From Butiki Teas

Our Taiwanese Wild Mountain Black originates from indigenous wild tea plants grown between 2,500 feet and 5,000 feet in the surrounding mountains of Yuchi Township in Taiwan. The tea picking season for this tea is July through August and the supply is limited because the tea is wild. During this time, the tea master will wake up around 4 a.m. to travel the mountains with local tea pickers in search of wild tea. Similar to our Gui Fei Oolong and Mi Xian Black, the leaves of our Wild Mountain black are also bitten by leafhoppers. These bites cause the plant to initiate the healing process which produces sweet honey notes. The honey aroma is unbelievably strong and inviting. Notes of fresh baked pastries and honey linger. Some gentle raisin and caramel notes are also present in this smooth and refreshing tea.

I don’t know if I like this quite as much as I did when I first tried it, so I pushed the rating down a bit. Maybe it’s a different batch? Still very good tea.

Butiki Teas

That depends on when you last had the tea. We have had this harvest in stock since August (harvested July). Before that we ran out in maybe April-ish.

You know, I’m not sure. I had only tried a sample of this before today, and I’m not sure when I acquired that sample. The difference could also easily have something to do with how I brewed it this time compared to last…

This one has a very strong honey flavor, and it’s quite sweet for a straight back tea. I definitely don’t get funnel cake or waffles or anything like that, but then I tend not to pick up on pastry/baked good notes in teas. It’s not for me – I don’t tend to like teas that are strong on the honey – but I am enjoying my cup. Thanks for the sample – and for allowing me to satisfy my curiosity – Fuzzy_Peachkin!

After all the hype surrounding this tea I was excited to try it. I kept checking Butiki Teas, waiting for it to be back in stock. My wish is finally granted!

I got the package today and this was the first thing I tried. I accidentally steeped it for too long — at least twice as long as I was supposed to. I was kicking myself, thinking I had wasted my leaves and was about to have a bitter cup. This was not the case! My tea was sweet, strong, and almost spicy. The closest thing I can liken this to is cinnamon raisin bread. YUM! This was worth the wait.

Raisin and caramel notes and the smell of honey. Creamy and lingering sweet taste. I am really getting the raisin notes with this brew.

2013 Taiwanese Wild Mountain Black

I’ve wanted to taste this tea for some time but it has been out of stock until the new summer harvest arrived. Well it’s back in stock and today I received my order (early delivery because I won the Birthday contest with this tea as the prize – lucky, lucky me). I rushed right to the kitchen to open the box and make my first cup.

These leaves are gorgeous! They are delicate, very dark, long and lightly twisted (almost black with flecks of amber on a few of them). The smell of the dry leaf seems a little earthy but also fruity – not terribly strong but just enough to entice you.

I followed the brewing instructions given to me by Stacy – gongfu brewing; 1.5 tsp per 8 oz for a sweeter tea. As the leaves began to unfurl the aroma was fabulous and the liquor became a light reddish brown – almost a rusty color. The mouthfeel is very, very smooth with absolutely no astringency. My first impression is that this tea seems subtle but very complex. The flavor is definitely sweet and honey-like with both caramel and dark chocolate overtones coming through yet it is also fruity and malty. With later sips, as the tea cools, I begin to pick up a sweet bread and molasses flavor.

Before sending my tea, Stacy described the difference between this year’s harvest and that from last year: “Due to the rain situation in Taiwan, the leaf hoppers weren’t as active this year so there are less honey notes. Last year was more of a croissant and honey taste this year is more of a waffles and powdered sugar. The tea comes across a bit more which I like. It’s different but not by much.”

Place your order – this tea is a must try! I’m off to try my second infusion……

Oh. My. God. This is the best black tea I have ever had!

The flavor is so light, yet it has so many layers to it. I taste honey and cinnamon, and something almost fruity lingers in the aftertaste.

There’s no astringency to it, either. I think I may have oversteeped it a little bit, because there’s a slight smoky-bitter taste, too, but it doesn’t hinder my enjoyment of this cup! Every sip is a total sensory delight!

Awww yeah, I’ve been waiting for this one to be back in stock so I can try it.
In the bag it smells quite peppery. After steeping it smells like plum pudding. The taste is great and reminds me of dark fruit, berries, mild artichoke, maybe white wine a little bit. It has a creaminess to it that makes it very easy drinking. After drinking this for awhile it definitely reminds me of berries.

I have decided that when it comes to black teas with me, it is either I like it or I do not. There does not seem to be much middle ground. Luckily, this tea easily falls into the like category.

The steeped leave produced a dark gold liquid with what I can only describe as a calm smell. I discovered that this smell was in fact, a reflection of the tea itself. The taste is definitely calming, but I would rather describe it as smooth. To me, this is a good quality in a black tea. To be honest, I do not know how to describe the taste in this tea. I would suggest that it has a sweet taste, but other than that, it just taste fresh and smooth.

This is a tea that I would definitely like to keep around; for breakfast or after a meal or whenever I want a black tea.

I was so excited when my order finally hit home (after been lost in the mail somehow because of the poor intelligence of the workers at my local post office) I was ready to try this brew so much. This morning I had this black tea and I could not believe the flavors this tea has. The tea has a dominating aroma of butter which is nice, no too overpowering and I get a very faint aroma of honey. This tea rocks and will rock anyone in love with black tea.
