Dancong Aria

Oolong Tea by Adagio Teas

A rare tea from Phoenix Mountain in Guangdong province, China. Perfumy, orchid and almond. Smooth and refined texture with flavors of fresh apricot, peach pit and honey. Incredibly long finish. This is a tea to take your time with – be careful not to over-steep it, because for a tea that’s got ‘flowers’ going on for days, this is no shrinking violet. A rich, grounding cup.

The first cup I had was amazing. It tasted so strong of lychee and honey with the lingering vegetal aftertaste so characteristic of many oolongs. It also had subtle floral notes I’ve had several types of Dan Congs before, so I was excited to see what the second cup would bring.

Much to my dismay, everything I tasted was largely lost the second time around, except a little sweetness with the vegetal aftertaste (which was, of course, significantly weaker). The third cup tasted like water.

I was very disappointed given how expensive Dan Cong Aria is — I’m glad I got only a sample. However, after reading the reviews on here, I’m thinking I should have added more tea. Perhaps Adagio is being conservative on this one.

Brewed a couple cups of this tea this afternoon. Wasn’t expecting much, but was delighted to find a delicious oxidized oolong. A little earthy, a little nutty, a little sweet, and perfect for a winter day up here in Montana.

Several seconds after sipping, there’s an intriguing tropical fruit aftertaste; I’m not too familiar with orchids, but there is certainly a floral aroma. I’m suddenly tempted to try drinking this out of a wine glass to concentrate the aromas! There’s a warm roasted flavor on the front of the tongue, but the overall impression is fruity, probably due to that aftertaste. I like it – but I think I like it more after drinking than while drinking. ETA: As it cooled, the roasted notes gave way to a much peachier taste – not a bad thing.

Still my favorite oolong? Yep.

Apparently boiling water into room temp tiny glass pot → 200°F starting temperature. This is a little hotter than the last time I had this tea, and the aroma is roastier than I recall. There’s still some fruit, fortunately. Likewise for the taste: a little toast, but still peachy, and a nice tropical fruit aftertaste (or maybe that’s orchid? I haven’t eaten an orchid before). Still, think I understeeped this a little – more leaf next time.

2nd steep at 195 and 4 minutes

This is a really lovely, flavorful, sweet oolong. There is a sweet, lingering aftertaste; a little like flowers, but not overpoweringly so. It invites you to stop, breathe, take a break from your day. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for other teas from Phoenix Mountain in the future.

2 grams, 3oz water

On a second steeping the color is just as vibrant if not more so, and a bit yellower than the first. I think it got sweeter too, though that might just be because my water was a little cooler. The honey/tropical fruit flavors are more pronounced.

2.25g of leaf in 6 oz boiling water for 5 min. Not to sound corny but this is quite literally peachy keen! It has a wonderful peach taste w/o being over powering or artificial. A great tea for those who like sweeter teas w/o it being labeled a fruit flavored tea.

2nd infusion w/ dinner. Left over Chinese- Lemon Chicken w/ white rice… my FAVE! My family are not Chinese food eaters so I only get it on my birthday.

Made 24oz of this today. I bought this when it was featured for the roots campaign and am just now opening it. Not sure I’m getting honey notes in this or not… there’s a lot of sweetness, but it’s hard to tell if it’s honey-eque. I do find it funny that they don’t mention peach. This is a wonderfully sweet, peachy, and floral tea. I think this time I’ve gotten more floral notes than usual and less peach… A wonderful light, but not green, pseudo flavored oolong

I’m on quite the ginger peach (which would be amazing added to strawberry by the way), but sadly I’m out of ginger teas. Not that I don’t have PLENTY other teas… But wait, I have this! It isn’t a peach flavored oolong, but I do think that it has a peachy taste so I think I’ll use this:)

2.25g Dancong Aria/1.12g ginger/6oz water.

Wow! Yep. I was right. Even though I added ginger, the peachy flavor is still there. It’s a wonderful balance of tea, peach, and ginger. I think I might even like this better than their actual peach oolong!:)

Infusion 1, 5 min, for my mom and the 2nd, 6 min, for me. The 2nd infusion seems much lighter than I remember and the peachiness is all but completely gone.

Infusion 5, very simillar to infusion 4.

Infusion 3. Lost most of the peachy taste, but still very sweet:)

infusion 6, 10 min.

infusion 4- lighter and still sweet.

Still experimenting with this one, but love the sweet fruit that comes through.

I just received a sample of this and am currently sipping my second steep. I brewed it using a sort of “gong-fu” style: tiny yixing pot, lots o’ leaf, very short (< 1 min.) steeps. I’m very impressed! Classic Dancong flavor: sweet and flowery, but with enough astringency to remind you that you’re not drinking a Bao Zhong. Really a beautiful tea, and at a reasonable price compared to other Dancongs of comparable quality. I highly recommend this to lovers of oolong. One caution: in my experience, Dancongs can be a little finicky, so if your first try at this tea isn’t great, don’t give up.

Once brewed, the color is a light orange with a hint of pink. The smell is very mellow and at the same time rich with notes of what seems like exotic fruit. Smells nice. :O

After a sip, I’m impressed. It’s definitely flavorful and tastes almost how it smells. It has a unique flavor. As it cools its flavor is more pronounced. Definitely try this out if you’re into oolongs. Easily a new favorite.

I didn’t use anything with this tea.
This is a dark fermented oolong with a lot of toastiness but a very weak mouth. Paired with it being a fussy brew and the very hot taste being slightly astringent no matter what you do makes it not high up on my list.
The astringency goes away as the tea cools but none of the other negatives are mitigated by cooling.

The tea I got had been steeping for a while, so it has a bitter taste that doesn’t compliment the flavor. Will give this one another try.

Today I’m getting hints of peach in the aroma (both of the leaves, and from the tea) as well as in the flavor. This is a very interesting tea, as it has a sweetness to it, but also a mossy/earthy flavor that balances that sweetness. The result is a complex flavor that unfolds with each sip, as well as while the tea cools. Good stuff!

This tea has a flowery sweetness upfront and a honey finish that is accented by just a touch of bitterness that lingers on your tongue. It’s not an especially aromatic tea, though the leaves do have a kind of woodsy, cinnamony smell to them that is pleasant but subtle.
