Oh Canada

Rooibos Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Looking for a taste of Canada? Try this red rooibos tea. It’s sweetened with (what else?) maple syrup and sprinkled with delicious maple leaf candies. Plus it’s 100% diplomatic (well, caffeine-free) and tastes great in both our official languages. With green rooibos, honeybush, caramel and toffee bits to shake things up. A truly authentic Canadian experience.

Ingredients:
South African green and red rooibos, honeybush, caramel bits , toffee bits , candy leaves, artificial and natural flavouring.
Allergens: Dairy, soy and tree nuts

This tea is the very essence of everything stereotypical about Canada…. in the best ways. This smells and tastes like the liquid form of pancake breakfasts in Calgary during the Stampede. It’s thick without being heavy and lovely right after waking up in the morning. The after taste is distinctly of maple syrup. The best part about this tea is that while it sounds like it would be overwhelming sweet, it’s not at all. It’s just the right side of warm and sugary. The perfect tea to send out into the world to represent the loveliness of Canada.

Backlogging (so, based almost entirely on my notes)

Experience buying from @Ashley: I bought this tea from Ashley when she was selling all of her tea. I received the tea quickly through the mail and my package was filled with many surprises. Thank you Ashley!

Appearance and aroma of dry leaf: Decorative: tiny colorful candy-like stars mixed in with rooibos; very aromatic, very good!

Brewing guidelines: I used a metal basket strainer inside a ceramic 16 oz. cup, such that I put a lid over the top to keep the heat in. Cup was warmed before steeping. Stevia added.
…………….1st: two minutes off boiling (heated cup); 2’
…………….2nd: near boiling (heated); 4’
…………….3rd: boiling (heated); 6’
…………….4th: boiling (heated); 10’

Flavor: Great! It had good flavor right through the forth steeping.

Overall: I have very few notes about this tea, but I do remember really liking the taste and the aroma. I would be happy to try this tea again!

I expected to love this tea. I wanted to love it!! and… I love Canada… but well, I do not love this tea, though not for lack of it being well put together.
It does taste like maple syrup, and not in an overwhelming way but that, and rooibos is about all I get out of it. I find the creme brule much more satisfying somehow. Lighter and less abrasive in the back of my throat. It’s almost like drinking maple syrup! only diluted, about ten times.
Oh well!

I’m not a huge fan of maple, but I ended up with 100g of this. I steeped to the half-way point (I don’t love maple but I also hate bland tea), and added two drops of milk. It tastes like a maple dip from THortons, I’m actually liking it a lot more than I thought I would. Still don’t know if I would drink it all of the time, though.

I just had to get this tea when I saw the name because i do live in Canada. Yay Canada. I love the maple in this tea. I live near a sugar bush so every time i drink this tea, it makes me more excited for the maple season.

Hum…this tea is different. It’s really mapley. Good but I initially made it too sweet. Have to be careful. Think I want to drink this with breakfast…bacon and eggs and maple tea sounds good. Love the name. Would be fabulous steeped a long time and added into a desert recipe as a water replacement…might cook some squash in some and see what happens.

Second Review. Playing with Tea.
Today I’ve been in a playful experimental mood. This is not an infrequent state of being for me. Usually I whip up a new dish in the kitchen…and now and then I create a tea infused recipe like hibiscus tea honey or earl grey vanilla pudding. Tonight I was cold! With the temperature dropping from 81 at 5pm yesterday to 34 at 9pm tonight…I wanted some non-caffeine tea that tasted good to warm me up! The gears began turning. Ah, I have this Oh Canada tea but it’s a little too sweet for me. Maybe it’s too maple for tonight. What will I do? Light-bulb! Bing!
I went hurridly to my Spice Cupboard…picked out my Cube brand Applewood Smoked Salt (really good) then went to my Tea Cupboard and pulled down the Black Tea/Lapsang Souchong box picking out the Lapsang Souchong. Now ready for action, I was set to steep a pot of Oh Canada adding a small pinch of Lapsang Souchong and another pinch of Applewood Smoked Salt to the brew basket!
Steeping done, I poured the brew into my mug, added some sweetening (I’ve had this tea before and knew that even though there is lots of maple flavor, adding sweetening brightens the flavor) and took a big sip. This is a winner! Not too strong but just right! The slight salty smokiness really brings a fabulous sense of campfire pancake breakfast with syrup feeling to this tea that I find is better than the 52 tea’s version of pancakes. (I know that sounds conceited…but this has more smoke so I mean it at least for me!).
Try mixing this recipe if you have this tea!

I love Canada. I mean my favorite hockey team is the Canadiens. When I tell people I like hockey and Formula 1 they think I am Canadian (although really that always seemed more Finnish to me? And it was only after I said F1 that the Canadian question came up, surprisingly.) So when I first found out about this tea I knew I had to get some. I decided to blow all my birthday money on a big order and it came today and I immediately had to make Oh Canada right out of the box.

Let’s see, how many ways could this become my favorite tea (and make me start saying favourite)? I love rooibos, I love sprinkles, I love maple syrup, I love caramel.

And yes, I do love this. It’s sweet, but not cloying. It’s not something I would drink everyday and definitely not something I will drink at 5:30pm again anytime soon.

It tastes like maple syrup more than anything. I get a bit of caramel, but most of all I get a need to take another sip each time I stop. This tea and I are going to get along very well.

Dear Steepster,
I messed up terribly. Especially with money. Because of tea, most likely. Okay, for sure. So I need to ignore you for a long, long time. Badly.

If we’ve started talking a swap, we’ll still complete it. I’ll still be here for the tea boxes, those I for sure can’t ignore or leave. I missed a credit card payment. Twice. I barely have money as is because I don’t work, and I also just messed up school and at this point I don’t even know if I can keep going, which is an even bigger problem for money.

I’m working on applying to stuff, it’s kind of hard when you have an ear infection.

update if you were interested in buying tea Anyway, all the tea I had to swap, I put it here to sell: I figure it makes more sense than an auction first (thanks for the idea CJ). http://twominutesforbaking.net/2013/05/21/tea-for-sale/ I’ll be home all day so I can keep an eye on it and I’ll go now to look through the rest of my stuff so it’s all posted there.

Also if you ever wanted to buy stuff from my etsy shop I’d really appreciate it right now.

So after feeling like a total miserable fool I thought I needed something sweet, something I’ve loved, yet I’ve ignored in the midst of all this tea. I can’t believe how long it’s been since this one has seen the outside of the cabinet.

In that time though I have come to dislike rooibos a bit. Ok, a lot. While it smells good in the bag, brewed up it has the rooibos scent of taste bud death. I think it’s lost that mapley goodness. Though I do have some maple granules I could add to bring it back. I don’t have much of this left so that will do.

So that’s about it, I’ll miss you, but I need to get off the path of self-destruction.

xoxo,
momo

OH CANA-DRAMA!

So apparently my favorite hockey team is run by drama queens who took a player out MID-GAME AND SENT HIM OFF because they traded him. So to enjoy all the ridiculous rumors right now, like he’s going to 3 different teams, I figured this was a fitting tea as they are the Canadiens.

This is still super tasty, and somewhat of a soothing thing to drink so you do not blow up at people on the internets because you are too busy being like “it’s like drinking maple syrup!” to be mad. Now if only I could give it to people through the internet so they calm down…

I want to declare this my most favorite (or should I say favourite?) tea now. When I need more of it, I am so getting the giant bag+tin.

I just love to steep this as long as possible so all the leaf candies melt. It’s so sweet, maple and caramel are like my two favorite forms of sugars so that is why I love this tea so much.

This is the first tea I tried from the array of samples sent to me by DaisyChubb. I haven’t had a good history with rooibus, but this one was alright. It tastes very maple-y and sweet. I kept thinking I should be having pancakes outdoors with a hot cup of this. The little maple sprinkles were really cute! I like it. Of course there’s still that rooibus (medicinal) flavor that I’m not in love with, but maybe we’ll get there one day. Things are looking up!
Nothing beats real tea, but this rooibus is really pleasant!

Thank you for sending this DaisyChubb. :)

First time trying this tea and my first impression is it smells like campfire with a hint of maple behind it. Loose in the bag it looks very cute with the little maple leafs. once steeped it takes on the color of maple syrup which is kind of neat and the smells is increased 10 fold! the taste is pleasant, I might add some sugar to this as it’s not as sweet as expected but believe it or not i can feel the maple syrup in the back of my throat! All around good tea, I guess I do like Rooibos tea after all! I don think i would but a whole 100g tin of this but I might spring for another bag come sugar shack time and sweeten it with real maple syrup!

Received this in a swap from tattooed_tea.

The maple scent is very strong both before and after brewing, but is surprisingly less prominent in the taste. The flavor tastes very natural and is not overly sweet. This is a good option for anyone looking for a maple tea that doesn’t taste like you’re drinking syrup straight from the tree.

Steeped a second time for 10 minutes, and the results were equally as delicious.

Overall, I found this to be very similar to Della Terra’s Autumn Leaves, but not as sweet.

I’m one of those proud Canadians – I had to try this tea!

Smelling the leaves – it gives a barky-tree maple scent without the sweet – real maple, not that pancake syrup crap. The 3 colours of maple leaves add a nice cuteness to the tea.

Now, made as a straight tea is nice, a slightly sweet maple tea with woodsyness and rooibos.

BUT.. if you want the ultimate Oh Canada (maple conspiracy) make it a latte (I made with straight soymilk, boiling the tea for about 5 mins) with a bit of brown sugar and holy cow! It’s wonderful! Mapley, smooth, sweet, hint of woodsyness! It’s Canadian comfort tea (maybe add a couple slices of bacon to take it over the edge, OH MAN!)
I totally chugged it down and was sad when I realized I drank it all. Now I want another one, but I’m cut off for the evening.

sipdown of Oh Canada

I will miss you Oh Canada and your strong maple flavor! I made the last of my tea as a latte with honey. Super maple!
Oh, I ran out of honey and asked my husband to buy some. He came home with 5lb container of it!

Tea to go today, and good thing. It smells good, amazing even, but tastes too rooibos-y for my liking. It’s not bad. I even had it unsweetened, with only some milk, and it was sweet enough (barely) for me. If I had to cut out all the caffeine in tea, I might go for this one, but I’d probably reach for Alpine Punch or Amaretto first.

Oh. My. Sweet. Freaking. Awesome. This is fantastic, and you need to get some now. (DAVIDsTEA just made shipping to the US cheaper, so all the more reason to do so.) The wee maple leaf candies are a visua treat as you open up the bag and survey the terrain of deliciousness. The sweet, cozy aroma of maple and toasted marshmallow swirled around me as soon as I had torn the heat seal on the bag…then POW. Yum. It was very, very difficult to wait until this cooled off to drink, but it’s good practice to delay gratification. And the taste: smooth, nice earthy rooibos, and then a big soft mapley-toasted marshmallowy finish that caresses your whole mouth and throat. It quite literally makes me want to sing. My favorite teas have finishes that last for long stretches between sips, like Teavana’s Honeybush Vanilla and Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearls. And you know what? This is my new favorite tea. Man, if this isn’t the tastiest rooibos I’ve ever had…and I love rooibos.

So…good…this is the coziest, yummiest thing in the world.

This was my “tea to go” today, myself and two other co-workers piled into my car for a trip to DAVIDs for a between shift purusal… uh-oh, 3 women in a tea shop is like a bunch of kids in a candy store screaming for the attentions of the one person behind the counter. But I must say she was calm cool and collected!

When I first sniffed these maple infused leaves I was hit in the face with so much syrup I worried that it would come off tasting like a D grade maple syrup, but I decided to take the plunge and who knew this would be so delightful?! Drinking it hot reminds me of winters huddled around troughs filled with snow eagerly holding that precious popcicle stick, breathing in the scent of fresh snow, fresh tapped trees adn boiling maple syrup and waiting, WAITING for that sticky boiled goodness to be poured over the snow so you can wrap your stick in it and stand cheeks rosey and toes frozen as you savour that maple goodness that makes Canada Great!

This is a great tea and my first Rooibos that will leave me looking for more on pancake and french toast Sundays!

There is not a lot of this tea left. I wish DAVID’s offered tins that held just 50g, because this one is a once in a while dessert tea the large 100g tins makes this tea seem daunting. Does that make sense? I like this tea, but just in small, small doses…

Smells just like maple syrup when steeped. This is a good caffeine-free alternative when I’m craving a maple tea. But – based purely on maple taste alone – I prefer the Maple Pecan Oolong from Butiki, as I think the flavor is stronger there.

That said, this is still quite yummy. It tastes pretty much exactly as one would suspect: like a rooibus tea mixed with maple syrup.

Grrr… Steepster hiccuped and I lost my post! Let’s try this again…

Sipdown! I’m trying diligently to finish up as many teas as I can, as I have an order on the way and a bunch of new teas from recent swaps that I haven’t added to my cupboard yet. If I’m feeling overwhelmed at around 50, I can’t even imagine how those of you up near 200 manage it!

Ok, this is a good cup for when you’re looking for something sweet and caffeine-free. I like it, but it’s not something I’m likely to restock as I prefer Birthday Cake, and that fills the sweet rooibos void quite nicely for me. Not much to say about this one that I didn’t already put in my previous tasting note.

I’m in love with this tea. Iced or hot. Whenever. However. So much maple and sweetness, but not too sweet. It’s just perfect! <3

Oh Canada has the prefect amount of maple. Not too sweet but enough to still taste the maple. For some reason the after taste reminds me of molasses…This is my first tea containing green rooibos and I have to say I like it. This tea has a nice nutty flavour that goes awesome with the maple. A great tea to satisfy any sweet tooth.

K liked this a fair bit more than me! I liked it, but I’m always a BIT disappointed by maple flavours. Mostly this reminded us of the maple whiskey that K bought.. so we added a shot :P and that was pretty good, too! Lovely to have with an apple crisp! ;) Won’t buy more of this one, but it was nice to sample. :D

Oh Canada! This is my little cup of patriotism.

This Rooibos infusion is heavily spiked with Maple everything, again another infusion for those on the caffeine free kick, doesn’t hurt if you are craving something sweet too.

Dry this tea looks kind of like a bunch of little twigs or something, was my first Rooibos so I am assuming its just the type of plant. Weird looks aside it had a powerful maple smell that I fell in love with. Since I was a kid I was always a sucker for Maple, especially those Maple Cookies.

The final brew is golden brown, maybe even slightly reddish. It has a strong maple aroma to it, one could easily confuse it with maple syrup, heck if it was a bit thicker it would be great on waffles!
