitely has a strong cinnamon hit. I prepared this with honey and a little bit of milk, which I think helped bring some of the chocolate flavors to the surface, but the cinnamon was still quite strong. I enjoyed this, but the chocolate could have been a bit more prominent.
