Caravan Earl Grey (Pu-Erh)

Pu-erh Tea by DAVIDsTEA

From Website:
“On the road
Back in the 1800s, when the original Earl Grey was still working parties as a diplomat in China, all pu’erh tea was brought by horses in long caravans from Yunnan Province. It was believed to protect the heart, fight fat and increase longevity. This special-edition blend combines the deep taste of pu’erh with the Earl’s trademark bergamot as well as a hint of sweet white peony tea.”

Thank you so much for sending this as part of that swap, ladykittykat. I may have to make this a permanent part of my tea cupboard if every cup is anywhere as wonderful as the two infusions I got from this this morning.

I completely forgot that this was the one that had the pu-erh/white peony base, so I spent most of my usual morning cup going “Hmm, what is that?” The bergmot is so much more delicate in this tea than I’m used to. Very little bitterness in either infusion, but nothing too sweet either. Very smooth and wet if that makes any sense. There wasn’t the same sort of astringency I’m used to even in a weak black tea.

The second infusion was steeped for six minutes, and there was very little difference in taste for me. Very yummy for both cups. Definitely will be thinking about putting this in the regular cupboard. Might have to do a taste testing to decide.

I forgot just how good this was first thing in the morning.

Ladykittykatt sent me my first sample as part of a trade, and I have enjoyed this so much, I’m going to have to put in a rather large order at David’s Tea at the beginning of the month for this and Pink Flamingo.

Right now, I’m going to see how many steeps I can get from this last teaspoon.

This was such a yummy morning. I had rasin bread and this to look forward to. I can’t help loving this a little more everytime I drink it. The bergamot is balanced so well by the pu-erh.

I must have ALL THE EARL GREYS. Cream of, Garden, Lady, etc. I was really excited to try this pu’erh version of it from DT, and it totally pulled through. The bergamot and other flavours were very bright and crisp over the pu’erh base. I really enjoyed my cup, a bit more than I do a standard black Earl Grey, but it left my mouth feeling a little dry. No bad aftertaste, just dry. Definitely going back for another cup.

I think I’m addicted to Earl Greys. This one is particularly tasty because the pu’erh gives it its own earthy flavour, and the peony tea sweetens and lightens it up. I’m not feeling any of the dry-mouth thing that I had last time. This is the perfect cup of tea for the morning. Tasty, invigorating, not overly fruity or floral. Yum.
