Oh goodness, this is good.

Rich and slightly smoky, malty, smooth, slightly astringent, and really just good. Yeah, this is just what I needed to kick start my day.

I was going to take a moment or two to write a full-length review, but I think I shall do that on another day. For now, I’m just going to sit back and enjoy this before I need to get busy with running errands and such.

Backlog:

I finally wrote my full-length review for this tea a couple of weeks ago, here is the link to that review: http://sororiteasisters.com/2013/02/02/double-knit-blend-from-damn-fine-tea/

Another great blend from Damn Fine Teas! I really like this one. Rich, a touch of smoke, full-bodied and tastes heavy without feeling too heavy. A very enjoyable cuppa.

man another winner from Terriharplady I’m so terribly torn because after trying out these three from A&D i really want to order the tiger assam but holy crap that’s 4.4oz. That being said it appears to be free shipping today, even for the 25$ priority shipping to canada…so that would be a serious win if i do it.

This tea? Also a great one, though if i had to pick only won, the tiger assam would win first since it’s such a great smooth blend. This one has that same smoothness but there’s an added splash of bitterness in the cup that goes well with the tea but makes it just a little less delicious than the other. So glad i got the chance to try these since the 4.4oz is for sure a barrier when you’ve never had even a try. :)

sipdown!

I figured today was the day to try and get down some of my 1-2 cup samples. In that vein i wanted to kick off the day with a nice bold cup of black. I do quite enjoy this blend though the tiger assam is for sure my fav of the 4 a&d teas currently available. This one has a bit to it that, if you don’t enjoy that in a black, will make you not like this tea. Not the case for me, but for others that might not make this as enjoyable.

Tea of the morning……

This just gets better with each sip. Ahhhh.

When I saw that A & D was having a sale this month, it was time for me to take the plunge and buy some since they had a black blend available. I was quite enamored with their Damn Fine Holiday Blend a few years ago when Batrachoid was so generous in sending me a sample. Another reviewer mentioned that it was heavily Keemun….and that put me over the edge. I do love the look of their packaging, and it was just time. There has not been a new tea in this house for a while (with the limit on the amount I can drink, plus a near life-time supply of tea on the premises, purchases are few and far between.)

This blend is kind of reminiscent of Harney’s Palm Court or Eight at the Fort. I do think it is a little more Keemuny than either of those two (which is perhaps why I am loving it so….) There is definitely something to give it a decent amount of mouthfeel. And there is a brightness, too. (Perhaps Darjeeling?) Slight smoke, maltiness, a hint of cocoa, the ever so slightest hint of a bitterness that rounds it out very nicely (yes, that sounds off, but man, does it make for a great cuppa.) The tin looks and works just like a small paint can. While the packaging is incredibly fun-looking, and I am sure it will keep the tea very fresh, it can be a pain to open easily. It takes several pries to get the prize. However, I would totally buy more. I am hooked.

Usual teapot method.

This is some Damn Fine Tea!
Bold, malty, slightly sweet with a hint of smoke & a ray of sunshine!

So here’s the story:
I spent the weekend at Tony’s, bringing all of my newly arrived Damn Fine Teas with me, which I thoroughly enjoyed sampling. As I was packing my bag to make the 5 minute drive back home (yes, we each own our own homes, 5 minutes away from each other), I dropped the tin of this tea, the lid popped off, & roughly 1/4 cup spilled out onto the floor.

At my house we have what is called the ‘5 second rule’, meaning if you pick it up quickly & dust it off, no harm done. At Tony’s house, the floors are immaculate & you could probably leave it there for a week, & still pick it up clean & drink it. BUT because I’m doing a trade with Sil, I put the ‘floor tea’ in a separate container (Tony had an empty Ahmad tin). So Sil, you can rest assured that the tea I am sending you did not come off the floor.
This also means I can drink the tea from the Ahmad container with wild abandon until it’s gone.
I made a whole pot to drink while teaching this morning. It’s pretty nice! :)

(To be chanted by a group of cheerleaders, shaking pompoms…or maybe a rapper?)

“Guess who finished their taxes??
Me, myself, & I!
Guess who gets a refund
Terri, Theresa, & Me
We rocked it!
We rolled it!
We slapped that ℬÎ✞₵Ḧ & owned it!
YEAH!”

Hopefully I haven’t offended anyone with the above rhyme :D
This is what happens when I suffer from sleep deprivation.
Tony will tell you to never take a road trip with me, as I have a variety of rock album lyrics memorized & like to sing them in the car, sometimes changing the words to fit my mood. The last time we went to chicago I sang pretty much all the way home.

So my taxes are done. I drank 2 more cups of Tiger Assam, the final cup with Stevia & creamer, & it was oh, so good! I usually drink my blacks straight, but there are exceptions to all rules.

Double knit is also quite tasty with stevia & creamer, it really brings out the caramel flavors that come with the hint of smoke.
I’m going to celebrate with Second Breakfast! And more tea!

Hey Sil, remember when I first got this tea & dropped the cannister & some of it spilled out onto the floor? Remember that I scooped it up & put it into a recycled Ahmad tea cannister (because I didn’t want to put it back into the real cannister, which I was going to send you a sample from)… Well, today I finally finished the spilled tea from the Ahmad can, of course, I can’t really count it as a sipdown, since I still have plenty left in the original can. But I knew that you’d like to know! Hahaha!

I like this tea. I like the Tiger Assam better, but this is damn fine tea (sorry, I love saying that) too. Its a nice full tasting brew, with a hint of smoke. Very satisfying! I made a 16 oz in my stainless & ceramic sippy cup to drink en route to a concert I played today over in Illinois. It was perfect.

The bills are paid!
I fixed myself some lunch & a cup of this tea, which is bold & manly, & then I checked my mail & I have a package from Canada! YAY!!!
I didn’t expect it to come so soon. While I’ve been enjoying this cup of damn fine tea, I’ve been playing with all the samples Sil sent to me. I’m SO excited! Thanks for trading with me, Sil!

Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed & holding my breath until the box I sent arrives…

A nice way to bring my Keemun drinking day to a close, at least for now. Of course, this isn’t a straight Keemun, but there’s enough in this blend to lend the gentle smokiness & sweetness. I love Andrew’s & Dunhams Damn Fine Teas!

This is a good cup of tea!! I wish I were drinking it a few years back, when I really could tell a lot about teas just from sipping. It’s not clear to me all that’s blended in it, but it’s good!

There’s definitely a bit of assam. And I love that particular flavor. This cup stands up as a strong tea. I highly recommend it.

1.5 tsp for 300mL water @100C, steeped 4 minutes, drunk bare.

I got a Damn Fine package in the mail! Woot! And I ordered it just before they put the 3-pack on sale, weh. Not to worry: I wanted to snatch the Captain for one last tryst, so I got one of the remaining Hot Teas on High Seas sets … and a big ol tin of Double Knit.

The copywriting and design of A&D tins gets me every time.

Dry leaf smelled very Keemun heavy, and good Keemun, with oaky notes but no tarriness, plus some red winey notes. Big smiles.

Liquor is a medium brown. Body quite light, almost like a Darjeeling in mouthfeel. In fact, I’d swear there’s some Darjeeling or Nepal in this blend, giving a slight bite. Darjeeling and Keemun at least … mineral notes on the finish and a faint pucker — like a gentle kiss. Not a chewy black tea, but that’s what Assam is for. A really good blend, bright and thoughtful.

1.5 tsp for 300mL water @ 100C, steeped 4 minutes 30 seconds, drunk bare.

I couldn’t get to my strainer right away … the extra 30 seconds makes this tea a little bitter for me. The smoke is starting to dominate, but the smooth malt beneath is still there. Mineral finish, but defintely tending to bitterness.

1.5 tsp for 300mL water @100C, steeped four minutes, drunk bare.

I am desperate for a hit of Assam.

There is Assam in this delicious blend.

There’s also a fair bit of Keemun, I think, which can get bossy, but the Assam notes come out as the tea cools.

Damn Fine has never let me down.

1.5 tsp for 300mL water @95C, steeped four minutes, drunk bare.

I am experimenting with cooler water on black teas, but for this robust blend, I think a full 100C boil does the best job of bringing out the creamy heft of Assam. The smokier (Keemun?) tea dominated and got a little bitter. Very enjoyable, still, and it gave me a great boost this evening.

1.5 tsp for 350mL water @100C, steeped 4 minutes, drunk bare.

My very last scrapings from my second tin of this stellar blend … I’ve got three more tins on the way to me, because this dependable, invigorating black tea blend doesn’t get bitter and has lots of nuance and depth. Magic. It’s gonna be a long wait for this package, though.

1.5 tsp for 300mL water @100C. Steeped 3 minutes. Drunk bare.

I like this better on the shorter steep. The Assam (if that’s what I’m tasting) gets to show off its creamy heft without the Keemun (?) dominating with its toast and smoke.

This is a very good blend. At my first sip this evening, I just sighed in bliss.

Yum. This is a nice hearty blend. Not too astringent, no weird flavors, just smooth quality tea. This could become a favorite.

Today was stressful as all get out, and exhausting—maybe I’ll get into it later. Anyway, this came at the end of it as a very welcome surprise. And it was exactly what I needed. Smooth and bold, straightforwardly pleasing while also being as rich and satisfying as a cup of coffee (sorry teahards). I sat on the patio and looked out the window and it soothed and re-energized me beautifully. Like that “classic [to me] old school black tea taste” I mentioned jonesing for earlier, done really, really smoothly and well. It might make a helluva morning blend, we shall see.

Between that afternoon surprise cup, which felt like a coffee and cig break frankly in terms of “strong shot of chemical relief”, and the nap I took with my husband and both cats on the bed while it stormed outside this afternoon, I’m recharged and ready for tonight’s ping pong party.

Mmmmm. Good tea for my late breakfast. Tempted to take this to work.

Blargh. Not enough sleep. We had storms roll through DFW early this morning, and it woke me up.

Been drinking this tea at work all week, it’s a really good blend for that. Makes a nice morning cup.

PS – give to the Red Cross if you can please – between storm season and the fertilizer plant explosion in West last night, they are going to need the resources!

It’s been a while since I’ve touched this tea. I forgot how good this tastes. A bold, bright flavour with just a slight touch of bitterness. A great cup to start the day.
