Black Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Kiss me, kiss me

Okay, this is probably the world’s best chocolate tea. Honestly. Better than dessert. More reliable than sex. It’s a totally decadent combination of China black tea, vanilla, peppermint, chocolate bits and spicy red peppercorns. Plus it contains little red candy lips for a kiss of sweetness. In other words, it’s a completely satisfying spring experience with no guilt or strings attached.

Ingredients: Chinese black tea, peppermint, dark chocolate, red lip sprinkles, pink peppercorns, natural and artificial flavouring*.

Allergens: Soy and dairy

Ever since that first taste of Santa’s Secret on Remembrance Day I have been craving it like madness! This tea will have to tide me over since it’s snowing out, and i mean really snowing. I was going to go downtown to the DAVIDsTEA to pick up some of the seasonal teas, but alas, it was not to be. Carting around a 10-month-old is tough enough, but with the addition of 5cm of freshly fallen snow it was not happening. So, I drink this tea and attempt to trick myself into thinking that it’s Santa’s Secret… just… with the addition of chocolate. BUT it’s not happening and the chocolate just isn’t jiving with me today.

One day my tea will come… one daaaaaaay my tea will come!

P.s. This is tasting a little better as it cools off, but still not the tea that I need!

Drinking up the last of this, since according to my tasting notes I haven’t logged this since August 2011!! Oi! Good thing I finished it too, the flavours are super stale… ugh. Maybe my toddler will enjoy this more than I…

So I got a sample of this ages ago…. and forgot all about it! I only found it when rooting through my “almost done” pile.
Anyhow, before I present my opinion, I must say… that I am not the biggest fan of peppermint in my tea unless I have tummy issues. Between that, and my dislike for peppercorn, well I think I am the only one on this website to NOT have a love affair with this tea :(
I think it’s ok, not terrible, but really not fantastic either. The milk helps, but I’m barely getting any chocolate flavour, as the other ingredients completely overwhelm it, and that was the part of this tea I had looked forward to most. Bleh!
I feel as if this one is trying to be Chocolate Chili Chai, but coming in wayyyy behind. It tastes weak to. I’ve found that Chinese blacks rarely ever mix well with other ingredients so I somewhat expected that.
Oh and the red lips never dissolved in my tea master! what’s the point of having them in the tea if they never add anything to it?
I’m glad I have only a sample. This is definitely not on the rebuy list.

Another tea I KNOW I’ve written notes for and yet I can’t find them.
I’ve noticed that if you click on the heart/likes link, it will take you to the review and show you others from that person but that is not the case here. That’s frustrating, because I would really like to compare this to my previous notes. There are a dozen pages of notes on this one. I’d really rather not go through every one just to find my own. Le sighs.
Bah!!! Sorry for the rant. I’m not in a terrible mood I swear!
So on to the tea.
It’s not bad, a little fake tasting, but decent enough. Another one that lists artificial ingredients now where it didn’t when I bought it (a serious pet peeve of mine! grrrrr)
It’s mint and chocolate all rolled together, though I’m not sure how much spice the peppercorns add.
For me, this must be had with milk and a dash of sugar, and really hits the spot when I’m craving it.
Overall, a great starter tea for anyone just getting into looseleaf :)

I really like the little red lips and tiny chocolate chips in this blend. Adorable! Brewed, I was a bit worried at the scent of the peppercorns. I dislike anything spicy or peppery, but luckily, they aren’t too overwhelming! The taste is smooth and sweet (not necessarily a punch of chocolate, but a nice sweetness). I really enjoy the minty finish. It’s certainly refreshing and is the best part of this blend, in my opinion (besides the little red lips, of course). Usually I don’t care for peppermint all that much, but this evening I’m definitely in the mood. Thank you so much to ladykittykat for a sample!

Received this as a free sample in an order. To be honest, I’ve given up on chocolate tea, but hey it’s a freebie might as well try it yes?

Well, so far it’s not promising. It’s steeping right now, and well, it doesn’t smell pleasant. It smells like a combo of dirt and tootsie rolls. Yum?

It’s far far worse than I thought it would be. After the first sip my immediate thought was “WHAT did I just put in my mouth?” Just to be sure, I took another. Then I dumped it down the drain and threw away the leaves.

I’m going to refrain from rating it because I think the problem is partially me. Chocolate and tea just don’t work for me. Not unless it’s a NOTE of chocolate like in Butiki’s Premium Taiwanese Assam, but actual chocolate and tea just … I don’t know. I just don’t enjoy it.

Just glad this was a sample.

This tea doesn’t get as much love from me as it should, by virtue of being super popular. I am always advocating for the underdog lol. However right now a pot of this is the perfect thing I wanted. yummmy.

So this is day 19 of the advent calendar. I own this tea, but the last time I had it, I did not enjoy it. Today I steeped it for about two minutes and put some milk in it. The result? It tasted like a hot chocolate. Yummy.

Well my order finally arrived :) this smells SO good as I’m waiting for it to cool. Deep chocolate smell with subtle hints of spicy notes and mint. The flavor is even better! It’s very smooth and creamy. Someone had mentioned it tastes like a Peppermint Patty and I agree! But it has a small spicy note to it. This might have to be one of the teas I keep around when I need a chocolate fix :)

Finished off my tin of this. It was amazing. Now I have an excuse for another order :P

This smells like After Eights’ and is one of DT’s finest works of art a staple for any connoisseur of dessert teas or people who just have good taste!

It’s certainly a staple in my black tea collection. Not an everyday tea but there must always be some in my cupboard or I am heartbroken.

Great for winter and chocolate cravings.

It’s sexy and minty sweet. One sip is all it takes to melt away the blues.

Can’t believe I’ve waited this long to sing it’s sweet praises.

This is, as they say in the description, the best chocolate/desert tea.
It tastes just like after eight chocolates. The perfect blend of chocolate and mint- one of my favorite combos! It just- is great!
Its a very dark warm wintery tea. I have only had it hot and am scared to try it iced as it may not taste good. I have just run out!!!! Yikes- like I said in my last note, I do not usually re-purchase, but I will be with this one. Maybe not right away, I will probably buy it during the winter colder season.

I’m loving this tea more and more. Perfect blend of mint and chocolate without being too intense and overpowering.

SIPDOWN!(288, soon to be higher again) also 1700th tasting note AND a thank you to gracebtlb for sending this one along in our swap. Now i’ve had this before grace sent it along but part of why i figured it would go well as my 1700th tasting note is that this is one of the first few teas that i ever tried when i started out on this journey less than a year ago. It’s nice to revisit where i started from and how far i’ve come in the teas that i’ve experienced and the flavours that i’ve come to love, hate or otherwise. This was one of my favourite teas in the beginning, but over time i’ve come to realise that other companies do similar blends that are a bit more expertly crafted than David’s Tea. It is a really nice blend though and it will always have a special place in my heart as one of the first teas i REALLY fell in love with that kicked off my crazy flavour journey :)

So thank you grace! for a walk down memory lane and a chance to revisit an old friend :) Especially since i haven’t had free time to really enjoy your other samples that i’m SUPER excited about!

Rainy day. Check. Errands to run. Check. Zombie walk in downtown Toronto. Check.

Soo what better tea to keep warm and enjoy the sights? This one! Haha yay for chocolate, minty zombie watching fun in the rain! And a sip down too! Yay for making a bit of room in my cupboard. Kinda. Since my errands involve at least one tea shop. This may be hard nt to pick up more.

So while i have to admit it IS colder here…it is NOT gloves, hat and scarf weather people! Sheesh. It is a bit of a colder, cloudier day today so I’m opting for a bit of chocolately mint for my lunch tea. Hoping it will chase away a bit of the thursday blahs

Mmm. Another cup of this for the trawl mug for on the road.

Mmmmm chocolatey goodness to kick off a booming morning! Happy Friday world! Here’s to the weekend!

Apparently this is the tea to drink for me this week. It’s been nice having this on my morning commute in to work. A slow warm wake up while travelling on the subway

Perfect tea for today’s tuesday blahs. Liquid comfort!

After Eight hot chocolate has met its match and lost… Read my lips is sooo much better that it puts the hot chocolate to shame. It’s on my shopping list now :D

having this with marshmallows right now YUM!

it’s stopped sprinkling outside for now but it’s still very cloudy… those clouds are not very friendly looking. So I’ll brew some more tea! and thanks to The Purrfect Cup for the idea about combining goodreads.com with steepster.com as it lead to me creating the Discussion goodreads.com for us to post on :D

Having a cup of this and I added marshmallows :D

with an impending rainstorm or so say the weather people… I thought a nice minty tea was in order :D

It’s threatening to thunderstorm (sigh) so what better way to stay nice and cozy than with this tea that has replaced my mint hot chocolate :D

Having a cup of this to start my morning. Tried adding some milk and it was quite good :D

A very good tea :D

Had this last night as my after dinner tea.. yummy!

Yep, this one gets top score. Chocolatey, but not overwhelmingly so. Minty, but again, not overwhelmingly so. It’s a very smooth tea and the balance of chocolate and mint is perfect. This one just screams late fall/winter to me because it’s so rich, so I try to save it for the cold months (or at least cold days). It’s my absolute favorite tea in the world.
The little chocolate chips in it melt, as do the red lips and it’s just perfect.

Since it’s a chilly 15 degrees and rainy here today, I decided to whip out this tea this afternoon. I had exactly enough left for one glass, which is fine because I’ve got another 100g on the way to get me through the winter.
I knew that I loved this tea, and I know it’s my favourite but I hadn’t had it in a few months and kind of forgot what it tasted like.

IT TASTES LIKE AFTER EIGHTS MELTED THEMSELVES INTO A CUP, THAT’S WHAT IT TASTES LIKE!

Ahem. It’s very chocolatey but also noticeably cool and minty. I like that it’s cool and minty yet the mint doesn’t push everything else out of the way. Once I smelled this steeping, the reasons that I love it all came rushing back in a hurry. I foresee myself drinking a LOT of this and Pumpkin Chai this fall and winter.

When I was taking the infuser out of the teapot, I was hit with the smell…it took me back to when I got a mint chocolate chip Lipsmackers lip balm…wow. That is exactly what this tea smells like.

And it’s kind of not a good thing, because the chocolate scent in that lip balm was so clearly artificial. It smells like chocolate but it’s just not enough like chocolate, you know? That’s how this tea tastes, at least when it cools. Straight out of the pot though it’s not bad.

I do love the cooling of the mint, and every so often I feel a little pinch of the pepper.

I’m not gonna give up on it just because it cools into what tastes like liquid lip balm. It’s too cute for that.

I did two out of curiosity cold steeps last night and this is the first of them. The candy lips definitely turn this an interesting shade of red.

I don’t recommend this method if this tea also reminds you of Lip Smackers of the past. Once I get over the smell and initial taste that reminds me so much of the Mint Choco Ship flavor I had when I was 8 or 9. After that though, this is pretty tasty.

Definitely not something I would have ever thought to cold steep before. I think the chocolate seems more pronounced this way.

Okay I just left this steeping for far longer than intended..and it actually made me like it a lot more. It still has that weird, artificial scent but it tastes way more chocolatey after that long steep. It was probably around 8 minutes before I remembered it was steeping. I was expecting it to have gotten bitter but it was all good!

Though the distraction…I was talking on the phone to my mom about tea (because I never shut up about tea) she didn’t believe me that tea could have a creamy taste without milk. Oh boy when she come back to visit is she going to be in for more tea than she wants.

It might require hiding half of what I have.

Wowzer, this is perfection in a cup! I woke up this morning and was craving something sweet and I have been saving this tea just for that moment. I opened up the pouch and it smells just like a york peppermint pattie, I love those things! The tea is so pretty and I love the little mint lips, I am such a sucker for unique items in my tea.

After the steep the color was a very nice orangey orange color. The smell was bit more faint and you can smell the black tea after the brew. First sip mmmmmm!

This tea is sweet, the blend of vanilla and mint and hints of chocolate is so good. It really tastes like a peppermint patty, maybe just a bit sweeter but wow what a fatastic dessert tea. I loved how fresh my mouth felt after drinking this tea, just perfect! I will definetely have to buy more of this!

This was in my 25 Days of Tea calendar but I never tried it as I am not into mint teas. Or, really, mint anything. I can’t do mint and chocolate candies/cookies, and I dislike peppermint tea.

But then I tried Santa’s Secret and loved it. This smelled great in its mini-tin, so I thought maybe I was changing my ways and should give it a shot.

Unfortunately not. This mostly tastes like peppermint herbal tea to me. I do taste the chocolate, but I guess my strong opinion on peppermint kind of overrides it and I don’t much notice it. I also don’t taste the black tea. Oh well. I’m glad I got to try it without buying a baggie. I don’t know what it was about Santa’s Secret that had me liking the mint; maybe the creamy/candy quality makes it agreeable.

Full disclosure: I probably didn’t put enough tea in, quite a lot of it escaped my steeping ball, and I was distracted, so didn’t get to the tea until it was very much too cold.
BUT:
The smell of this tea is otherworldly. It’s like I’m in a beautiful dream where everything is made of ice cream. There’s the SLIGHTEST black tea tinge to it, but it’s mostly: chocolate, chocolate, chocolate; mint, mint, mint. Not that I’m complaining. This is a lovely situation! The tea itself looks a little weak, and the chocolate chips leave a rather unsightly brown ring around my coffee cup. But, again, it’s not THAT big a deal. It’s the kind of ring I’d stick my tongue into my mug for when nobody was looking, and lick it off. Because you KNOW that it’s chocolate.
I suppose I was whelmed by the flavour. I’d wanted a bit more knock-your-socks-off mintiness. And I could barely taste tea at all.
Milk and sugar as usual.
I’ll try it again when I can focus on it.
I can see this tea being brilliant on Christmas morning (maybe with a splish of some minty alcohol) and in the days leading up to Christmas, but — like Starbucks’ Peppermint Mocha — I can see it getting old once the red and green and gold of Christmas have faded into the blue and white and grey of late winter.
Maybe it would be good as an iced milky summer treat, though. As a milky ice-pop, perhaps?
We’ll see.

I admit, I was a little hesitant about this intially — Peppercorns? With chocolate and mint? But I am always willing to try something once!
I actually really enjoy this tea. I find chocolate teas usually fall short of expectation, but this one has a full body flavor with a sweet mint finish. The aroma of the tea leaves seem sweet, but the steeped leaves more accurately reflects the minty flavor. There does seem to be a slight film that collects on the top when the tea begins to cool, but it doesn’t affect the flavor.
Plus the minature lip candies are cute!

I was so surprised by this delicious chocolate tea. Usually when things are chocolate flavored its not very good. However i was amazed that this tea was chocolate flavored but it wasn’t yucky. I love the little red lips in the mix. so cute and delicious!

Another sensational tea from DAVIDsTEA. Everything that I got from DT has been very enjoyable. This cute little tea with the red lips and chocolatey goodness. I used cream with this one and it really complimented the creaminess of the chocolate and minty flavor.

First christmas tea out of the “sweet indulgences” set :D

(Even if I hadn’t wrapped this present, I’d still have smelled it a mile away!)

Anyway, I was barely conscious but this was nice! I’d say 80, but I’m waiting til next cup. K had some with me.

K & I finished off the last bit of this. So good! Not something I’d want often, but I’ll probably get it again sometime.
