Bai Hao Yin Zhen

White Tea by DAVIDsTEA

A most beautiful tea

This is a true luxury, considered by many to be China’s most famous white tea. To create it, only the first leaves and downy, silvery unopened buds of the tea plant are picked by hand during the April harvest. How does this influence the flavour and aroma? Connoisseurs rave about its sweet complexity, and about an underlying grassy taste that makes it uniquely perfect.

Erm, not bad but not great either. As usual they left the bag in… which meant that by the time I could take a decent sip it was wayyyyy oversteeped.
I miss my savour moments! you know, when you just take a moment to really enjoy the cuppa in front of you even if your days is swarming with distractions and work.
In fact, I really can’t comment much on the flavour besides saying I think it’d be pleasant when done properly. It had a hint of sweetness at the end to.
Bah. throws hands up in the air

Well, I gave this one another chance! and I think I’ve finally met a white tea I don’t like. I was afraid this day would come…
Unless it’s simply that the leaves were scorched (quite possible), then this tea really is not great at all. In fact, this is how I imagine a no name, grade C, or even D, BAGGED white tea would taste
Boring. Rough. Bitter. None of these are words I associate with good tea!

So I’ve never really had just a straight, white tea before! I’ve had a few different flavoured varieties but never just the tea on its own. I probably never would have tried this tea if left to my own devices, but last night I was invited to a little seminar at the David’s Tea near my house. We tasted different teas, and talked about the benefits of tea and how different kinds are processed and blended. I really enjoyed it!

And I really enjoyed this tea! It has a sweet grassy taste—but it isn’t a bad thing! If you’ve ever had one of Jelly Belly’s Bertie Botts grass flavoured beans, you’ll know what I mean when I say it isn’t a bad taste. It reminds me a bit of honeysuckle, or clover and doesn’t need sweetener at all to be incredibly pleasant to drink!

For real. I left David’s Tea with a tin of it immediately after the tasting!

I really enjoyed this one. Took it for the drive through traffic to school this morning. I am really loving plain teas, especially white. It’s really too bad it’s so expensive.

It was a nice, calming tea. Very light flavour, and light overall.

I added some unsweetened shredded coconut to this today. I love, love, love coconut and I wanted to see how it would taste with a straight white base.

Oh yes. I’m really enjoying it. All coconut.

Update March 5/13: Having this lovely mix again. Man I love coconut. I’ll have to keep this tea on hand just to have a coconut white à la Courtney. Perhaps I should try it with David’s White Peony and save myself some money if that tastes just as delish.

I’m always hesitant when I drink straight whites and greens. I don’t enjoy grassy flavours, or ones that just taste . . . planty . . . at all. Thankfully this tea didn’t have that. It is very light, almost too light even more me. I had a few sips of it without adding anything and found it had a slight underhint of something. I hesitate to say vanilla but there was definitely something nice sneaking in. Wondering if some sugar would highlight it so I could pinpoint what I was tasting I added a halfspoon of sugar. And wow, suddenly the tea was almost tasteless.

I don’t dislike this tea, but it isn’t my favourite white so I don’t think I’ll be purchasing it again. It isn’t a bad tea, it just isn’t memorable or something I see myself ever having a craving for.

This is a nice white tea. The leaves are quite beautiful, of course, and the aroma is fresh and grassy.

The flavor, though, is not as complex as I would have imagined. It is a simple fresh tea.

It’s a pleasant drink to experience, but not something out of the ordinary.

This tea is spectacular. The golden color and the lighten taste.
Almost heaven.

It has some “spicy” aftertaste and some kind of vanilla sweetness. It’s hard to describe, but this tea have a really complex aroma.

You know when you got a special tea, it give you a little “buzz”. Like a dreamy day with beautiful snow falling down with a big serene sun splashing over the snow.

This is that kind of tea. Try it a little less hot than what DavidsTea recommend you (85 degrees will be perfect.) and steep it for 10 minutes.

This is one great Bao Hao Yin Zhen, but not the best ever. As a white tea, the “Sri Lanka Silver Needles” from DT was WAY more memorable, but it was in a limited supply…

Best tea in the world, I wait 20 seconds after the water reaches the boiling point and steep my tea in for 14 minutes, around the temperature that is drinkable without being burnt and it is godly. Try it.

This is my favourite by far. I have a cup of it every morning when I’m not trying to fight a cold. On the days I can’t have it, I think about how much I’d love to have it.

The dry leaves look like they were freshly picked. They’re soft to touch and have a fuzzy down that causes its silver appearance. The colour of the leaves is pale green that is sage-like in appearance, and the initial aroma is grassy. There is a faint scent that is reminiscent of seaweed. It’s not too prominent but there nonetheless. Luckily, it is soon forgotten by the soft floral notes dancing about. It’s almost like dandelions.

This tea is a little tricky to scoop because it doesn’t like to be separated. The downy texture causes the leaves to grab onto each other and unless you use your fingers or a pick to control what goes into your scoop, you can wind up with half a tin in your cup. There’s so much love here.

When the tea is first steeped, the little furs disappear and the scent becomes floral. I always feel like I’m in a meadow on a fresh day when I make this tea. There is so much Zen in this cup. The colour of the leaves becomes less silvery and takes on a darker green with some browning that resembles a little bruising.

The liquor is clear. It’s a pale greenish umber with soft yellow highlights, and the flavour is very light and delicate. There are subtle grass and floral notes that don’t overpower each other. The aftertaste is clean and its lingering effect is very subtle and refreshing.

I like the delicate flavour and aroma of this tea. It’s never bitter and it always tastes clean. I can brew it at high or low temperatures and for a short or long duration. It always tastes right. It might be too light for people who prefer their tea strong, but it’s just perfect for me.

I was a bit surprised at DT’s suggested steeping temp and time (4-5 min at 94C), as I was afraid it would turn bitter on me. I decided to follow the instructions for the first cup at least, and am happy to report no bitterness.

Unlike one of the other reviewers, I like the fact that there are no floral additions to this tea. It has a very light, grassy taste and smell to it. NO perfumey or floral notes here.

Overall, a very mild, pleasant cup of tea. It’s not one that I’ll think to drink often, as it’s not very distinctive (maybe I’m not used to luxuries enough to appreciate its subtle qualities, lol), but I’ll enjoy it when I do drink it.

I let the water cool before adding my tea, so chances are that the water was a bit cooler than instructed- but when it comes to white I much rather under do than over! I was very satisfied with the flavor of both the first and second steeping. first time I was a bit surprised that it had more flavor than I expected! if seemed sweet and flowery on its own. first seeping also had another flavor that I’m not eloquent enough to describe in few words, so I’ll just say this- it tasted like the smell of butterflies. that’s not just some fluffy simile either! lovely like a slightly buggy pollen. it was very nice! but its pretty pricey, as expected from a straight white tea. I will certainly enjoy it on special occasion or when I need soft nudge on a bad day.

I am a white tea lover so obviously I would love this tea. This is by far my favourite traditional tea from Davids Tea.
The dry leaves are full and furry. Its smells great. The steeped liquor is very light and it has a light scent. I would definitely call this a refreshing yet relaxing tea. It had a sweet flavour to it, which was nice.
Only downside, it’s a bit on the expensive side :( I will still be purchasing a lot of this tea. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

It’s light and subtle, a little bit grassy. I think, it’s meant to drink occasionally, definitely not every day or on the go

This is one of my favorite teas, it has a lite earthy taste with a bit of a subtle -almost citrus – aftertaste. The leaves are beautiful and young and for the most part intact in the tin, even after shipping.

As corny as it sounds- if you close your eyes and mull the tea over in your mouth you can almost see the scene where this tea is picked. I like my tea to be steeped in water a little cooler than what David suggests, and at the far end of the spectrum for time — 7 minutes.

Do not let this over steep! I repeat, DO NOT OVER STEEP! White teas are extremely delicate and will ruin the soft, subtle flavours in this tea. Over all love it for the green tea lover who wants to try something new but not too daring. Almost floral!

I really like this and used to buy it a lot but I found it was just getting too expensive. So I gave it up for cheaper pastures. I do recommend though for white tea lovers.

Even after oversteeping it, it wasn’t bitter at all and was quite pleasant.

My DavidsTea accomplice pointed this out as one of the very few teas on the wall I hadn’t tried, so I did. I’m a fan of white tea, but perhaps I was expecting more flavour. To me, it just tasted like slightly grassy water with a refined edge to it. If I wanted something completely plain it would be an okay choice, but it was missing the lightness of Jasmine or something that I have had in other only slightly flavoured white teas. I didn’t think it tasted acidic as some other comments have stated, but I DID taste something regal about it. Perhaps I just bought in to the “true luxury” claim on the container though. Regardless, I’m still a sucker for most white teas.

An alright white tea, more acidic than I expected. Quite grassy in taste, not a big fan.
