From Butiki Teas

Creamy Eggnog is part of our holiday series that encompasses a number of holidays from different religions. Many people might not think of eggnog as their number one choice for a Christmas flavor but Eggnog is particularly important in my family’s tradition of celebrating Christmas. Eggnog always marked the beginning of the Christmas season and was the last thing we would drink before we would try to go to sleep Christmas Eve. As a child, getting any sleep Christmas Eve would have been a miracle. There was always so much excitement and anticipation building. Creamy Eggnog pairs our buttery Organic Huangshan Mao Feng with a rich creamy eggnog flavor. The tea and flavor work well with each other and neither overshadows the other. This tea is sweet with a heavy cream and eggy quality. Add a little brown crystal sugar and the tea becomes extremely creamy, rich, and very much like eggnog. Some vanilla notes become pronounced and so do the egg notes. We added safflower for a touch of red for a festive Christmas colored tea.

Ingredients: Organic Chinese Tea, Safflower, Organic Natural Flavoring

Recommended Brew Time: 4 minutes
Recommended Amount: 2 teaspoons of tea for 8oz of water
Recommended Temperature: 180 F

Last tea of the evening as I’m having a pretty rough day today. I was good for the most part until my other half came home and made me talk about why i was upset lol. Good on him of course (and nothing to do with him) but now i’m all cried out and dehydrated. So after having some more water and some food, i wanted a comforting tea to end the night with. Something that would be enough to put a smile on my face without me having to venture into a new tea or find a sample to sip down. As i flipped through my cupboard it was this one that first caught my eye – likely since i try to stay away from blacks this late in the evening, even if the caffeine doesn’t affect me.

So now i’m sipping on this creamy cup of happy. I enjoy that even though this is sweet and creamy, i can still taste the green base in the tea. I’m also chuckling a little at Ysaurella who also had a cup of this tonight who doesn’t enjoy this as much as i do. Perfectly alright of course, but just a reminder of how different things work for different people. :)

Courtney

Hope tomorrow is better :)

Lala

Hope you feel better!

Sil

Tomorrow is always another day. My cup of tea is helping :) appreciate it guys

MissLena

Feel better soon! Thank goodness for tea :)

Miss Starfish

Hope things improve :)

Donna A

I like this one, enough that I re-ordered it. Its especially nice in the evening.

Fjellrev

Hold your chin up! I hope you’ll feel better too.

Ysaurella

absolutely agree Sil, and as the ratings were so high for this tea I know I will retry it (I am always doing several try with teas anyway this is often a question of personal taste and personal arrangments with steeping times, amount of leaves etc…)

Indigobloom

Good man, your bf! tell him I approve ;)

Butiki Teas

Sorry to hear that you aren’t feeling so great. I hope today is treating you better.

OH man oh man oh man. This is delicious. It smells rich and creamy and like vanilla. It tastes…. rich and creamy and like vanilla. Eggy vanilla (you know what I mean, yes?). The spices, however, are not making themselves known to me as much as I would have expected.

I was originally going to say that I can’t taste the base tea, but as I’m sitting here, I am definitely tasting it coming through all creamy and vegetal and delicious. I actually ordered a bag of this base as well, so I can have some fun identifying flavours later.

Anyways…. this is very, very good. I’m not detecting too much spicing, which tempts me to put in a dash of nutmeg and itty bitty pinch of cinnamon (or whatever the heck spices are in eggnog) next time I brew it, but this is by far the best vanilla tea I’ve tried. The choice of base is absolutely perfect.

Ah… that went down quickly. I guess that means it’s bedtime. Good thing, eyes only half open while writing tasting note….

ETA: The re-steep is amazingly delicious as well, just a bit less intense. I can hardly wait to try the base tea by itself (but not tonight: too tired!)

Preparation
180 °F / 82 °C 4 min, 0 sec
Butiki Teas

Actually, I had planned to spice it up a bunch but after tasting it this way, I just couldn’t do it. The base definitely adds to the buttery-ness.

Sil

Nice, looking forward to trying this

Donna A

Just put in a Butiki order. Will have to wait until next time, but sounds really good.

Sil

there are a few new butiki teas coming out so we’ve got lots to be able to have in new orders!

Kittenna

Sil – I think you will love this whether or not you hate eggnog. I can definitely get the eggnog reference, but you could definitely also take this as a vanilla custard tea, or somesuch. And it’s blended amazingly. The base was a perfect choice.

Also, yeah. I will likely buy an ounce or two or this plus all the other new holiday teas once they are out…. siiiiigh! Probably a bit more of the Maple Pecan Oolong as well…

Kittenna

Also Stacy – I re-read your tasting note and noticed that you had mentioned opting not to super spice it all up! So I retract my comment about being disappointed about the lack of spicing (it really is quite fabulous as is) and instead will endeavour to make it a bit more eggnoggy with spicing myself, just out of curiousity’s sake. It would be a shame to cover the delicious creaminess though.

Cavocorax

Sounds great. I’ve never tried any Butiki teas but it seems I’ll have to correct that in the new year!

Kittenna

I highly recommend doing so!

Sil

Cavocorax dooooo it! sooo tasty!

Sil

Also Kittena – I’ll be placing an order to pick up at the very least, this and the plum pudding one stacy’s working on. We should coordinate later :)

Kittenna

Totally agree! No way I can hit $75 on my own again for a while, but I’m going to want a bunch of the new stuff. Since we have to meet up in January due to Kally Teas & Verdant anyways, we may as well place joint orders until then, haha.

Sil

i rarely hit 75 – i just pay for the shipping since it’s damn reasonable from stacy compared to other companies coughthepersimmontreecough

Kittenna

Oh, it’s reasonable. I just like to avoid paying shipping if I can :D

Indigobloom

ohhhhh dear, I feel my resolve slipping! I wanna try this sooo badly, but I have so much to drink down first. Ack!

I’m thinking I received this in a swap from VariaTea, but I’m not 100% sure. It just says “Creamy Eggnog” typed on it, along with some steeping instructions. No company name, so I’m assuming this is Butiki, and assuming this was from VariaTea just because this was with other samples she sent me. I hope I got that right!

I may have underleafed this accidentally. It still smells and tastes creamy to me though, although I’m missing anything eggnog flavored, such as nutmeg. Didn’t get anything else out of it sweetened, other than, well, it’s sweeter. Light, creamy, lovely. Just not eggnog to me. Not rating because I think I have some on the way, and because I’m pretty sure I underleafed the sample.

Thanks to whomever sent this to me! :)

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 4 min, 0 sec
VariaTEA

Nope this was not something I sent. I am sorry to hear it was not as flavorful as you thought it would be though.

Roswell Strange

I really enjoy this with a 2 tsp. of leaf to 10 oz. ratio – but taste wise it’s more like vanilla ice cream to me…

MissB

Hm. Now I’m really curious as to who sent this. Perhaps JustJames? I know it wasn’t Allie. JennyFur?

MissB

Rowell, I definitely underleafed then. I think it I used the entire sample at 1.5 tsp for 16 oz. It’s okay though, it’s yummy enough for me to get more (if there isn’t any in the box I pickup tomorrow in the US… honestly drawing a blank).

VariaTEA

I know JustJames prints out labels but he included steep times and company names on all the ones he sent me.

MissB

He did with many of mine too – this one was a smaller bag and different font though? I’ll wait for Monsieur James to chime in.

OMGsrsly

Ooooh, box pickup tomorrow? Teas this week some time? :) I’m busy Wednesday “after work” but my schedule is fairly flexible.

MissB

Sounds lovely to me! I’ll let you know once I’ve successfully grabbed everything tomorrow.

MissB

I’ve planned my day poorly and now need to pickup Wednesday evening. I’ve got some time Thursday during the day to get it to you?

JustJames

pardon moi? someone mention me? scan read…. scan read….. NOPE! i print labels because i can’t write worth sh** with the wrecked hand. really big printing, yes, like 1 inch minimum, but that doesn’t work on baggies of tea samples so well, lol. never even tried this blend either.

sorry, twas not i!

OMGsrsly

Haha. If we can arrange it so I can get to work before 10am, yes Thursday. Boss is back, so I have to be here at a “decent” time.

OMGsrsly

Or, you know, “after work” kind of times. I usually work 10-5 or so.

MissB

I’ll likely be after work kinda time, and prior to a comedy show I’m attending… I’m quite the night owl. :$ Getting me up before 10am is rare, although I can if need be!

OMGsrsly

Sure thing. I’ll message you my number. :)

Tea of the afternoon here….

My package arrived from Butiki and I couldn’t want to try this! I haven’t had eggnog in ages.

I steeped this according to instructions and it is better than I was hoping. The aroma is very authentic. After tasting I went to go add a wee bit of turbinado sugar and I bet this would also be really good with soymilk. I’m getting the nutmeg, vanilla and the creaminess, even a bit of the booziness.

Ah Stacy, you have created a real winner here, this is delicious. A wonderful treat with a fraction of calories of a real eggnog (and much healthier, I imagine). I think this will be gone rather quickly. ;-)

I was going to make some of the Eggnog & Pralines that VariaTEA sent me instead, but then I noticed I only had about two cups worth of this in my pretty green tin so I made a cup of this one instead, and stuffed the last of it in a little baggie so I can sip it down tomorrow. Now I’ve got another free tin and can transfer something else into it!

Since I don’t have any green tea en route in any sort of quantity and I don’t plan on buying any anytime soon, I think I’ll be moving my White Angel into it. White Angel is a white/green hybrid so it doesn’t bug my OCD that much that it’ll be in the green tin (tea types must have tins that match their colour, damnit! Which is why I own SO MANY DT tins). I debated restocking this one; but ultimately it’s just a really good vanilla tea; but just a vanilla tea none the less…

That’s just not something I reach for often or really feel I need to keep stocked up. There are so many other Butiki blends that I love much more! Parting will be such sorrow though…

I’ll get to Eggnog & Pralines eventually…

Flavors: Cream, Vanilla

VariaTEA

Or is your free green tin an opportunity to pick up some Banana Pudding Genmaicha which you will consequently share with me? :P

Roswell Strange

Nope :P Only order I’m allowing myself is a Butiki order – after that no more until July! I want to finish off samples and sipdown yucky things, but then I want to get back to enjoying the things I have stocked up in larger quantity and love.

Roswell Strange

My dream goal is to finish off ALL my samples and reach a point where I have nothing coming in: only things going out. That way I can just freely drink what I want.

This is one of my favorites

I received a sample of this tea with my last order from Butiki Teas, and based on what everyone else has been saying about this tea, I’m really excited to try it.

Oh my gawd … I wish I had tried this about two months ago, so that I could use this in my 12 Days of Christmas tea swap. It is so yummy. Maybe not french … but the creamy, custard-y, eggnog is kind of hen-ish… right? Yummy yummy yummy! I’m loving this.

I’ve tried a few eggnog flavored teas, but this one is the best that I’ve tried so far. It is SPOT ON eggnog flavor. All that it needs it a touch of nutmeg … which can be remedied with a little bit of freshly ground nutmeg added right to the teapot before brewing.

Totally and completely, utterly YUM!

Butiki Teas

Yay, glad you are enjoying the tea! Your review made me smile. Just had received the meanest customer email I’ve ever received and it was bumming me out. It probably wasn’t that bad but that was my first negative customer email ever.

Kittenna

Whaaaaaat??? I have no idea what someone could possibly have been grumpy at you about :(

LiberTEAS – I have been dreaming about this tea all day…. it was SOOOOOO good last night. I don’t think my tiny 0.5 ounce package is going to last very long!

Butiki Teas

Kittenna-It was from the Black Friday sale. I guess it wasn’t that bad. A customer was $3 away from qualifying for the bonus $20 in tea. I emailed her and she said she was interested in doing the sale. I’ve been occasionally reminding her that I was still holding her teas (since I didn’t know what bonus teas she wanted or the regular priced tea) and she would occasionally get back to me with additional questions. Then today I got an email saying how frustrated she was and on the verge of canceling the order and that ordering shouldn’t be this difficult and listen up, here’s the deal kind of thing. I guess I got more upset since I thought I was being extra nice.

Glad you guys are enjoying the Creamy Eggnog. I really love that tea! I think I will be bringing this one over to my families for X-Mas.

Kittenna

Sounds like she just has some of her own issues… the sale was quite easy to figure out. I’m sure it stings even if it’s not all that bad, especially if it’s your first irritated customer! People are silly!

mrmopar

butki i think you just set a very high mark for excellent customer service. i wish she had understood. i think personal attention like this will result in great merit for you.

Butiki Teas

Kittenna-Yeah, it was bumming me out. I like to keep my customers happy. I’m trying to turn this one around. I’ve had 4 other orders with issues in the last 4 years but in those cases the customers were nice about it and I fixed the issue and added a little bonus.

mrmopar-That is very kind of you to say.

LiberTEAS

@Butiki Teas: I agree. Your customer service has always been exceptional, and I think that this must just be a case of a misunderstanding on the part of that customer … and I hope that it gets resolved for you.

And yes, this tea rocks. I would rather drink this over real eggnog any day.

mrmopar

butiki you are quite welcome i think personal customer service is lacking in many aspects of todays society. it is often overlooked, but i am old fashioned and the idea of personal service will always take precedent in most of my dealings in any matter. the thought of you keeping the old hand shake tradition alive is lost in much of todays world.

Terri HarpLady

I’ll add my 2 cents worth, Stacy. You are awesome, & even though my order was a little complex, I thought you were super easy to work with and we got it all figured out. And your teas are awesome!

Sil

Stacy, I have to say of all of the tea ordering i do, yours is pretty much tops and the service to which i compare all others. I’m sure someday as i branch out i may find other companies who are as awesome as you but you set a pretty high bar. You always have your customers in mind and often do things for them that make me go “see this…this is how all companies should behave, because it’ll keep me coming back” which of course then devolves into thinking about attractors, and detractors and other such nonsense since that’s part of my day job lol

Butiki Teas

Thanks LiberTEAS, TerriHarpLady & Sil! I’m glad you guys are happy with our service. Its one of our top 2 priorities (the other being quality of tea).

mrmopar-I agree. It is so hard to find any type of store with good customer service. My father goes to this Italian food store where the owner knows all of his customers and what they like to buy and has conversations with everyone. The owner even created a vegan soup especially for me, although later he developed a line of vegan soups because this one soup was doing so well. That’s the type of business I aspire to run. I like to know everyone and do a little extra for my regular customers, whether its adding in bonus samples, offering special deals or adding some samples of blends that aren’t available yet.

Sil

Stacy – liiiike a blend with caramel? grin

Butiki Teas

Sil-Hahhaha. Is this going to be like the grapefruit incident? :D Well, I am working with toffee but I suspect that won’t be good enough. I think you are going to have to supply me with some good caramel ideas to win me over. Caramel almonds? Caramel & Brandy? Caramel cheesecake? Caramel drizzled vanilla ice cream? Caramel cream candies? Caramel poached pears? Caramel Raspberries?

Butiki Teas

Hmmm, maybe a spiced caramel puerh.

Sil

caramel poached pears just sounds like something i need to eat. and ice cream…man i haven’t had ice cream in forever…. caramel cheesecake would be neat to see your take on it compared to say 52 teas heh.

Kittenna

^^ Agreed!

Sil

Oh and if making it like the grapefruit means we get a caramel tea…I can do that Stacy lol

Butiki Teas

Hmm, if the caramel cheesecake has been done before than I would rather not do that. I’ll think about it. I do like the idea of caramel poached pears.

Butiki Teas

Sil-Hahahaha.

LiberTEAS-Sorry for hijacking your review.

LiberTEAS

LOL no need to apologize. It’s been a fun read. :)

Sil

I think hijacking reviews is part of what makes steepster fun! You never know where the conversation may lead!

I keep finding myself writing about the last tea I drank while drinking a new one.

I was trying to resist this tea but I just couldn’t. I don’t like egg nog unless a) it’s filled with alcohol so you can forget the fact that it’s eggs and cream because just in case it’s filled with salmonella, you’ve now got enough alcohol in your system to possibly not be worried or b) it contains no egg or cream like so Delicious’s amazing coconut milk one.

So this tea is already up there in awesomeness, because it is another option and much, much lighter. That’s not to say though that it isn’t filled with flavor. Because it is, it’s so custardy and rich, and amazing. Definitely tastes like eggnog! I’m glad it’s not too spiced because I’ve never been a fan of heavily spiced eggnog.

The base tea is buttery and blends together with the eggnog flavors so well. I was intrigued when Stacy first mentioned on Facebook that it was going to have a green tea base. Honestly I have no idea what would really work with eggnog flavor in a tea but who even cares, this works as it is!

I need to try sweetening it next time. I also tried a second steep but did not enjoy it as much as the first.

Autumn Hearth

I reinfused at 185 for 5 mins and my second steep was awesome!

I’m loving this tea. I feel like the Organic Huangshan Mao Feng and the eggnog flavor work really well together. They work with each other and neither really overshadows the other. Originally, I had designed this blend to have rum, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla and was going to add a lot to it but after trying just the base and our flavoring mixture it seemed perfect and I didn’t want to change anything. This tea might not look so fancy but to me it’s perfect. From sip to sip, I get slightly different tastes. The vegetal notes are still present but the buttery quality of the tea really adds to eggnog. The eggnog is sweet and tastes of heavy cream with an eggy quality. Some sips, I almost get a cake batter flavor. When I add a little brown crystal sugar, the tea is really creamy, rich, and very much like eggnog. Some vanilla notes become a little more pronounced and so do the egg notes and it really is so delicious that I must get every drop out of the cup. One guilty admission, I added safflower because I thought the red safflower with the green tea leaves was a little more Christmas-y.

Butiki Teas

Yay, glad you guys are excited! By the way this is the first of our holiday blends series! This one represents Christmas. Still have Hanukkah, Kwanza, Yule, and Diwali (even though that holiday is over) to go!

Sil

I pretty much hate egg nog but coming from you I’d be tempted….good thing I can probably steal a sample rom kittena lol

Butiki Teas

Sil-Do you like cake batter at all? If so, then this might work for you.

Bonnie

Sounds so good!

Sil

Do I like cake batter…. So doesn’t! Lol half the fun of baking is eating the raw batter and dough…just don’t tell my mother lol

Butiki Teas

Well then, you might like it. A sample would probably be the way to go for that one.

Ok, I retried Creamy Eggnog with a smaller mug, a larger amount of dry leaves and this is a little better to me.
I had a much more present flavour but not what I was expecting.
The funniest with this tea is it was difficult to catch the dry leaves with my teaspoon as if it didn’t want to be drank by me :D
So we may be incompatible :)

The flavour was still too subtle and the green tea base too light for my taste.
But this is my taste, I know a lot of people like this tea for what it is.
Every ingredient is of perfect quality, it is just not a tea for me.

I decided to rate it because, even if my opinion doesn’t reflect the majority, it may be useful for other people.
When I did my Butiki Order I was hesitating between a lot of teas (this tea brand is really fantastic, it’s just like being in a bakery hesitating between a Religieuse or a St Honoré – writing this a big welcome to the new Pope – we love religious names for our pastries in France!)
I choose this one because all the ratings, but absolutely all the ratings were very very high.
So it may be good to have different opinions sometimes, that’s why I give you mine.

An high quality tea but not unfortunately for my palate.

Well, Ysaurella, no one can say you didn’t try, that’s for sure :-)

cteresa

:) I see your dilemma! BTW we are also very big on religious named sweets and cakes (nun´s bellies, abbot´ s puddings, bacon from heaven, oh) and lol the new pope is two cakes at once, a jesuita and argentino ;) (this makes more sense in a pastelaria!)

Drank two steeps of this last night, I was enjoying it SO much. I love this tea.

I was thinking about it though, it’s incredibly creamy and delicious and reminds me of some sort of vanilla-like eggy custard, but the lack of nutmeg and cinnamon means it’s not REALLY technically an eggnog tea.

I’d consider adding spices sometime just to experiment with making it more eggnoggy, but I love it so much as is that I probably never will.

Not sure if this or Pistachio Ice Cream is my favorite!

Eta Drinking a third steep right now.
Decided to give it a try before tossing the leaves. It’s still half decent!

Creamiest. Tea. Ever.
<3

Marzipan

This sounds so good!

Marzipan

Oh, but coconut :(

whatshesaid

I never noticed any coconut taste…and there’s no coconut in it!

Sil

you’re probably thinking hello sweetie for coconut. Creamy eggnog has no coconut

whatshesaid

The flavour description for this tea actually lists coconut!

Marzipan

That’s where I saw it.

Sil

hmmmm so weird. lol i’d never consider this a coconut tea…i’m not relaly much a fan of those lol i rather enjoy this one haha

whatshesaid

I agree this isn’t coconutty at all

Marzipan

If a coconut even looked at it, I can pick it out. I wish I liked them.

Butiki Teas

Hmmmm, if there is coconut in the description there shouldn’t be. Huh.

whatshesaid

It’s where the flavours are listed at the top!
