Harvest Moon (Blend)

Black Oolong Blend by Custom-Adagio Teas

Created by: Meg Daunting

The nights are turning cool and the green of summer is shifting to the reds and golds of autumn. A limited edition tea blend, Harvest Moon is rich with the flavor of pumpkin spices and almonds with hints of cocoa and caramel. Perfect to share with your fellow wolves while you howl at the moon and sure to warm you up right to your toes. Recommended steep time is 3 minutes at typical black tea temperatures. Use 1.5-2 teaspoons per generous mugful for a stronger taste.

This tea is inspired by MTV’s Teen Wolf and the Farmers Almanac of full moon names.

Ingredients:
almond oolong, pumpkin spice, tiger eye
Accent:
cocoa nibs

I saw this tea on Adagio’s site, & who could resist? It’s a blend of Almond oolong, pumpkin spice, & tiger eye, with some cacao nibs thrown in for an extra treat. For my own education, I also ordered sample sizes of all three tea components, which I’ll review individually at some later time. This was my first order from Adagio.

The dry tea smells terrible, in my opinion. Very chemical smelling.
I steeped: 1.5 tsp for 3 minutes
The brewed tea smells: well, truthfully, I’m not really smelling much…black tea…a hint of caramel..
I left it sit on my counter for a few minutes while I stepped out into my garden to pick a few things: A mix of lettuces, a daikon radish, some cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, looks like I’m having a little salad with dinner!
So the tea: plain, it’s meh, but a bit of stevia changed that. There is a caramel note, a little almond, where are the spices? Maybe my taste buds just aren’t picking things up like they should. I admit, I’m not usually a huge fan of flavored teas, because in most cases you have to add some kind of sweetener to experience the flavors. I’m also not really getting a mouth-feel of much…no thick chocolate sensation, no bright butteryness. On the good side, it’s not excessively drying either.

It’s not bad, & again, some of that may be my tastebuds. Many of us have noticed that our taste for a tea changes from time to time. Obviously, when we’re sick we’re affected, but who knows what else might effect our ability to perceive flavors, sensations, aromas, etc. So, although this may not be my favorite cup of the day (that was the Zhu Rong Yunnan), it’s not a bad tasting tea either. I don’t dislike it, & I’ll drink some more on another day & report my findings! :D

This afternoon I played an xmas concert at a retirement home. I steeped this to drink on my way to my gig. I’ve concluded that I don’t really care for it.

I’m still not sure how I feel about this blend…The smell of the dry tea is unpleasant to me, kind of chemical, but my son Drew really likes the smell of it. I don’t taste any pumpkin, & at first sip, my mouth & all its part say, “yum”, but then after a few sips, it tastes kind of phony. I’ve tried it plain (mehhh), I’ve tried it with stevia, which is better. I also tried it with coconut milk, which wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. I’ll probably let Drew drink up the rest of the blend, as he really likes it (along with Farewell Ponds)

Sipdown 9. For awhile my sample box has been thinning out, so I’ve been feeling pretty accomplished. The number of teas in my cupboard has’t changed much, but I usually won’t include samples that are too small to share. This morning I went ahead and added every single tea I own into my cupboard. To my horror, it jumped from a relatively manageable 85 to 116!!! Looks like I have a lot of sipdowns to do. Anyway, back to the review…

The pumpkin is the most prominent flavor in this blend. For some reason I taste a lot of maple (which is not a listed ingredient), and I’m missing the almond. The spice is a bit understated, but still present. The maple notes complements the pumpkin flavor rather nicely, so I’m really enjoying this cup.

Thanks for sharing, JennyFur!

So I don’t even watch Teen Wolf (well I didn’t, I decided to check it out a few days ago) but I saw this on the popular blends page and I need some seasonal teas!
Dry this smells like a almond cookie with spice and caramel. Sweet but not overpowering.
It brews up nice and dark, with the almond oolong as the strongest smell and spice after that.
Strong and smooth, definitely get that base oolong taste and black tea gives a bit more body. A bit earthy/wood, probably from the oolong and a slight astringency. The pumpkin isn’t super evident and brings more spice/chai flavors than pumpkin. Yum!
