From Adagio Teas

Black tea from the Anhui province of China. Perhaps the most famous of Chinese varieties, prized for its rich, toasty flavor, mineral flinty notes and smoky, almost incense aroma. Our Keemun Concerto steeps a beautiful, fiery amber red, with a smoky aroma and earthy, smooth flavor. Clean finish and very mellow.

From a teaswap with Mastress Alita. Thanks!

Way up in northern California on a late May morning. Fumble around for the zipper in your tent, still dusted in frost at daybreak. Emerge from your cave and get a good stretch in. Wander over to the smoldering campfire. A good stoke gets it going enough to boil a pot of water. Wash up away from the group, naked and vulnerable to the curious black bear whose nighttime haunt includes the campsite. Dry off in the continually warming rays of the sun, whisps of steam snaking off your body. Chew on a few pine needles to freshen the breath. Throw on a thick warm sweater, an old pair of Carhartts and work boots. Brew several cups of this tea with the water now simmering and fill up the thermos. Grab a tart orange, an old Hershey’s bar and a hunk of crumbly wheat bread on your way out. Come back hours later in the late afternoon, exhausted, with a paper grocery bag full of king boletes. Brush the dirt off the mushrooms and cut them in half, inspecting for bugs. Slice up those fat mushroom beauties and pan fry them on the fire in a cast iron skillet until they’re slightly crispy and leathery, finishing them with a touch of salt and a good cracking of black pepper. Relax on the ground, sitting against a log and chat about the day’s bounty with fellow hunters. You can all agree it has been a successful day.

Summer Vacation! Woke up early this morning and am getting in a cuppa of black tea before work. Thanks to the generosity of Meowster I have several new Chinese blacks in my cupboard… thanks Meowster!

So this morning I have brewed up a Keemun, and other than having it in blends with other blacks, I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had it straight before. It has a nice aroma, a bit like leather, evergreen, and subtly smoky. This is quite nice. I was worried it might be a bit too much for me, but it’s actually very smooth; it’s robust, but doesn’t carry any bitterness or astringency. The maltiness of the brew is more mild, but it has nice notes of dark cocoa, leather, smoke, and a bit of earthiness that tastes of evergreen needles and mushrooms. I also get the faintest hint of black pepper right at the finish. I certainly prefer something like this at breakfast than a typical breakfast tea.

This one isn’t as robust as my all time favorite tea, Assam, but I like the buzzy mouthfeel and the hint of smoke. This is especially well paired with Assam. I use more leaf and let it steep for about 5 minutes. I usually take my tea western style- I think that the cream and honey I add brings out some of the flavors better. In Keemun, I notice more smoke and malt flavor and maybe a little hint of cocoa.

My experiment in tasting several black teas is turning out to prove I haven’t got much of a palate to tell the difference. I found this one alright. It improved with a little sugar, and I liked the way it tasted much better once it had cooled drastically, almost to room temperature.

I’m a big lapsang souchong fan and was hoping the whole “famous smoky” thing would enrapture my tastebuds, but I honestly couldn’t taste it at all. May try a longer steep/more leaf to try to bring it out.

12 oz cup, 1 1/2 tsp leaf, 1 tsp sugar.

Has kind of a roasty, vegetal flavor (sweet potato?), with a slight corn cereal-like taste in the background. I get a lot of chocolate notes on scent, which I couldn’t taste right away, but it is there in the aftertaste. No harshness.
After subsequent times drinking this I definitely prefer it with sugar, seems to accentuate all of the tasting notes I like in there. I also like a relatively short steeping time at lower temperatures.
(update 3 years later) I bought more and I’m bumping the score up.

This tea really had a bit of a medicine-y taste to it. I see some comments about astringency and smokiness, which I guess is what I was tasting. I wasn’t particularly fond of that. I’m not sure if different amounts of tea and different steeping times will affect that.

Steeped this one for about 10 minutes and then let it cool before drinking, and it came out really smooth. The smoky flavor was downplayed, and it came out with a nice, rich black tea taste.
