From Butiki Teas

This delicate tea pairs our lovely Organic Silver Needle with vibrant amaranth petals and a natural watermelon flavor. We highly recommend drinking this tea warm or with sugar to bring out the natural watermelon flavor. At a high temperature the flavor is not as strong. At a warm temperature, this tea is light and refreshing and starts out with floral and honey notes that quickly develop into juicy watermelon notes that linger. Add a little sugar and the tea bursts with a natural juiciness that tastes like fresh watermelon juice and finishes with floral and honey notes. This batch of Watermelon Xylophone is offered at a reduced rate, since we will be using a new Organic Silver Needle that is more expensive for future batches. For information on how we named this tea, check out our blog: http://butikiteas.blogspot.com/2012/08/behind-name-watermelon-xylophone-edition.html

Another hit from Butiki! Visually, beautiful combination of greens and reds, reminding me of a watermelon immediately. The taste initially was very good, and after reading The Tea Fairy review I decided to wait a bit and let it cool it down…. the difference was noticeable! It is my favorite Butiki now! Thank you Stacy for this sample, it is on the top of my reorder list now!

This was the second tea I tried from my Butiki order. After experiencing a bit of a letdown with the Pistachio Ice Cream tea I tried first, I was happy to find that Watermelon Xylophone did not disappoint!

The dry leaf smells like fresh, ripe watermelon with a light white tea undertone. (It’s also quite beautiful, with lovely fuzzy silver needles accented with bright pink petals! <3 ) The scent translates directly to the taste – it is the flavour of a beautiful buttery white tea with a squeeze of fresh watermelon juice. Refreshing and light and not at all artificial. My boyfriend declared it the best white tea he has ever tasted!

Definitely will be ordering more of this one in the future!

I got this as a sample from Butiki mostly because of its name. I just had to try it.

It smells great. Like very sweet watermelon. The taste didn’t hit me as much until I took a few sips. It tastes like melon! Just sweet enough for me, it didn’t need any sugar or honey.

Probably not a tea I’ll buy again because it just isn’t the type of tea I’d drink a lot but if you like melon or sweeter teas give this a shot.

I received a sample of this tea from a recent order and I was beyond impressed. The dry leaf has a wonderfully sweet honey almost caramel scent that sets the stage. Once brewed this sweet base acts to enhance watermelon flavor and is a perfect pairing. As the tea cooled the more subtle floral notes and the sweet watermelon flavor and scent really blossomed. Overall this tea really shines and was best just slightly warmer than room temperature. I don’t add any sweetener to my teas as a rule and I found that there was no need to do so here. This is tea is definitely worth trying and I can only imagine how wonderful this would be iced.

This tea tastes like liquid summer. I don’t even understand how that kind of wizardry is possible… The watermelon flavor is present but doesn’t overpower the silver needle base.. which is great because I absolutely love silver needle. The little flowers make this a very pretty tea to look at, but I’m not sure I notice them in the taste?

It tastes just like watermelon! Not in a jolly rancher sort of way, but a REAL watermelon sort of way!! Might have to snag some more with my next order. I oversteeped it a little so it’s a bit tannic (is that a word?) and lukewarm, but I don’t mind at all. I was in the process of steeping it at work and got caught up with an ER patient.

This was the last of four samples that came with my first Butiki order. Now to dive into my actual order. ;)

So it’s tasting note 2,500 for me! Not a big a deal, as another Steepsterer hit 4,000 just the other day. But I keep truckin along with my tasting notes. :D But how about a special tea for #2,500? How about a new to me Butiki tea?! That gets a very high Steepster rating?! Thanks for including this in the awesome tea package, StarFevre! I somehow never tried this one in the Butiki days. And I love the melon teas. I wanted a white tea today so a decent amount of these sickle shaped leaves with cute pink flowers went into the infuser. The dry leaves still smell like melon! More cantaloupe than watermelon, but I certainly prefer that anyway. And both steeps still had a HUGE amount of melon flavor. Awesomely unexpected. I usually don’t think a sickle shaped white tea has enough flavor, but this one had quite the nice sweet mellow base for the melon flavor. Maybe I steeped the right amount of leaves. I can always appreciate when an aging tea is still delicious!
Steep #1 // 20 minutes after boiling // 70 second steep
Steep #2 // 12 minutes after boiling // 3 minute steep

Edited to add: Scratch that. The third steep is very melony too! At least when I used just boiled water. And now I will stop drinking this tonight and save it for tomorrow as it is 11:19 and I don’t need the caffeine! I wonder how the Butiki tea magician is doing these days? Not getting tea flavors to magically last forever, I suppose. :D

Cold steeped in the fridge, then put through a sodastream machine!

You got that?! Carbonated tea is awesome!!!! It adds an extra bit of refreshing to an already delightful tea. Adding the CO2 tricks my taste buds into registering things as a little sweeter without the sugar. I think I’m going to carbonate all my cold steeped tea from now on.

Aren’t you only supposed to put water in the machine and then flavor afterwards? I know that was the case with mine but mine was very old.

Dustin

Yeah, that’s what they say. I got mine second hand from a friend who suggested to disregard those instructions and make sure to clean the spout after use, so that is what I do. She said she tried it the recommended way which was hit or miss when adding the flavoring because you never knew when the flavoring would cause a bubbling over reaction.

Kaylee

Brilliant! I can’t wait to try this!

Sipdown 67/376!

Thanks to Janelle once again for the opportunity to try this.

Sadly this sample was another victim to the ravages of time, I think. I didn’t have quite enough leaf left over, because I’d drank this before (and remember it being nicer then, too) and had maybe overleafed a little. So this time I had a smaller cup to make up for it, rather than underleafing, and I can’t say it helped very much. There wasn’t much left of the watermelon flavour, particularly when hot it was nonexistent, but the white tea base had also significantly faded to the point where it was slightly floral with not much else, and hardly any body. Watermelon is a tricky flavour anyway, since it’s not exactly a strong one to begin with, so I hadn’t hoped for much particularly knowing how old my sample was and how poorly I’d stored it, so again I’m taking onus for that one. At least I wasn’t too disappointed. Stacy does recommend adding sugar, which helped, and letting the cup cool, which also helped to some extent. It was never the flavour explosion that some Butiki teas are, but with the added sugar and the lower temperature it was quite enjoyable. The watermelon flavour is subtle, but sweet and juicy and does work well with the base. It’s as good a watermelon tea as I’ve found.
