Citron Oolong

Oolong Tea by DAVIDsTEA

This blend of high-grown oolong is truly rejuvenating. It’s scented with lemon myrtle, jasmine and natural citrus essences, and the result is light, fresh and uplifting. Try drinking a cup after a heavy meal to take the edge off. Oolong is, after all, known to speed your metabolism and block fat absorption. In China, it’s been used as a heart saver for hundreds of years.

I thought I already tried this one but when I tore open the bag, the strong lemon/orange aroma convinced me otherwise. I must have had this confused with one of their other oolongs. Anyways. I was expecting a subtle citrus with a creamy green oolong and slightly floral jasmine. Instead I got more jasmine flowers than tea and more lemon flavor than a lemon. I was not really a fan of this hot. It had a strong herbal flavor. So I chilled it with added water. Much better. Then I managed to get two cold brews with the same leaves. I’m going for one more overnight.

So this isn’t really the best lemon tea. I wanted to taste the oolong. But it’s alright hot but good cold. and its good for many infusions. So pros and cons. It is a very refreshing cold drink.

Edit: I just re-read this. I make no sense. But I’m tired so I’ll leave it. :P

softrevolution sent me a nice baggie of this! Thanks a bunch!

I remember LOVING Rishi’s Citron Oolong but haven’t tried DavidsTea’s Version until now. It’s pretty good. I don’t know if it’s as Citrony as the Rishi or if it was just my error in steeping times…this was a more muted or mellow Citron and maybe a tad more floral flavor. Regardless it was still tasty.

When I can’t find Rishi’s this right up there to have on hand!

I decided to try this tea this afternoon, which I got in a swap with brandy3392. Thanks! I do love lemony oolongs, and this one seems like it will be lemony beyond lemony! When I opened the package the powerful scent of lemon immediately rushed out. As I was portioning it out I noticed that the tea seemed to be made up of more jasmine blossoms than actual tea! So I hope I put enough of the blend in my steeping basket.

I don’t usually steep my oolongs for 4 minutes, but this one called for between 4 and 7 minutes so I went with the low end. I honestly can’t imagine steeping any tea for 7 minutes. Steeped, the tea smells lemony and herby with a bit of oolong peeking through. This is a really lemony tea, in both a citrusy way and a lemon herb (must be the verbena) way. Something like this could easily seem tart or bitter or pithy, but it’s got a round, sweetish flavor instead. I think that must be the influence of the oolong, which is otherwise a bit difficult to detect. Occasionally I get a faint, elusive note of florals or the buttery base, and those notes come out more as it cools. The oolong that’s there is really tasty. I like this blend but I would like it better with more oolong in it, I think. It is not for the lemony faint of heart, for sure.

This sample came to me courtesy of taite. The dry leaf aroma is invigorating!! Like fresh squeezed OJ. The jasmine flowers intrigued me. I have never had a tea with the actual flowers in it. The liquor is a pale yellow with a faint citrus aroma. I would compare the aroma to warm Orange Crush or Squirt. Initially the jasmine stands out. As it is cooling down though I’m tasting some nice citrus notes. I can see though how this tea might throw some people off. I’m thinking rather than the jasmine some vanilla would be killer in this. Almost like drinking a creamcicle. The second half of the pot has darkened a little bit. I have noticed this with greens lately too. Pale at first then a little more yellow. Theres a little more citrus coming out too. Almost like absolute citron, which may have been the goal in creating this tea. Or the flavor could be comparable to the scent of hand sanitizer. Either way I can tell this is one of those teas you like or you don’t. It’s pretty good but I’m not sure if I would buy a whole package of it. I am liking the chance some DAVIDs selections to my palette.

BLEH BLEH BLEH! This was gross and left the worst after taste in my mouth… Hated it. This was served and recommended to me by the person working at David ‘s tea and I mean it sounds intriguing everything about it. They said it was a perfect iced tea, so I went ahead and trusted their advice. Definitely not perfect. The taste of bitter jasmine and tart lemon ( but like not a zesty lemon, just a pungent grossness ) over rode the oolong to the point that it didn’t even taste like tea any more. Honestly, I love davids tea and the usually give great advice, but I strongly dislike this tea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i’m really into oolongs this week. mostly inspired by everyone’s coconut oolong love explosion.

what other Davids Tea oolongs are you favorites? i think i might place an order of just oolongs?
i have vanilla orchid, quangzhou milk, and this citron already.

i like having my citrusy teas in the morning. so this one is perfect perfect perfect.
in my green timolino walking across the bridge on my way to work. it’s windy here but the sun is out.

Received this as a sample when I ordered some new tins online (yes they look cool, but they are a bit too big I think). Usually I go to my local store to buy from Davids, but I hate going to the mall in December.

This was one of those teas I’ve sniffed more than a few times in the store, but I never purchased any because the strong citrus smell was off putting. I enjoy citrus flavoured stuff but I have my limits.

Anyway, onto brewing and drinking this stuff. The oolong is present but the citrus really overpowers it. I’d enjoy this more if the citrus didn’t shout so loudly at my senses.

Disappointed but not surprised. I can see why people like this, but I am not a fan.

I got this tea as a sample in my first ever David’s Tea order. This was also my first oolong tea, and I absolutely fell in love with it. I made that tea sample stretch as far as I could, and then ended up buying some in one of thier stores. I was a little sad about the quality of the tea I got from the store, it was a bit stale compared to what I recieved in the sample. I suppose the teas may sit in the store for a long while, I don’t really know. But, I happily drank it anyway.

The smell of this tea makes me smile. I can’t help it, it’s a big dorky toe-curling smile, and I’m pretty sure I do the whole mmmm-mmmm thing out loud, wether anyone is around to hear me or not.

However, to every love story there has to be a bump in the road, right? I debated for a long time about wether or not to post this. I considered just throwing out the tea, possibly all of my david’s tea, and finding somewhere else to get my fix. But I’m very indecisive, and tea like this is so new to me…Maybe I’m being dumb about the whole thing.

The problem? You see, I found a bug in my tea. I know, it happens. It’s a natural product, bugs are everywhere…they’re bound to be in tea somewhere at some point. Maybe even take it as a sign that it’s a good tea, since even the bugs think it’s yummy. I wish I would have taken a picture, but it didn’t occur to me at the time. I was so freaked out that I dumped the tea and doused my teaware in boiling vinegar about a dozen times.

How do you recover from finding one of the icky-er creepy crawlies in your tea? I’ve since found one in another tea by davids, but it was a different and less freaky bug. I get the feeling I’m over-reacting…but there is.

Pretty tasty :) A good hot lemon tea :D

I’m drinking all my David’s Tea oolongs at work now since they seem to give my mom a migraine. Even the smell seems to set one off. (sighs) oh well Butiki Teas seem to be fine with her and the pumpkin chai so I don’t have to hide all my stash :D

Taking a break from trying new things and since I’m at work might as well have this :D

Pretty tasty and it does help me relax a bit at work.

Another trade from Stephanie
Smells strongly of lemon.
Light liquor.
I get Orange as the dominant flavor and some lemon in the background. Very hard to taste the oolong as the citrus flavors take center stage. It’s an enjoyable blend for me. My first time trying a David’s Tea I believe and not disappointed.

Got this as a sample from a DavidsTea order, and I’ve been saving it for a while. There’s a ton of stuff in the tea, more than I expected from 5g. pretty lemon myrtle flowers and a bright citrusy scent. It was really fun to watch brew, the leaves unfurl so beautifully. The tea itself is a pretty gold color with a distinctly lemon flavor. I actually think the second steep was more lemony than the first.

Lately I have become rather enamoured with oolongs, and trying them out in blends while actually making an effort to taste the tea part of the blend. I had good success with that the other day with Happy Kombucha, and now am really wanting to try Long Life Oolong and a few other of DTs oolong blends. I also was at Bulk Barn tonight, and it took everything I had not to pick up their bulk oolongs (but I’m sure that’s not too far in the future :D)

Anyhow! This tea smells EXACTLY what I was hoping the Three Lemon Green would smell like! Pure citrusy and lemony, no cleaner scent at all (well, except for those cleaners whose companies have nailed the tasty lemon scent. But in that case, I want to eat the cleaner anyways….) And for a blend, I saw a fair bit of tea, which made me happy.

Steeped, it still smells deliciously citrusy, and… what’s that? Do I actually smell OOLONG?! This is a first!

Oh yum… this is a gooder. I can’t quite taste the oolong, but it’s there, adding to the complexity of the sip. And so citrusy, just like it smells.

Yum. I think this might be better if I supplemented it a bit with another oolong, but I’m pretty impressed. For whatever reason, this hadn’t made the cut when I made up the ginormous list of teas I wanted to buy from DavidsTea, but I received it as a sample in my last online order, and am happy for it :)

ETA: Two more steepings of this today (94/4? minutes, and 95/? minutes). I don’t think I like them as much as I did the first steep yesterday, but they are still ok. The third is starting to have a bit of a funky taste in addition to the lemon, so that’s all I’m going for. This one might have a sometimes home in my cupboard, and I still plan to blend it with a straight oolong in the future.

Whoops, accidently let this one cool completely. Oh well! I meant to stick some in the fridge anyhow! Also, another sipdown!! Go me :D

The aroma is quite lemony (I can’t tell you exactly which herb it’s from), and the flavour is quite fresh and lemon and delicious. I can’t really taste the oolong in the first infusion. The last time I tried this, I liked the first infusion alright, but not the second two, so we’ll see how they go. I had written a note to add more oolong the second time around but sadly forgot :(

ETA: Second infusion deliciously lemony. No real oolong flavour. I think a lemon oolong would be fabulous; I wish this either had more oolong in it or a better oolong base. It looked a little crunchy to me (unlike Banana Oolong).

Learned a lesson with this one today. Pink Flamingo and Citron Oolong were the teas of the day, and I guzzled my little cup of Pink Flamingo first… and then couldn’t taste this one AT ALL, except for a tiny hint of citrusy oolong at the end. So word of warning, if you’re trying both teas of the day, drink the weaker one first!!!

I disagree with the bad reviews, I think this tea’s really great. Make sure it has room to expand because it expands a lot! And it’s really beautiful. Would be lovely in a glass teapot.
The lemon myrtle and jasmine do take the forefront and there’s a hint of orange oil. I like the oolong base, it’s light and refreshing. Like the description says, it’s quite rejuvenating. I had received this as a sample and I’ll be purchasing more of it next order.

All I want is a citrus tea that’s ice-able…

So, yesterday I went into DAVIDsTEA with a list, since without one I get overwhelmed very quickly but the sheer number of teas I have not tried. I wanted (more) Jolly Jellybean, Amaretto, and some La La Lemon (to be iced). The sales-girl helping me recommended this tea instead of La La Lemon, since apparently that tea tends to get pretty bitter.

Now, the last time I tried this tea was the summer of last year and my opinion wasn’t very high: “…not really my thing. I think it might be the oolong? Or maybe the harsh lemon? Either way, it wasn’t smooth enough to really grab me.” BUT I’d only tried it in-store, so maybe brewing it at home would make a difference.

I cold-brewed it in my fridge: 1L of previously boiled (mine was lukewarm) water + 5g Citron Oolong + place pitcher in fridge overnight. The end product was… alright. A bit too floral for my taste, so I added extra lime + agave.

Any recommendations on a nice, citrus-y ice-able tea? Or should I just stick with Red Rose suntea + lemon?

On my fourth steep of this while I work on this (http://worseforwear.blogspot.ca/2013/03/hippocampus-zebra.html) and still getting plenty of citrus-y goodness! I forgot how much I love this tea hot and it has the added bonus of lasting me well throughout the day! Yay for finding delicious ways to stay hydrated in this 37th week of my pregnancy!

I tried to cold-brew this, with mixed results, but kept the leaves because… well, it’s an oolong and I could probably try to get a couple hot steeps outta the remaining leaves, right?

And personally, so much better hot. Reminiscent of the hot-lemonades my dad used to make me when I was sick, but more… sophisticated? Yeah, that’s gotta be it. This is the second steep of these leaves and it’s got the oolong creaminess balanced by the lemon astringency, with a teensy hint of the floral jasmine at the end. Lovely AND delicious.

Verdict: not a fan of it iced (sorry DAVIDsTEA sales-associates), but delightful when hot. Might have to try and stretch the leaves for a third steep…

1 TB for 450mL water, bare. Rating: 80.

Okay, once the jasmine comes out, around the 4-5-minute mark, this blend gets intriguing. Not getting much oolong here, just a hit of butter behind the jasmine and the lemon. The lemon could dominate and ruin everything; the jasmine’s an inspired touch and that keeps the lemon playing reasaonbly nicely. Not a brilliant oolong blend, but it is soothing. Avoid if you don’t like lemon, because that’s definitely the dominant flavour and scent here. The oolong leaves are beautiful when they unfurl.

I’d love to try just a straight jasmine oolong. Anyone have a recommendation?

4.5 tsp for 750mL water @ 90C, steeped 4 minutes in a Breville One Touch with the basket cycle on.

I wasn’t crazy about this blend. Tonight I made it as much to scent my study with lemon and jasmine as to drink it. I’ve eaten a lot of sweet and heavy food over the past few days, so lemony-oolong seemed the way to go.

I like this better than the last time I tried it. Maybe making in by the pot, versus by the cup, helps. I might even use cooler water next time, maybe 82 instead of 90, because the citrus in this is slightly bitter. The jasmine is very difficult to pick up — no taste or scent of jasmine at all. I still don’t think this is a brilliant blend, but the oolong base is light. Much of the bag is filled with some sort of blossom; I’m not sure how much actual oolong is here.

I really enjoyed the bright verbena and lemongrass high notes, balanced by the earthy oolong second. I think it would be easy to miss the oolong when it is under-steeped, I learned that out of stubborness when I let it steep for a full ten minutes, I was entirely determined to get some body out of it. It ddi, and further brewing made me stick to a minimum five minute steep.

Other than that, the only thing I noted was that if you enjoy a little sweet in your tea, honey was much nicer than sugar for this blend. Something about the lemon makes standard white sugar taste almost metallic – bad bad bad. Honey, however, seemed to blend much more smoothly.

Love, love, love this tea! It’s wonderfully refreshing. I think it’d be equally as delicious iced, but I haven’t had the chance to try it out yet.

The tea smells strongly of orange, but it mellows out and balances perfectly with jasmine, lemon myrtle, and oolong after brewed. I’ve gotten 5 amazingly flavorful steeps out of this by adding one minute to each successive steep. The orange fades away and the lemon shines through more each time.

I love watching the leaves unfurl as they steep. This tea expands A LOT. One of DAVIDsTEA’s perfect spoonfuls in 14oz. of water looks like:

Having a really cruddy day, and this is warm, creamy, fresh, and perfect. If only life’s problems could be solved by a cup of tea…this one is certainly a nice escape.

I really don’t remember it being this creamy. I’m glad I got two of the 60g/$5 packs :-)

Had this tonight. I enjoyed it because I am a big fan of lemon but I really didn’t get much oolong with it. I wonder if it is my small sample size since I got 14g at the store on Saturday so maybe it wasn’t well combined. It was a very light coloured tea and I steeped it for almost the full 7 minutes. Tomorrow I will resteep and leave the tea in and see if I can get more oolong flavour out of it.

Funny that I really have no experience with oolongs but I am really enjoying them. Normally I am more of a black or green tea person. Thanks to everyone on here who have helped me broaden my tea horizons.
