Almond Oolong

Oolong Tea by Adagio Teas

Combining savory almond slices with the bright, fruity taste of Formosa oolong tea, our Almond tea is a great stand-alone drink as well as the perfect dessert complement. In fact, it is so versatile that, if you don’t like our Almond tea, you’re probably the one that’s nuts.

Sandy thank you SO much for not only a generous sample but the cutest tin hand painted!!! Your such the artist – I can’t draw a stick figure so am always so happy to get something hand crafted from a friend! Thank you for the note cards as well your the best!
So onto the tea … I actually like it and I say that as I have become disenchanted with Adagio lately so this was a nice surprise!
Excellent ALMOND flavoring not cherry and I too sometimes can’t tell the difference lol but this one is almond all the way. :)
Pretty good oolong base as well.
Have had one of those days where I can’t really fully ENJOY a cup of tea so I have let this get cold (room temp) and still enjoyed it very much, then have re-heated it which does not work well with all teas but with this one it does, and very very yummy hot and freshly brewed!
For a chaotic day this has been keeping me sane!
Thank you again Sandy this was totally unexpected!
I will get ya back :)

There’s a great story about this tea. My boss is absolutely in love with it, and since her bushel of this came in recently, she gave Missy and I a sample (in a cute little hand painted tin as well). Thanks Sandy!

After she had ordered it the first time, she brought it over to my desk and we were chatting about it. My olfactory sense is not what one would consider superhuman. Considering it subhuman would be graceful, and probably more than it deserves. One of the places that this becomes really, really apparent is with cherry or almond flavoring. As far as I can tell, they are the exact same. So a lot of things that are supposed to be almond taste really fruity and weird to me.

While we were discussing this, another coworker (who we shall call Bob for as to protect his anonymity) walks by. Never one to allow a guinea pig to walk by untested, I stop Bob, and ask him if he has ever had an issue differentiating these two should-be-less-similar-than-they-are scents.

Bob’s answer? Of course not! So we hand him the tea, and he confidently responds that it smells like cherries… and I burst into laughter. Totally made my day.

Anyway, this is a nice, dark oolong with a light fruity/nutty flavor from the almond/cherry flavoring. It really has a good compliment of flavors, without either being overpowering. A nice, flavorful tea.

This is a sample from Sandy. She painted the coolest little tin up too to convey it. Thank you!

I’m one of those people who have a hard time with almond smelling like cherry. Almond flavoring always reminds me of cherries. This tastes like almonds and a dark oolong. The roasted quality compliments the almond flavor well. It’s very smooth and ends with a light mineral note. Very nice cup of tea.

I drank this during the afternoon, & it’s actually rather pleasant.
Dry, it smells like almond extract. Steeped it is much milder.
With stevia, it’s an almond sugar cookie. Not as almondy as others I have tried, but the floral flavor of the oolong also comes through, & it was a nice treat.

Leif & I also shared a pot of this Almond Oolong, which we sweetened with stevia. It’s rather like an almond cookie, although the flavor is a little too ‘almond extract’, but still tasty. It also really tasted almost like it had cinnamon in it, which is probably just my imagination. The formosan oolong base on both this & the Vanilla oolong is nice. Nothing fancy, but pleasant tasting.
Leif & I both preferred the vanilla oolong, however we agreed that this week we should do a sipdown on both, combining them into one teapot to share.

Will Work For Tea

Last month my husband went to Chicago on business. Being the opportunist I am, I looked at the hotel where he was staying – it was 4 blocks away from an Adagio store. So I sent him packing with a list of teas to get while he was there. :)

I had originally requested a sample of their Almond black tea, but they didn’t have any in store. The girl helping my husband with the order gave him a sample of this, saying that it tastes better than the one I initially wanted.

I’m finding that I need to use a lot of leaf to get the desired result. The first time I tried this I used 2 tsp. of leaf for 8 ounces. It was alright, but very light tasting. I really prefer my teas stronger. For the next cup, the amount of leaf was doubled. Better, but still lacking.

I really don’t have much experience with oolongs, so maybe it should be a lighter tasting almond flavor. While it makes an okay cup, it’s probably not going to be something I reach for in the mornings…

I had most of this note written and then my browser crashed, boo. Anyway, this tea comes courtesy of Jillian, thanks! I’ve been interested in flavored oolongs since although I haven’t had a lot of them, I’ve enjoyed the ones I’ve tried so far. And this one is almond, so I’m definitely excited to try it because I love almond-flavored anything.

The scent of the dry tea isn’t very strong, but I definitely catch an almond aroma; nutty, not quite sweet marzipan-type almond. The brewed tea smells really nice. Almondy, yes (though again in more of an actual-nut kind of way), but also distinctly appley. It reminds me of apple-almond pastries.

The flavor is light, but tasty. I wish I had brewed it for a little longer, I think. The main flavor of the sip is really the oolong: a little bit fruity/floral, a little bit roasted (just a tad!) from the darker oolong. The taste isn’t as appley as the aroma, but I do get hints of it, which must just be coming from the oolong. The almond blooms at the tail of the sip and lingers primarily in the aftertaste, and its slightly more sweet-almond marzipan than in the aroma. All in all, a tasty tea and I look forward to trying it a couple more times with different steeping parameters.

Turns out this is a decently tasty cold steep. I threw the rest of my sample into a cup last night (whoo stash busting), and for lunch I was rewarded with a pretty tasty almondy and slightly formosa-oolongy iced tea. It wasn’t super almondy, but the flavor was there, along with a general nuttiness. I’ve struck out a couple of times recently with cold brews not turning out quite right, but this one was definitely drinkable.

Time for Oolong!

Formosa Oolong is where I got my “start” with Oolong, and so it will always hold a dear place in my heart, even though I’ve since discovered green Oolongs and I quite enjoy them. There is still something so delightful about a beautiful Formosa.

The natural peach-like flavor of the Oolong tea is a nice match to the sweet, nutty notes of the almond essence. It is a really tasty tea without additions, but, I think just a small dollop of honey accents it just enough to encourage some of the sweeter almond flavors to develop in the cup.

While this is certainly not the best Oolong I’ve ever tasted, it is good, and I’m really glad I had the opportunity to taste it.

I am still dealing with my nasal infection, and it feels like my tongue has been wrapped in cotton… it feels buffered, and my taste buds are having a hard time (for the most part) discerning flavor. I think that this might just be worse than the other symptoms of the infection – because I MISS being able to drink tea. Yes, I can still drink tea, but, part of me feels like “what’s the point?” because I can’t really enjoy it.

So, I have still been drinking teas, but, I am drinking ones that I’ve already tasted before… so that I don’t miss out on some interesting flavor that my taste buds wouldn’t pick up on right now.

With my nasal infection this doesn’t really taste much like an Oolong. But, it is still alright… at least I know it does taste better than I’m tasting right now…

Good tea: very fragrant leaves, aromatic brew, great tasting tea. The oolong is rich in flavor with a hint of almond as the final note. Drank hot with no additives. This is my first Adagio flavored oolong, but I must admit, I am intrigued and interested in getting more.

I enjoyed this. You could really taste the almonds in it which was really nice. It reminded me of sweetened almond milk, which I suppose would be a good thing since it is supposed to taste like almonds. Only thing I didn’t like is there was a bit of perfumey taste to it.

I had to put a lot of freakin’ leaves into the teapot to get any almond out of this tea, and even then it was rather disappointing. It was faintly like almond milk.

The two flavors – almond milk and Formosa oolong – didn’t really match each other. I mean, they didn’t taste bad exactly, but this was not a truly blended tea, just a half-hearted attempt at it.

This tea isn’t terrible. It’s not bad. It’s just.. stunningly mediocre, like many of Adagio’s flavored teas. There’s so much flavor bursting from them that it seems fake. I like flavor to come directly from the tea leaf, not additives or flavorings. This smells good, but it’s so overpowering, just like their Vanilla Oolong that I recently swapped away. And the tea’s the same way. I love almonds, but it’s overwhelming, screamingly almonds. I can’t taste any oolong.

Ugh. I don’t think I’ll be trying any new Adagio samples for awhile.

This is another tea I picked up courtesy of the Travelling Teabox – I like the idea of flavoured oolongs and I’d had my eye on this particular one for awhile.

I love almond-flavoured foods and drinks and this tea doesn’t disappoint. The scent is reasonably subtle but the tea itself is quite flavourful. I’d liken the almond taste more to almond extract rather than just the plain nuts, and I think it mixed well with the roasted, slightly earthy flavours of the dark oolong base.

The leaves have a fantastic aroma that reminds me of amaretto. It’s a nutty, almost liquor-like smell that is very inviting. The tea itself still has a smooth almond accent to it that isn’t sugary or over sweet, though the aroma and the flavor does mellow out from the aroma of the leaves.

In terms of taste, this tea has a sweet almond flavor that’s smooth on the palette with no bitterness. It’s pleasant, though the almond flavor could be a little stronger.

Not a big complaint though; as this one’s a keeper.

Thanks to Will Work For Tea for sending me a sample of this. I have to say, it has a strong nutty flavor to it, almost a bit overpowering at times. I am a fan of almonds in general, though am still a bit undecided about how I feel about almond teas. I will say that there is a wonderfully pleasant lingering taste of honey that sticks around long after the last sip of tea that I really enjoy. I have enough to make another cup or so and am going to try to put this one over a bit of ice or add a bit of cream to see how I can better enhance that honey like flavor. Over all a good tea and I am glad to try it. I don’t think I would buy any sort of large amount of it though.

I soooo love this flavored oolong – it smells like amaretto and if you add a little rock sugar it tastes like Jordan Almonds. Very smooth.

Thank you to The Quiet Life for sending me this tea!

I can taste the almond but I am still not entirely sure how to put how I feel about this tea in words. So I will have more and come back with a better log.

To say that I love this is an understatement. I drank 3 cups of it today.

The nutty, amaretto aroma is just divine. This translates nicely to the steeped cup. My friends think almond smells like cherry, and yes, I do understand that. However, this certainly doesn’t taste like cherries. =)

The oolong is smooth and not bitter and this steeps into a lovely caramel-colored liquid.

My only regret is that I ordered a sample. I’ll be going back to Adagio immediately and buying a bushel.

Note: 12 seconds later….they are out of the bushel size until early June. =(

I have a sample of this tea, and am mulling over whether to order it. The oolong leaf is very dark and oxidized looking. There is a sweet almond smell, but my sample contained none of the almond chips seen in the photos of this tea. I don’t know if that means they no longer use them, or I just got none in my sample.

The smell of this tea brewing is amazing – I kept taking big long sniffs because I enjoyed it so much. The flavor is a little thin using the average amount of leaf I generally use. For my second pot, I added about a third more leaf, and it was much better. The flavor is smooth, without an over powering amount of almond. My usual complaint with Adagio’s flavored teas is that they are too intense and rather artificial tasting. This was much better than their other flavored teas. The color of the tea is very dark for an oolong.

Testing 3 almond flavored teas tonight, and this is the 2nd. The first, Adagio’s (regular) black Almond did not make me a fan (bitter). This one is much nicer for my tastebuds. The almond comes through, but is not overbearing. I added a tbs. of honey and this made this a mildly sweet almond flavored tea. Much nicer than the regular black version. Kudos to Adagio on this one.

Free sample gotten from Adagio. When I opened the packet, the smell of almond was overwhelming. This, for me, is an intensely good thing since I absolutely adore almond flavored anything.
With boiling water poured in, the smell of almond is still present, but the smokiness of the oolong also shines through.
All in all, it’s a nice tea, good strong flavor. I’ll need another tasting to really decide on this one, though. I’m new to oolong!

Ok, so this one is too smokey and too burnt tasting. I could barely finish the cup, even with some milk put in to mellow the flavors. I don’t think I’ll be trying this again, since both times I had it this tea really made me feel like my head was in a meat-smoker.
