Okay so…this tea came out kinda perfumey when i tried it but looking back at the website, I see now that a sample pack makes about 10 cups >_>. Oops…I only made 4 cups from my sample. It IS easy to over-steep but since it was still tasty and SO INEXPENSIVE!! I won’t write off Adagio just yet.

The added orange flavoring does not do this tea any favors, it comes out like Constant Comment, just a brashly flavored orange tea. I like the presentation with the flowers, but this isn’t as subtle as Earl Grey should be, and I don’t taste or smell the supposed addition of vanilla to the mix. It’s also odd that Adagio says that bergamot is harsh, because in a good Earl Grey, the bergamot is a subtle, smooth thing, but in Adagio’s Earl Grey it is very harsh. I’m sorry I ordered ounces of it instead of just the sample.

The first 5 times I made this tea, I hated it. It wasn’t the taste, it was the disappointment. I imagine I felt the way a parent would if they saw their MIT-caliber child slough off college for a career in sanitation. The gap between the creamy, Fruity Pebble-ish quality of smell and the watery, astringent taste was woefully expansive. I began to feel betrayed by my nose, even more so by the tea. And then, yesterday happened.

Finally, after brewing this tea every which way from Sunday, I found my sweet spot. “Sweet” being the operative word. I piled two heaping teaspoons into my trusty French Press as usual, but this time I poured a boiling 8 ounces of spring water in with no delay. I gave my press a few pumps and then set the timer for 4 minutes, instead of my usual 5.

4 Minutes later, and the smell floating form the kitchen is amazing to say the least. The cloyingly sweet scent of the dry leaves had mellowed into a collage of fruity, creamy floral notes. I paused to savor the smell for as long as I could before my will power gave way to the dark-brown tonic. Let me just say, the smell of this tea is just as important, if not more, than the taste. By the way, if you are a brutish tea gulper, who forgoes subtle smells and nuances in expectation of a tea that hits like a glass of kool-aid, repent. I have.

The first flavor was of fruity cream. I noticed immediately that the taste was strengthened exponentially by the heavily-scented vapors simultaneously floating through my nasal passages. This is the smell thing I was talking about. The fruity cream quickly dissolved into floral notes that my vivid imagination compares to eating a bowl of potpourri, in the best way possible. At this point, I swooshed the tea around in my mouth for a second and picked up on a creamy-thick texture and mouthfeel, which only served to accentuate the “face full of flowers” effect. Seriously, I felt like I could burp up a rose bud. The back end of the sip was a reminder that I was drinking black tea. A sightly malty note settled in, and I was pleased to find a slightly sweet honey twist riding it’s coattails. I repeat, wait for the honey twist before you swallow this tea. I immediately realized that steeping for 4 minutes rather than 5 had removed virtually all of the bitterness that I has disliked so much before. The result? A smooth, sweet, multi-layered tea that makes no attempt to hide it’s identity as a black tea. Good for mornings, even better for cool afternoons.

All in all, I give this tea a 7/10. The lingering floral aftertaste was an added bonus. This is my first taste of any type of Earl Grey, so I have no comparitive data within the Earl Grey family, but I will be using this as my go-to when I want something a little softer than my beloved Irish Breakfast. Enjoy!

Pretty tasty, and an interesting twist on Earl Grey. The cream and vanilla flavors played together nicely. After tasting I added a bit of milk, though I think I should have let it be—my cup wasn’t really brewed strong enough to handle milk.

Next time I’ll brew this a bit longer than 3 min. I was cautious the first time, since I’ve been drinking a lot of ThinkGeek’s Tea. Earl Grey. Hot., which I believe is one of Adagio’s other Earl versions (Bravo?). For that one, I prefer to keep the brewing time pretty light.

I just got this and I didn’t like it, perhaps because my expectations were not aligned with what Adagio Teas was trying to market. I really wanted a notably sweet vanilla and cream earl grey, like Teavana’s Earl Grey Creme.

Adagio’s take on a “cream” Earl Grey was not very sweet. This blend ended up being a huge WALLOP of citrus… which is cool if you’re a huge Earl Grey enthusiast, rather than someone seeking a mild “cream”-type Earl Grey.

If I wasn’t so fond of plain Earl Grey, I would probably really like this. It isn’t as creamy as I expected and the citrus is a bit too strong. But like I said, that is probably just because I keep comparing it to plain Earl Grey. I probably won’t purchase this again but I like it alright.

Creamy and very soft. Reminds me of an orange creamsicle! This is a great tea for when I feel like indulging and adding a little milk and sugar.

Put simply this tea sucks.

At first inspection I opened up the bag and enjoyed what I was smelling. Than I drank this schtuff, it is very bitter and the bergamont is cheap and overpowering. I still have the majority of my 3 ounce order and I don’t want to throw the stuff out, but I really don’t enjoy drinking it.

A good earl grey, but nothing stands out to make it excellent. A good drink nonetheless.

Ehh, I never am sure how to feel about this tea. I was excited when I ordered it because I love the individual flavors and thought that they might go well together. I got it a while ago and still have quite a lot of it because I’m afraid to make it half the time. The first time I ever made it (months ago, now) it came out really well. The second time it tasted so horrible and bitter and… soapy that I had to throw out the entire pot. It was utterly undrinkable. I’ve always kept to the safe side and used small amounts of leaf and shorter steeping times than I normally would with black teas.

Overall, this doesn’t really taste like vanilla, cream, or Earl Grey. It’s just sort of a black tea with a little bit of an almost milky aftertaste that doesn’t stand out much. At best it’s drinkable and at worst it’s absolutely wretched. I wish I’d only gotten the sample size and not the full 4oz tin.
