So this is the first tea I choose to have out of order #2 from Butiki.  Yes,  2nd order within the last 3 weeks… Evil Temptress Stacy is to blame for making her teas so incredibly irresistible!

Just as I was thinking that instead of reasoning myself on order #1, I should have gone for the 75$ purchase at once in order to save on shipping, I got an email from Stacy advising me that a free shipping promo was coming for labor day week on the following Monday.  Since I was missing on that promo cause I had ordered too soon, she offered me to choose another tea free of charge, that equaled the shipping price.

Now, that’s how you keep clients around for a long, long, time!  I chose Exotic pear which does smell fantastic, but this morning, I just had a too strong attraction to Assam…

I love Assam, I  do like my tea bold and robust, after all I am a Canadian woman! ( comment directed at tunes&tea for his Canadian Breakfast review, lol).

I know this type of black tea is not loved by so many, it is often very strong and can be astringent, but that’s something I seek in the morning as a breakfast tea…

I went 1 minute over the recommended steep of 4min 30sec, and still,  the astringency is close to inexistent. What a nice mellow Assam! It makes me wonder if this is a first or second flush,  I’ve read that second flush Assams are sweeter and less bitter.

Don’t get me wrong, it might be softer than most Assam I’ve tried, but it’s still very bold with lots of character!

It is full bodied, nice big dark amber color, rich cocoa feel, malty and sweet with no bitterness.  I have mine straight, but  I have no doubt it would sustain milk and sugar and not get lost in them.

I’d say that if this type of tea normally scares you, this is the one to try.

Conclusion: Although I can handle a strong black tea, I love that this one will satisfy that need but will also offer a tender, softer side in addition.

At a special price of $2.80 for one once, I only wish I had ordered more!

In my order, I also got a sample of Taiwanese Assam, can’t wait to compare the 2, the description is mouthwatering!

Tea of the morning here… I agree with Bonnie that this has a malty, almost bready quality in the flavor. It has a bit of sweetness too that reminds me ever so slightly of a golden monkey. It has a bit of that sweet potato quality. Not much bitterness in the finish here, it’s good with a splash of soymilk too. Sorry I don’t have time to write much more. I’ve had a few assams I liked better but this is nice.

It’s been a hellacious week at work and I’ve lots of time to try practicing my equanimity and patience a.k.a. – not blowing my top!

TGIF Steepster!

Sipdown!
Sunday morning and I’m just finishing off the 1 oz. I got of this, decided to brew up a whole pot in the beehouse teapot. Assams are one of my favorite things to drink in the morning time and I have definitely enjoyed this.

May all beings be happy. ;)

Well then, that assignment took way much longer than it should have. My prof assigned us the wrong questions and I put hours into it before getting an email to do different ones. Ugh. Now it’s Assam time.

This is one fine Assam. I’m impressed by the lack of astringency here. When I smelled the dry leaf, it smelled very unassuming. I was actually worried that it would be on the dull side, but it’s not at all. It’s more subdued than most Assams, but it’s still ultra malty and thick.

Added a splash of soy milk and it’s oh so tasty and comforting. The milk seems to bring out notes of cacao? It’s like a dessert, but yet it isn’t, if that makes sense. Probably due to the lack of astringency.

Very happy with this Assam, I am!

Mad sip down as an effort to get caffeine in my body in order to face the hours of article-reading and paper-writing going on tonight. This is a comforting one. Wasn’t it discontinued? Either way, I am happy to have had it in my cupboard.

Backlogging from Friday before we went camping for the weekend. I didn’t really have any good tea on the weekend, other than this one.

This is a lighter assam, not as bold as other assams I have tried. It is also less astringent than others, which is a plus. Sometimes it is nice to have a breakfast tea that doesn’t kick you in the face! It is malty and smooth.

I added a splash of milk halfway into the cup because I feel any Assam or English Breakfast really needs that milk to taste really good. The milk brought out the malty flavours to this tea even more.

I am glad that I picked this up while it was on sale. Less than $3 for an ounce!

I have decided that I deserve and tea an treat morning! This smooth malty Assam paired with a dark chocolate cookie. The flavours of the cookie really bring out the sweetness and chocolate notes in this lovely Assam!
I don’t think this is available anymore from Butiki, but I will certainly enjoy my remaining package.

Mmmmm! I purchased this tea when it was on sale, wanting to be able to compare Stacy’s Assam with another Assam that I have. Im not sure why I hadn’t opened it until today but I’m certainly glad that I did. I think I actually may prefer this one to the other black tea from Butiki that I’ve tried. This tea is bold while also being smooth and satisfying. There are malty tones in this tea, but not as strong as say, loashan black from verdant. This tea is a nice easy wake up in the morning. I love my black teas and this is no exception. While not a knock your socks off HELLO OMG WAKE UP TEA! It is a smooth, black tea with no atringency. Nice work stacy!

wheeeeee! Moar tea! I’m not too sure why I’m so happy today but it’s a good day. One more day to prepare for my client meeting on friday and then it’s the weekend! Which of course will be full of testing and other work related things but it’ll be the weekend! And I can get groceries and spend the rest of the weekend drinking tea at home while i work.

Maybe if i get lucky I can get in one of the games we picked up in the pas 2 weeks that I haven’t had a chance to open yet sigh

mmm I still enjoy this tea. I made this in the morning and thanks to my wonderful travel mug it’s still warm after having my other tea this morning. THIS is the kind of flavour i was hoping for from the other tea this morning. I love that this tea has a rich taste that doesn’t just turn into orange pekkoe or yellow water. heh Also hoping to snag an order from stacy this weekend i think it was to try the other assam that was accidentally shipped to them whee! mmmmmm tea!

Mmmmmm sip down! This is a really nice malty light Assam. I’m sorry to see it go but I have new teas to look forward to coming from Stacy. I really enjoyed this one, so thank you Stacy!

Day got away from me. It want to curl up in the bed and go to sleep. Today sucked. Tea was great.

mmmmm this is a tasty bold tea for this morning. Lots of work to do today and this is going to help. I do enjoy this tea quite a bit. I love that there is no astringency in this tea even when over brewed. This tea is malty and bold but there are also hints of sweet as it slides down my throat. Looking forward to trying a few of the other blacks that Stacy’s got going on :)

mmmmm morning tea. This goes especially well with pumpkin spice ghiradelli chocolate. I’m sooo happy it’s friday! I get the weekend to sleep in and readjust to being back.

Almost done drinking this one down, not so much because i’m in a mad rush to do so but because I have so many other delicious teas coming from Stacy. I really like the richness of this tea.

Yay first tea of the morning….have to warm up my taste buds for the samples I received yesterday. Heh. I will miss this tea when it’s gone but I’m really looking forward to the new teas that stacy has so all is good!

Once upon a time there was a girl who drank Assam for breakfast everyday. Then she got caught up in comparing various English, Irish, Parisian, & other breakfast blends. She loved them all, & it’s so much fun comparing them, savoring them, but once in awhile it’s nice to go back to your roots!

This is a really nice Assam! It’s everything it should be, Malty, hints of chocolate, & not a touch of astringency or bitterness! Thank you, Stacy, for your lovely teas!

I’m working on polishing off several teas that I have fairly small quantities of. Today it is this Organic Assam from Butiki. It’s nice & bold, with a bit of a fruity quality too it, and some Malt, & I’ve enjoyed it, but now it’s gone! Onward through the fog…

My breakfast with Ari was really nice, & a great chance for us to play catchup, as we haven’t been able to hang out much lately. As a mother, I’m happy to have my children getting out into the world and having their own lives, no empty next syndrome going on here! But at the same time, my kids are my best friends, and it’s nice to get to sit with them, individually, & just enjoy a morning together.

I let Ari pick the teas for breakfast, and her tea selections all tend to lean towards ‘dessert’, whereas I usually start with something bold. Now that she has gone back out into the world, I’m having a pot of this tasty Assam, which is a little malty, robust, and satisfying, and then it’s off to the Chiropractor.

First Review. My First Ever Assam I had to highlight this so I can find it among my reviews since I do go on and on…blah blah blah! Anyway, I was so glad to add this to my recent Butiki order since I keep running into people commenting on how much they love Assam as a staple in their Tea Cupboard or how much they dislike Assam. There seems to be no wishy washy feelings here. It’s a dramatic like or dislike. My vote on the matter was going to be cast. I was going to have to judge an Assam for myself.
I did not read any notes on Assams before tasting just to be fair to my easily influenced sponge brain.
This was my breakfast tea today and it is a very fine misty Frontrange morning.
There is first a fine malty, bready fragrance. I had steeped 4.5 minutes before pouring and added a bit of sweetening (not too much) and some cream. The liquor was nice and dark which I like when adding cream. The flavor is super rich and malty without astringency or sourness which would ruin the homemade bread quality of this tea. My daughter makes bread and the aroma fills the air when baking. Her sourdough is super fine. This tea reminds me of homemade bread but without being too yeasty or sour. I think it’s something about the crust or crumbs that I’m reminded of in the tea. I drank a 24oz pot of tea and was disappointed. Ar…I wanted more. I’m going to make another pot before going to Church later. This will keep me sharp! I am voting a YES on Assam…or at least on this Assam!

It’s a beautiful cool rainy day on the Frontrange. This follows a 91F hot day yesterday so you can imagine how happy us mountain people are feeling today!
Last night my granddaughter Megan (16) conducted her school choir in an original composition that she wrote in Latin about the death of Ceasar. It was fantastic! I am so proud of all the kids…but she’s my kindred spirit.
For breakfast I decided on this Butiki Organic Assam. I love the fact that it is Organic and relatively mild. The tea is smooth like velvet…without astringency or heavy raw edged smokiness. I know there are those who want that more assertive type of robust Assam. Something akin to drinking white lightenin. I really do like my black tea’s strong and sexy…don’t get me wrong…but I like them to have some manners too. When it’s all said and done, I want to remember days later that this tea gave me a good time.

And, this tea is a good time!
(It’s my first choice today of a Birthday tea!)

The weather report for 8 inches of snow was a joke. Ha ha on Fort Collins again. We got about 1.5 inches which will be melted by Saturday morning. Bah!

The Rocky Mountains act as an umbrella of sorts, with snow falling heavy at higher elevations, then gathering strength as it passes over the Frontrange (where I live)…chugging full steam towards the plains then Eastward to unfurl wings of heavy snow.

Ah well. The dream of every low-land California child I was for snow. We prayed for it! In my lifetime, it snowed twice in the San Francisco Bay Area Streets…so as an adult, that dream of snow still burns and I get excited.

This morning I was sitting with my tea-tray (as I always do) watching the last snow-flakes drift down…more ‘snowkle’ than flakes.

I brewed a pot of tea on the strong side, cream and sweetening to add if needed.

Today, I noticed a strong savory flavor that I missed in earlier tastings. While some Assams are very malty, this one weighs heavier on the savory side and reminds me of a very good Kenyan Tea blended with an Assam.

I’ve tasted the new Assam’s from Butiki, but I like the savory flavor here more that I had remembered and would likely return to this Organic Assam over the newer ones.

Yum, morning tea…reminds me of homemade wheat toast with melted butter!
