Pu Er 1996 Chung Cha

Pu-erh Tea by Camellia Sinensis

This Sheng (raw) Pu Er has a vegetal character still present despite nearly 15 years of aging in Asia. Its generous leaves release notes of leather and fresh peat, a fruity note of ripe ground cherry and a slightly bitter vegetal note, reminiscent of the skin of cucumber, tickle the palate. Offering a nice complexity and an evolution of aromas over reinfusions, this vintage will delight fans of Sheng Pu Er.

Quantity of leaf / 250ml of water 1 tea spoon
Infusion Time 4-5 minutes
Infusion temperature 95 °C

Another sheng style pu-erh for me from CS. Whoo-hoo! I think I am officially hooked, as if I wasn’t already.

If you have never spent time in a rustic cabin, a very old, rustic cabin, I cannot explain this to you in any meaningful way. There is a way that lumber smells when it spends a lot of time in the sun, and fabric smells when it spends a lot of time exposed to damp nights, and even the way soil and dust smell when they both come from and interact with these warm boards and stones and mildewing fabrics.

That is exactly how these tea smell dry, and wet, and how the liqueur presents in the cup. The dry leaves bring out more of the warm lumber and dust, the wet and the liqueur bring out more of the mildew and wet stone.

This is like drinking camp. And I love it.

Using up the last of this, today.

I don’t know why I love drinking something that tastes like the demolition site of pre-war construction, but I do. I love it.

Having the last of this on this gray, drizzling morning. Apparently, typical Houston winters are like typical Rhode Island autumns. I guess the good news is that this is as bad as it gets and once this passes we’re back into the sunshine, rather than transitioning from this to four months of snow.

I really enjoyed this particular raw pu-erh. But after 200g of it (two orders of 100 at different times) I need a break, and I want to go back to the more mellow, soft flavors of my beloved fermented pu-erhs. A man can only drink so much construction site dust.

I ordered from Camellia again and accidentally ordered the same pu erh as last time. Probably because it is the oldest one they offer I can justify buying.

I still love this tea, and it still tastes like a basement renovation.

Ce que j’aime de ce Puerh c’est qu’on sent qu’il est encore “on the edge” de maturer, il est encore vert et en train de tourner vers le terrestre. Vraiment une belle découverte!
