Oh Canada

Rooibos Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Looking for a taste of Canada? Try this red rooibos tea. It’s sweetened with (what else?) maple syrup and sprinkled with delicious maple leaf candies. Plus it’s 100% diplomatic (well, caffeine-free) and tastes great in both our official languages. With green rooibos, honeybush, caramel and toffee bits to shake things up. A truly authentic Canadian experience.

Ingredients:
South African green and red rooibos, honeybush, caramel bits , toffee bits , candy leaves, artificial and natural flavouring.
Allergens: Dairy, soy and tree nuts

I got this in a swap and there was only enough for a small mug.
The dry notes are deliciously maple scented. As it steeps I can smell maple and rooibos, I feared I would not like this because of the rooibos. And frankly I would jot he Canadian if i couldnt enjoy a tea that is our name sake.
So I’m guessing because its a blend of rooibos and honeybush I actually enjoy this, although I find it way too light. I think this is because of the lack of leaves. I do get a light taste of maple, but that could be from the syrop I added.
Puke Buttered rum I won’t give it a numerical rating until I can use the right amount of leaves.

Time for dessert! I finally got my order in from David’s Tea. This tea smells fantaaaaaaastic. Mapley mapley goodness, plus adorable little maple leaf sprinkles and chunks of caramel and toffee. I love tea that’s tasty and fun.

When I visited Canada with my French class way back in high school we visited a maple syrup shop/diner where before dinner they (jokingly) told us to try maple syrup on everything. I did (and I mean everything) and never looked back.

The maple carries into the steeped tea with notes of caramel. The rooibos isn’t overpowering, the maple really stands out (which is what I was hoping for!) but doesn’t punch you in the face. This is super yummy and I can’t wait to try it iced with a bit of sugar added.

Edit:
Successful second steep, less maple this time and more rooibos. Still has that rich sweetness from the toffee and caramel though.

So, how do you order from David’s Tea and not get the one named “Oh, Canada”? I didn’t know how, so of course it goes in my cart.

I’m actually a fan of rooibos blends (okay, I’ll admit, I’m a fan of just about anything that you steep in hot water and drink), so I was really excited to try this one. I’m always on the lookout for rooibos/honeybush/herbal blends that are awesome.

So, the scent of this tea has me nervous. Want to know what it smells like? Do you have a bottle of real maple syrup handy? Open it and sniff. That is what this tea smells like. Exactly what this tea smells like. Sweet, maply syrup. It smells so overwhelmingly sweet that I was very concerned about the first sip…

But I shouldn’t have been!! Yes, it tastes like maple syrup, but it’s not syrupy-sweet. In fact, it’s got a bitter-burnt-bakey edge to it that makes me think of pancakes flavored with maple syrup. Oh, Canada…you are a fine tea indeed.

ETA: Second steep is a bit weaker than the first, but by no means has it diminished in flavor. In fact, it might be better.

So I received this one in a swap a long time ago…I just have not had the chance to review it. I’m still getting my palate for rooibos teas but this one is pretty stinkin’ good. Woodsy maple syrup. This is a decaf that I would add to the permanent collection. I even used the rest of the leaves mixed coffee. Fantastic!

Yummy… just received my first Davids Tea order (received my order in 1 week) Because it is late in the day I decided to make this one first (I am saddened that I will have to wait to try the yummy black teas for a few days I have to be at the hospital first thing tomorrow for surgery and can have NOTHING :( to drink after midnight) yuck! But it will help knowing when I return home I will have lots of yummy new teas to choose. OK enough about why I chose this one first… YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM this smells just like the maple syrup my in laws just brought back for us from their visit to Canada the other month. OMG it tastes like a tea version of maple syrup but not too sweet. I really like this. In the past I cringed at rooibos but have found a few that I really enjoy! I so want to try the Buttered Rum tea but really need sleep tonight… maybe just a small cuppa??!!!

I love the flavor of maple – and I’ve been wanting to try a maple flavored tea for a long time. I figured a Canadian company would probably know what they were doing as far as maple was concerned, so I went ahead and added this to my order.

The smell of this one dry did make me hesitant, at first. There was definitely maple there, but also something else that didn’t quite fit. That weird chemical note that seems to appear more often than not in the dry leaf scent of their blends. I’ve learned by now that once it steeps that fake smell disappears, so I hoped it would be the case with this one too.

Steep notes: 1.75 tsp. leaf, 10 oz. water, no additives, below parameters.

Once steeped that chemical smell does go away- leaving what looks and smells like pancake syrup – YUM! And even more awesome, this TASTES like maple syrup! There is a definite sweetness and even a kind of buttery note that makes me want to pour this over a stack of pancakes and eat it. Seriously WOW.

I didn’t really get any hints of rooibos in the tisane itself, but then I did kind of suck this down fast because it was SO GOOD. It does definitely make me want pancakes or waffles or something breakfasty and sweet.

I will definitely be keeping some of this on hand!

Thanks Finn88!
I ruined it! The tasting notes for this tea was at 123 :P Anyways, if it weren’t for this swap I probably would have never tried a maple tea. Hmm this tea is very sweet. I am getting caramel and maple. Someone mentioned that it tasted like a maple bar doughnut and that’s exactly what it made me think of! I didn’t think I’d like this tea as much as I do because I’m not a huge fan of maple flavored things. But the rooibos was a really nice base for this tea. All of the flavors mix so nicely :] Thanks again!!

At the risk of being tossed right off this board…

Prior to drinking this, I thought the Organic Grapefruit from London Tea Room was the worst tea I’d ever had. This topped that.

This smelled absolutely incredible in the bag. Yummy maple aroma wafting out of the bag. I was so excited I could hardly contain myself. I love maple. I love rooibos. Then I steeped it. I promise this isn’t hyperbole: this tea steeped smells like a house with too many cats. It tasted as awful as it smelled.

I’ll be sending an email to DavidsTea. Yuk.

NOTE: Removing my terrible, 1-point rating. We’ll see if the sample works out and I just got a bad batch.

When I visited a sugarbush (which didn’t yet have any maple syrup!) a couple weekends ago, I realized I hadn’t tried Oh Canada. What was with that? I have tried most or all of the flavoured DT teas that appeal to me, so I knew I had to get on this.

Opening the bag is just like opening a bottle of maple syrup. Same scent, same colour. Although there are candies. As wonderful as maple syrup is, it doesn’t have colourful candies. I would like to be ashamed of getting excited at candies in tea, but why wouldn’t something like a maple-flavoured rooibos have candies?

Anyway, I deeply and sincerely love maple syrup. But, it’s not exactly compatible with my attempted lowish-carb diet. I have some artifically sweetened maple(-flavoured?) syrup, but I have to try pretty hard to convince myself it’s anywhere close to the real thing. This tea does taste seriously mapley, so it’s great to have in my arsenal of craving-killing teas. I’ll need to get more than the small amount I picked up, as I’ve already had three cups of it. I prefer it with a little milk, I think, but definitely feel no need to sweeten it. I also clearly need to use this the next time I make pancakes!

I just finished my huge Libre of this, and it had been in there steeping for over an hour. I think it is best this way! Delicious.

I got this in a swap…although I am not sure who sent it. (SORRY, but THANK YOU, etc. etc.)

I tried it 1.5 tsp/cup, boil, 5 minute steep and it was somewhat week. I LOVE maple and am going to give it another try. I want to get the MAPLE!!! flavor that other tasters found. I am not going to rate until I give it a chance…Does anyone else have any good steeping parameters for this one?

Had a cup of this tonight to celebrate my residency. I made syrup out of it a while back for use on pancakes, so my association with it is a super sweet syrup, so I don’t reach of it often. It’s sweet, yes, but not overly so…it’s delicious. I love this one.

This was one of the two teas of the day for today, and when I stopped in this morning, this was the only one they had ready, so I snagged two tumblers of it. You see, when the iced tea promotion started, it was a day when the office was wretchedly home 30-40 degrees C, and I had forgotten any kind of drink at home. So when I went on a tea run, I bought two of the iced tea promo tumblers to get me through the day. Now I keep them at the office. I’ve almost made friends with a couple of my coworkers and let them know that they’re welcome to use them as long as they wash them when they’re done, so these suckers have seen a lot of mileage already, and they’re not even a week old!

Anyhoo, I had this without any kind of sweetner and it wasn’t bad! I did find myself craving something sweet in it, but that’s okay. It was still a cup full of mapley goodness on its own. Definitely one I would return to.

This is the first of my samples from a swap with ladykittycat. Thank you so much for sending me my first try of David’s Tea!

This is really a good one. Somehow, maple and rooibos are the perfect pairing. I am not a huge fan of rooibos, either, but this works very well for me! It is going on the list for sure.

10 minute resteep…not quite as good as the first, but still good.

Tea of the evening courtesy of Uniquity…..

While I am not a huge fan of rooibos at this point, this one is pretty good. The maple flavor goes very well with the base. It is definitely an enjoyable evening treat.

Steeped for 8 minutes by the usual volume and temp.

So I got this treat in the mail today from jessiwrites :)

And hello maple! The medicinal taste is definitely lessened, I’m thinking from the from the sheer amount of caramel and toffee that must be in here. This one is up there for the rooibos’ I’ve tried thus far. Whenever that medicinal taste is diminished I have hope.

I’m going to try a second steep to see if it’ll will be better for me. Thanks again jessiwrites for the tea and the second steep tip!

I like this tea! It’s so warm and maple-y flavoured. I enjoy the toffee flavours coming out and I love that it’s got some green rooibos base to it. Maybe I’m crazy or alone in feeling this way, but I love me some green rooibos and I feel it isn’t capitalized the way it should!

Anyway, I love it. And I know this is probably terrible to say… but I seriously think that this would taste really good with milk! I dunno, but it sounds good to me.. maybe next time… :)

Yummy! A friend gave me some of this to try, and it really does taste like maple syrup. The color is quite pretty as well, and I like watching the cute little maple sprinkles :)

This rooibos is fantastic. It has this great maple syrup aroma and a sweet backtaste without being sugary. The smell of this tea could fill up a house with a magnificant smell that catches the attention of everyone. I reccomend this tea to be served not too hot, but not too cold.

BIRTHDAY TEA :) !!!!
Ahhhh nothing like the feeling of waking up the day of your 17th birthday and enjoying an incredible aromatic rooibos like this one! LOVE LOVE LOVE :D

So today was evidently maple day on steepster? so many maple tea notes today. I decided I was gonna grab a cup of Oh Canada again. Did I ever tell you how much I like this mix? Oh yeah, like four times. I’m serious though, it gets better everytime….
Maple and tea go well like peanut butter and jelly. Speaking of peanut butter and jelly…. YUMMMM, Im in that sort of mood now. Comfort food friday!
Anyone daring enough to make peanut butter and jelly tea? I think it would be awesome. If it doesn’t already exist. it might becauseb theres so many smart tea people out there.
oh where was I? MAPLE TEA IS AWESOME!

I bought a tin of this tea as I like it a lot, and surprisingly every cup produces a flavor that grows on me everytime. This is a maple tea so I had the genius idea of having pancakes and maple syrup this morning, with nothing else but a nice hot cup of OH CANADA!
What can I say, the contrast of flavors between the hot tea and the pancakes was fun and intriguing. If your Canadian ( Like me ), be patriotical and drink OH CANADA, and watch hockey ( because hockey is an awesome sport, go habs go ).

Drank this one again this morning. Aaahh So goood. I love Oh Canada. Maybe thats because I’m canadian but its good!

Ok, back to reviewing my David’s Tea Samples…Maybe about 1 a week? Hmm maybe that’ll help me in maintaining not buying any tea til March/April? LOL.

On the plus side: I have found a tea that that doesn’t have that Graham Cracker taste. (Well a slight undertone.) But covering that is a strong maple syrup taste. Now if your expecting/wanting a heavy syrup taste: Do not get this tea! But if your looking for the sweetness of syrup but none of the sticky heavy mess, definitely buy it. That being said…though I don’t mind the idea of finishing this, I doubt I will buy this tea. I couldn’t really say what turned me off from it….the temp suggestion is 208, and so I usually just go for the boiling and most 208 teas taste ok/good with that, but I think next time I will try the 200 setting. I am not counting on the taste really improving though. Ahh well:)

So, I put two and a bit perfect spoonfuls of this into my steeper. Filled it with water. added some sugar. And set it down on a spoon or something.
After I was done cleaning an entire pot of this off my counter, cleaning my steeper out (it had been long enough that all the naughty things had dissolved and ended up on the counter. A resteep would have been just rooibos. I filled it again, set it down and let it steep. Blended it about 3/5 tea, 2/5 hot vanilla almond milk. AMAZING. Added a sizable lump of brown sugar. (cuz in my house brown sugar comes in rock hard lumps)

I was very surprised by this tea
I got it in one of two sampler packs from David’stea a couple days ago and this probably the best one so far
Im not a big fan of hot teas on hot mornings so I brewed it up as an iced latte and boy o boy was it ever good
It’s a nice roobois and the maple syrup really brings out the sweetness in it but I still added a little bit of agave but that may just be personal preference
In all a Sickkkk tea I would buy and recommend to everyone
