Buttered Rum (organic)

Black Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Yo ho ho-conut

Hot buttered rum is so delicious we want it all day long. Unfortunately, most employers frown on workplace drunkenness, so we came up with this rich and creamy alternative. Toasted coconut and vanilla beans mingle with black tea in a caramelized caress of flavours. Decadent hot or iced, it also blends perfectly with dark rum, brown sugar and a dash of milk – so go ahead and indulge your inner pirate, off the clock.

Ingredients: Black tea, coconut flakes, vanilla beans, cornflower petals. With organic and natural flavouring.

Allergens: Coconut

Breakfast tea this morning! Not overly sweet (phew!) & such a great scent. I think I’m gonna sadface when I run out of this sample.

Had been looking forward to another cup of this since I had that first one.

Ohhhh me loves this tea. It’s so creamy and buttery and rummy and good. I added some sweetener and a splash of milk, and it just added to the creamy goodness and I think it brought out the commute for me. Nom nom. Will have to add some rum sometime soon! This could be trouble! :)

This is my first tea review. The first day of the 24 days of (David’s Tea) seemed a good place to start.

I’m not great with black teas, they’re usually not my thing, but this is different. The dry smell is incredible, it’s definitely buttery. The taste is very smooth, I think thanks to the coconut, it was definitely less bitter than I usually find black tea. The second steep lost all bitterness completely.

Next time I drink this tea I will add almond milk and a touch of sugar to the first steep and enjoy the second steep straight.

I steeped this for 5 minutes and got a really weak flavor. Definitely going to use more next time. What little flavor I could taste was yummy however. I’ve yet to be disappointed with DAVIDsTEA( I have only had about three though lol).

When I was steeping this, some scents in the leaves blended together to make a slight (sorry for being gross!) vomity smell. It’s not there in the dry leaves, nor in the tea itself. I’m not sure what it is, but it seems to be a mixture of something that just doesn’t mesh well together. It definitely doesn’t taste this way! Has anyone else smelt this or am I just weird?

I’m home for the Easter weekend and I found a wonderful little four cup teapot today for a great price. I can’t wait to knit a cozy for it :D

Anyway, I made this and definitely got to taste some of the creamy, rummy deliciousness I see everyone else talking about. And then suddenly, the horrible salty taste of San Angelo water overpowered everything else. I couldn’t even finish the poor cup. I’ll have my Brita filter pitcher over the summer at least. Hopefully that will help. And if not, I guess I’ll just stock up on water from the store :(

Finally, after months of seeing this tea mentioned all over Steepster, I have finally gotten my hands on some. And, thankfully, this is quite a way to end a work day/week.

The scent of deeply buttery rum is very present once you open this tea. The mixture of vanilla and coconut is something to experience firsthand, the smell is extremely buttery, no matter how faint it is.

But once you’re steeping, the scent grows stronger and stronger. In fact, after the first 30 seconds, I had grown impatient to waiting for the tea to brew, as I really wanted to taste it immediately. Very decadent, and maintains such an extremely buttery texture, your nostrils will thank you the rest of the day.

The flavor does not disappoint as well, making the wait worth it. Such a perfect blend of vanilla and coconut with black tea gives an impossibly creamy brew that completely satisfies.

Even immediately after opening the canister, and all the time brewing and enjoying, I can’t believe how long it took me to finally buy this wonderful tea.

I’m glad I decided to only buy a bag of about 50g of this tea. As much as I had initially loved this, it has eventually become pale and not very buttery at all.

The leaves’ aroma still gives off the impression that this will be a very creamy and full flavored black tea, but comes off flat, unnecessarily bitter and just not close to it’s description at all.

The fact that this tea will only be half as buttery with an equal or more amount of sugar added doesn’t help. As much as I love a sweetened tea, straight tea is better. But, if required, the less sugar the better.

It’s quite unfortunate, as it still seems nothing can and will compare to the holiest of holies, Teavana’s Almond Biscotti.

I tend to make it into the office every morning earlier than expected. Usually, co-workers arrive roughly around 9 AM, where I make it in at 8:30, sometimes even earlier. One of the great things about arriving early is having extra time to properly make tea.

I’ve been drinking this tea early in mornings since I bought the 50 gram tin, and early on I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Well, this is the last of the buttered rum tea.

The scent of the leaves whenever you open the tin is impeccably buttery, it never seems to go away opened, scooped, steeped or consumed.

The handsomely deep red tone is a great touch, contributing to it’s early evening rum appearance rather than giving an early morning pick-me-up face.

It is unfortunate that the flavor has become less consistent. At first, it had burst with sweet buttery goodness, the coconut and vanilla giving a feisty Caribbean feel. As the months wore on, so did the butter, fading to a paler and darker flavor, which I would probably credit the cornflower petals.

Believe me, it is still much better than Teavana’s Amandine Rose, which is more pale flower petals than a proper alternative to the holy grail Almond Biscotti. I still enjoy every cup, but the diminishing returns tell me this requires less leaves in a smaller tin and enjoyed more infrequently for a rarer taste.

Wow. Forgot I bought this one. I added some brown sugar before the hot water adn it was great. Lots of flavour. Strange that it tastes like Rum with none in it. You can taste all the elements in it. I am not a huge coconut fan and this was great even with the taste of coconut.

And I only got a 50g bag but it was so filled I think this will last me awhile. Can’t wait to throw a little rum in it on a cold winter night. This is defiantely a keeper.

This might be my favorite black tea ever! I first tried it with a friend of mine, and cup after cup I just kept being like “I don’t even usually like black tea…but this is amazing!!” all enthused about it. I’ve had the worst trouble finding flavored black teas I like since I generally don’t have much of a taste for black tea as a base (or on its own, really), and this has been the first tea to give me hope that it’s not impossible to find good ones.

It really does have that buttery flavor, like a buttered rum Lifesaver only less artificial. There’s a creamy sweet scent as you raise the cup up to drink, and surprisingly it’s almost as strong in the actual taste as it is in the smell. Just all-around delicious, like a morning (or evening!) cup of candy. Yes!

Called my mom this morning to tell her about our latest adventures (dishwasher broke, pipe burst, and sick cat) and she was sitting down with some of the Buttered Rum I’d sent her. This inspired me to make a cup of my own, as I’m in dire need of a pick me up, and boy did this work! So creamy and rum-y and delicious.

Today I played the Random Tea Encounter game my wife gave me, and I rolled doubles, so I picked a card. “Choose a tea with a terrible pun in the name or description (Yo ho ho-conut!), drink it, and wish you were drinking Red Rose the whole time.” My in-laws are notorious for their bad puns, and that’s how my mother in law drinks looseleaf tea, wishing it was Red Rose the whole time.

So I chose this one! And in an effort to use up the soy milk in the fridge and get myself in the habit of using it (I’m a milk drinker from way back with a complete inability to digest the stuff), I made a latte! It is incredibly tasty, I steeped the leaves in the water and then again in the milk, which I then frothed because, let’s face it, I was bored out of my mind.

I don’t think this will become my usual method of making this tea, as it is kind of time-intensive and makes it a touch too rich for my tastes, but it is delicious for a now and again treat. It tastes like something I just want to curl up with and sip the day away. I should have tried this in the winter, but on the first real spring day Toronto has seen this year, it’s a bit much. Bring on the iced teas!

We’re trying to get our stash down a bit, and so when I was trying to decide what tea to take to work in my 1 L thermos, I reached for this, as I only had 10 g left.

It was good, warm and comforting on what turned out to be a very stressful day. My coworkers refused to believe it wasn’t alcoholic XD. However, I talked to the wife about it and we agree. Buttered Rum is nice, but there are many other teas we tend to reach for first. When we have it, we enjoy it, but we don’t seek it out. So it will not be replaced…for now!

Steeped this one smells just like buttered rum to me. A bit sweet, with vanilla, and caramel.
At first this one tastes mostly black tea and coconut, then as you swallow it slowly turns into vanilla. Mmmm the vanilla taste is amazing! Then as you swallow the vanilla flavour turns into caramel, and a bit of a peppery flavour. The after taste is buttered rum. So good! Loving this tea :)

My first sniff of this tea brewed revealed buttery tones, but I swear the dry leaves smelled like chocolate. Strange. Each sip is quite bland, forgettable even, but once I forget I start noticing a buttery aftertaste. Adding more sugar than I normally use speeds up the arrival of the butter, but it’s still pretty mellow and I’d like to have a mouth full of flavor instead. I feel like the flavor is a little more pronounced as it cools, but still not as strong as I like. I see that there is coconut in it, but it seems the coconut has somehow been coaxed into tasting more like butter than it’s normal self. Power of name suggestion or some sort of coconut wizardry? You decide!

The tea wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t amazing either. Guess that leaves it in the gray area of moderately good.

Brewed: 1 tbsp of tea brewed loose in 2-cup pot with freshly boiled water.

First cup: Brewed for 5 minutes
The flavour has a bit of a dry quality to it, I think it’s between the coconut flakes and the vanilla… though I think (in mentally comparing it to DAVIDsTEA’s old Irish Cream tea) I can pick out the flavour (or at least the astringency) of the cornflowers.

Second cup: Same steep, approx 25 minutes brewed.
The flavours are stronger, though it doesn’t seem bitter-oversteeped. That being said I added milk to it after a few sips anyway. The addition gave it a rather smooth quality, and definitely brought out the butter part of the “buttered rum”.

Third cup: Resteep (a few hours later), approx 10 minutes brewed
Tastes rather watered down. Drinkable, but not something I’d really go after. So, more of a one-steep wonder. (I may try adding a black teabag to the resteep next time and see if that adds enough body while still letting a hint of flavour come through….)

Fourth cup: Same resteep, longer brewing time
Flavour stronger now (thankfully), but still not quite right with me. Still a little astringent, and coconut seems very predominant.

My overall impression: Not bad. Not great — I prefer teas that can steep better the second time, and while the flavour certainly wasn’t unappealing, it wasn’t something I would go out of my way for either. This isn’t surprising though, I’m generally not one for coconut when given the choice, or alcoholic beverages for that matter (though as with everything, there are exceptions….) I’ve also heard that this goes really well with some sugar. I’ll try that again, and may adjust my ratings/feelings if I find it better that way. But still, not bad overall.

My rating: B- 72%. Certainly passable, but not something I’d go out of my way for. May be far better enjoyed by a more rum-loving audience than I.

This is such a fantastic tea! I feel a bit guilty when drinking it at the office because the rum flavour is so authentic. I’m not usually a coconut fan, but don’t mind it in this blend. Overall, this is a DAVIDsTEA classic and I love the creamy flavour. I also suggest adding some rum to it and making yourself a teatini!

One of my all-time favourites! The smell kind of bothered me at first for some reason, but once I got past that and took a sip, I was hooked. It’s sweet, but not too sweet. Yummmmmmmmmy

This tea smells absolutely amazing and I was very excited to try it! It definitely disappointed though… I found there to be quite a bitter aftertaste which ruined what would otherwise have been an excellent tea. Maker error perhaps? I will have to try again soon…

So after my distaste last time, I decided to not follow the instructions and try again. I brewed it weak (only one tsp), using cooler water and only steeped for three or so minutes. I did like it with these specifications, as I found the bitter aftertaste was gone, however it did taste kind of weak. I upped my rating a bit from last time, but this is still a tea I won’t be re-buying once I run out…

Ohhhhh yes. This one is just divine. I love love LOVE vanilla in tea, and this combination of a good black tea and amazing creamy flavours is just fabulous. Of course, I had this tea a couple months ago as part of the advent calendar and noted “Very Good” on the back of the box, but didn’t write any other details down. Have to wait until it cools to really give it a good review, but today’s teeny taste of the hot stuff was creamy and great. Eeeee, I love the guilt-free nature of tea treats… in stark contrast to the WHOLE Terry’s Chocolate Orange I devoured last night :/ (It is really too bad that I don’t like Oh Christmas Treat, as that would solve many of my problems…)

Ok, this is definitely just as good as I remember. The more it cools, the more deliciousness emerges. The smell is a light, sweet butterscotch and the taste is gently sweet and buttery, with a light background of the black tea so it tastes grounded. I’m not sure if I taste rum; to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever had rum straight before, as I’m not a big fan of alcohol. I’ve had it in pina coladas, but there are too many delicious flavours there to be able to distinguish it if you don’t know what you’re tasting for!

ETA: Second steep, for which I had low expectations as the tea ball smelled like nothingness, is actually decent. Reduced smell and creamy taste, but it’s still there; it hasn’t just turned into something tasteless. I’m impressed; probably worth the second steep most days! I don’t think I’ll go for a third, or at least not tonight, given that it’s past 11pm and I should really have switched to caffeine-free by now.

ETA (again): Third steep (5.5min), which I stupidly have tried even though it’s 3am, amazingly still retains a bit of the buttery rum flavour, but at this point I’d rather brew a fresh cup of something else as it just isn’t flavourful enough, and I don’t believe that a longer steep would have improved the flavour much more.

Overall an excellent tea if you’re craving a sugary-sweet guilt-free treat! Large tin, here I come!

Comparing this one to Market Spice’s Rum Butter, this one is a little sweeter and more candy-like in aroma. Sniffing it, I am also reminded of some of DavidsTea’s rooibos blends. Not sure if it’s a flavouring association (although in this case, hopefully, since the bases shouldn’t be similar!).

Flavourwise, it’s a bit astringent, but sweet and rummy-tasting. There is coconut in this one, and it does come through a bit – perhaps that’s part of the flavour association? I should compare this to coconut cream pie as well. Haven’t had that one in a while since my bad experience one day in the field (using uber crappy field station water), which turned me off all teas I had that day (Malted ChocoMate, Jane Austen Mafia, Coconut Cream Pie, Blueberry Rooibos).

Although this is an unintended comparison, in terms of a desserty flavoured black, I think I liked 52teas Pot O’ Gold better than either of these. And although this one is sweeter and more desserty, the base of Rum Butter is definitely more appealing. My choice however, might be Pot of Gold… (I should do a direct comparison with Rum Butter though, as those two are the most similar. I guess it’s because of the butterscotch flavouring being pretty similar to buttered rum). So, bonus for coconut haters!

Another downside of this one is more oily scum on the top – Rum Butter barely had any. It’s possible that it’s due to the coconut flakes, though.

Second infusion (96C/5min): tastes a bit sweet/buttered rummy, but not a lot of base tea. Not bad, not great.

Dropping the rating here; I had it quite high but really wasn’t enjoying it as much as I apparently had previously.

Bugger, Steepster just ate my note about this tea. Basically, same method as Coconut Cream Pie, it smells lovely like sweet buttery rum (although it’s muted since it’s cold), but unfortunately has a plasticky taste, which is not likely due to being steeped in a plastic cup as it’s the first time I’ve tasted it. Basically, I concluded that icing teas may not be for me, although I do tend to like teas warm or at room temperature. I’m so annoyed right now; all day I’ve been typing up notes in Word, and I decide not to, and get the darn kettle when I try to post my note. Argh.

Oh yes, and I added a bit of agave which improved the flavour, but that plasticky taste is still there and it bothers me.

Butterrum lifesavers in a tea? SIGN ME UP!

I have no idea why I waited this long to try this one, seriously, what was wrong with me? I made my first cup tonight and like the multitasker I am, got distracted before removing the infuser. It got at least an eight minute steep but still, nearly perfect! I added a dash of sugar and smiled after every sip. Can’t wait to try it with a proper steeping time now!

Despite having the last 9 teas of David’s wall I have yet to try in my possession, I made this one when I got home from work. I needed a comfort tea since I fell in the mud, and this did the trick. Happy teas for the win!

Last cup of the night, nothing new to report.

Day 49 of my 101 days of tea. A leftover from my advent calendar — dumped the entire container into my 2-cupper.

Yummm. Was NOT expecting to like the tea as much as I do. There’s a real buttery aftertaste to this tea, and a little nutty as well. There’s a bit of a bitter or sour note which I’m pretty sure is the cornflowers — not in an oversteeped kind of way, but more… enhansing the flavour.

Tried it with milk the second time while eating a bit of pecan pie — the sweetness definitely enhanses the flavour! That being said, it’s quite nice straight as well.

Sipping on some of this piping hot with a little splash of baileys is exactly what I needed on this rainy cold afternoon. Very fitting for fall.

The unbrewed tea smells sweet and of RUM. Strongly rum.

The steeped tea is pleasantly sweet in a vanilla way and a rum-sweet way.

The flavor shows no rum, it is somewhat watery with a buttery secondary taste… maybe a hint of rum in the nose but not really any flavor of it.

I’ll try this with more tea and longer steeping times.

Tried this at twice as much tea and a minute longer steeping time. Still just a weak top-of-mouth sweetness and a little darkness in the back of the mouth. No “buttered rum” flavor, mostly just watery-tea taste.

This isn’t for me.

Okay, so after reading all the notes about this tea every day and drooling all over myself, I finally got a cup from the DT at the mall.

As it steeped I thought the aroma was so-so.. nothing too strong. The first few sips burned my mouth but I was anxious haha, and I tasted more coconut than anything (which I LOVE so it’s all good)… but then I went down to the cafeteria at my work and added a little sugar and some thick cream. Oh. my God.

I have NEVER tasted a tea this delicious and decedant in my life!
I’m going back tomorrow and buying as much as I can.

Edit: Just bought a 100g tin and can’t stop smelling it at work. Delicious distraction.

Oh my – found enough for one cup of this at the bottom of a tea drawer.
Um, yes. Hello! I still over-did it that time when I drank 100g in a week – but my love for you is returning Buttered Rum.

The sweetness. The coconut. The amazing rummy aftertaste. Yep, falling in love all over again. My wallet.. er.. not so much ;)

Birthday Tea!!
Almost done my tin D: But not quite. And so I will keep sippin’.

Ta ta for now Buttered Rum, I shared the last 2 cups of you with my mom.
You were delish and I drank you every day, but now Punkin chai is here to take me away.
I will return, I won’t be long! eh I’m out of rhymes.

Awesome tea, will restock asap!
oops.

So when I first fell in love with this tea, I bought 100g and drank it every day.
Oops, just like when I listen to a CD too much (CD, is that still relevant? haha) I get sick of this music, and I got sick of this amazing tea.

So it’s still amazing, but I killed it. I’m sorry Buttered Rum!

OK so I have to post another note because today I FINALLY tasted the Rum!
Yep, I didn’t taste it in my last 2 cups but today I do. I dunno. I’m weird. I tasted buttery coconut goodness before, but today I got the rum and I am over the roof with happiness and tastiness.

Also, I’ve had my DT iced tea mug cold brewing an iced version of this tea all night, I’ll edit this note with how that tastes soon!

Edit: Just a quick note that this tea resteeps a second time quite well. I left it in for about 8 minutes instead of 6, and I may have added too much cream to both cups because I go a little crazy with cream. Gotta try milk if I want to lose weight I guess, lest I drink 4 cups of this a day o_o

One more note!

So I cold brewed it overnight, and this is more of a hot tea for me I think :)

The black tea taste really came out with the cold brew, and it still has the tang of rum taste and coconut, but it’s not as rich as a hot brew.

Refreshing, but I’m really wishing I could put a splash of rum in there to add a little more flavour. (Totally possible that i didn’t use enough tea!)
