Nepal Black Tea

Black Tea by DAVIDsTEA

There are good things brewing in the Highlands of Nepal. Like this hand-made black tea, from a small family-owned tea garden named Jun Chiyabari. From the first sip you’ll notice its rich, sweet, honey-like flavour. What doesn’t come through in the cup is how much good this little tea garden does. They’ve set up a ton of amazing community programs to benefit local schools, underprivileged families, and the elderly. This particular tea is a DAVIDsTEA exclusive – now that’s a good thing.

Day 40 of my 101 days of DAVIDsTEA challenge.

Eyeballed 2.5 tsp in my two-cupper. First cup at around 4:15, left the leaves in steeping before having a second cup with milk.

This is a REALLY nice tea… Very earthy, and nice to have on its own. Also, tastes great oversteeped wtih a bit of milk. That being said, the resteep was VERY weak, which saddened me — it would have been nice to see the leaves go farther.

Still, this is the first straight black tea that I’ve ever really liked without doctoring it up with milk and/or some sort of sweetener. Definitely glad I picked this up on the Boxing Day sale!

Simple Plain Black tea, smooth texture throughout the whole sipping experience :)

Pre-steeped it has that cocoa smell common in Chinese teas.
That changed the second I steeped it, the smell and taste here is pretty unique. I guess the closest thing I would compare the flavor to is grilled artichoke, and/or maybe marinated olives? Rich and robust, kind of surprised others found it mild. Creamy mouthfeel. Held up well to multiple infusions. A winner for sure.

My favorite straight black from DAVIDsTEA (even though I’ve only tried three in store). The light honey flavor mixes in perfectly with the black tea (it’s hard to believe the taste is actually from the tea and there is no added honey). So soothing. No astringency on the first steep (I didn’t notice any). Tasted even better on the third steep.

This tea is amazing. One of my favourite black teas. As others commented it has a nice earthy flavor and such an amazing smell. A solid black tea.

Damn I wish I’d watched this one brew. Most of my blacks barely unfurl and so I don’t think anything of just stepping away until the timer goes. But this one opened like a green or a white. Definitely going to watch next time.

Scent wise it is fairly standard to me, and when I sipped it black I felt it was a little weak. (I prefer my blacks to be pretty strong). I added a wee bit of sugar, though, and suddenly it had more flavour, and the honey notes were very present. I am really enjoying this, and am wondering how it’ll taste if I blend it with some Kenyan Tinderet next time.

I was lucky enough to get 50g of this free last weekend from DT in their newsletter sale (yay free tea!) and am I ever glad I did. This is a great mellow but flavourful black that I am really enjoying as my first cup of the morning. I love a black that I can drink without any milk or sugar!

A gentle and sweet mountain tea without a trace of bitterness. Features distinct honey notes and a refreshing quality.

I absolutely loved the smell of this tea when I bought it. The smell was of light honey followed by a classic darjeeling black tea scent.

The smell while steeping turned me off a little, but after taking a few sips I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The flavour consists of a light honey taste, thick maltiness and a bold astringent finish.

Overall, a good black tea but not my favourite.

This is pretty good. It’s a little bit sweet – I’m definitely getting honey – and a little bit malty. Very smooth, not particularly robust. Not much astringency and no bitterness. As far as unflavored black teas go, I usually stick to Darjeelings and while this tea is somewhat reminiscent of those I don’t like it quite as much. I prefer the floral undertones I get from Darjeelings to the honey ones here. This tea is nothing special and I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it again, but I am enjoying it.

Very nice honey notes prominent in the nose of both the dry leaf and the brewed cup. Seems to have no bitter bite; almost wish it had a little bit more. Extremely smooth, yet full bodied and fairly rich. Drank it black, think it would go nicely with milk and sugar.

I like the subtle sweetness this has. I find even when I leave it to steep too long, it doesn’t grow bitter-it reminds me a bit of orange pekoe which I don’t necessarily mind. I initially bought a cup to go, but after enjoying it as much as I did, I slipped back in to buy some to take home with me. Definitely don’t regret it.

Great tea and good flavor. I drink this tea after a heavy meal and it somehow make me feel less “greasy” in the stomach.
