Chocolate Orange (Oh Christmas Treat)

Pu-erh Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Stuff your stocking
Tell Santa not to bother bringing you any chocolate this year. And forget those sweet Christmas oranges. This year, all you need to indulge your festive sweet tooth is this satisfying chocolate orange pu’erh. Just add a splash of brandy, a roaring fire, and some good company. Sorry, sugarplums – the only visions dancing through your head this year will be of dark chocolate, zesty orange peel, and earthy pu’erh tea.

Ingredients: Pu’erh tea, chocolate curls, orange peel and slices, natural and artificial flavouring*.

Drinking tea and coffee on nightshifts is tricky business for me. Black and pu’er teas really, really don’t agree with my body while forcing it to stay awake 8 more hours. But while I was trying to catch a nap before work, all I could think about was THIS tea.

So I drag my lazy butt into the office, log on to the comp, and go directly to the hot water machine (the railroad can wait for me to have my cup of tea!) I don’t have a proper tsp handy so I eye-balled 1.5 tsp. I got mostly chocolate curls and orange rind, haha. But geez louise does it ever smell like chocolate oranges!!

Steeped for 3 mins: The orange hits right away and then it’s just choco heaven. No sweetner tonight, but I also have a loaded candy jar right next to me so perhaps I’ll try dunking a mini Aero bar in this cup. Oh this is good. I hope it won’t upset my stomach later. Mint tea is on hand for that emergency if needed.

So, yeah. Good stuff!

Note: reduced rating overall because the pu’erh snuck up on me, and now that’s all I can taste when drinking this X(

Yep, I can definitely taste and SMELL the pu’erh today. Not sure that I like it as much as the first cup.

I love chocolate oranges (the Terry ones you smash to break into pieces!) and chocolate covered orange peels, so I figured this tea might be good even though pu’ers and I have an iffy relationship. I like the taste, don’t like the smell. Here, the scent of the tea is mostly pu’er (the fishy kind) with a hint of sweetness. I really wish the chocolate was more prominent in the scent. But you do get the chocolate taste in the tea, so it’s not completely missing. Unfortunately there’s not much orange (ok, I didn’t taste any orange at all), it’s basically a chocolate pu’er, which I don’t really mind… but I wanted orange!

I don’t despise this Pu-erh like I do with Naked Pu-erh. But it’s not amazing either. The flavoring takes off the normal earthy mushroomy pu-erh kick but it definitely still is the main player. I could barely taste any chocolate flavoring and I couldn’t even tell that there was any orange in it. The tea left a weird film/taste in my mouth that could have been from the artificial flavoring. The dry leaves smell pretty good though. Thanks Emilie!

Got this one in The Chocolate Box. I think that out of all the teas in the collection, this one had the strongest chocolate taste. (Probably because it uses real, dark chocolate instead of mellowed-out & overly sweetened milk chocolate.)

The earthiness of the Pu’erh blends perfectly with the dark chocolate, and there’s a brillant orange scent and slight citrus note in there, too. Reminds me of those chocolate orange candy-things that you smack on a table to break apart the slices before unwrapping.

A very tasty flavored tea!

While I love the flavours of chocolate and orange with puerh, it turns out that I am not a fan of chocolate “natural flavour” in my teas. Once I’ve finished what I have, I think I’ll be mixing up some of my own, with dark Callebaut and dried orange zest.

(Terry’s Chocolate Oranges result in a face similar to the red one on the rating chart…)

Tastes just like one of those chocolate oranges! But it’s not for me; I guess I don’t really like citrusy teas? Because all I taste is the orange, no chocolate. :S

Took this in to the girls at work this week since I had no luck myself. From reading reviews on the boards it seems pu-erh often has a fishy scent, and that’s why it smelled/tasted so off. I think I might make a new cup and do the rinsing method suggested to see if that helps! :D

This is one where I asked for a whole tin filled even before trying it. It came up to 154 grams. I love chocolate and orange so much that I was confident I’d like it no matter what. I wasn’t disappointed and did enjoy it quite a bit. Very rich chocolate and orange flavours. Nothing mistaken or muddled about it.

My only complaint was if I used too much tea and did a long steep, I would start to get an aritificial, almost chemical taste pop up in the orange flavour. This normally doesn’t occur when I steep it right though.

This tea makes me angry. Tea shouldn’t make you angry, right? I’m not used to tea provoking in me a burning rage. The thing is, this tea is so much better than any other chocolate based tea that I can’t help but look at my tea stash in frustrated, barely hidden contempt when I realise just how many paychecks have been halved by my buying chocolate teas that can’t even begin to be half the tea that Oh Christmas Treat is. I love chocolate, and I always seek out chocolate teas thinking “yes, this is it, this is the one that will make me swoon and say ‘you, darling tea, are as good as hot chocolate!’” Only to take a sip and sadly shake my head in disappointment.

Well, Oh Christmas Treat is not your typical tea that boasts of chocolate and leaves you looking wistfully at the box of truffles that you promised yourself you wouldn’t open until you had company over. No, it’s chocolatey. Really, gloriously, no-lie chocolatey. Terry’s Chocolate Orange in a cup. Foam up the milk for a latte and you’re not going to be remotely tempted to visit your friendly local barista for something foamy and sweet.

What’s this, it’s a seasonal tea? Oh, right, it’s right there in the name. Oh dear, I have one tin to last me the year? Anger… rising… must… ration… sweet mana… nooooooo!

Just a quick edit to express my delight that this tea has been added to the permanent collection. It will be back in stores by the end of February and I won’t have to be angry every time I ration it anymore.

This is so delicious. Christmas in a cup. Smoky chocolate orange without being bitter. Went to get some more and it was sold out. I can’t get the rating bars to work…so I give 100%. I do prefer this tea with cream because it is so rich and dark.

I haven’t had this in almost 2 months…waiting for a special moment when I really needed it. And today I see it is available online HOORAY! because I’m having a bad, bad day! Just got a huge bill ($1100) for a broken tooth and $280 for lenses for glasses in the same day…and I have eye Dr. bills and my ex-husband called to say he was not going to pay me the 6 mo. back support he owes!!! OK…this is Lent! I need to calm down and live in the moment and not stress! So, of course I made the very last of my favorite tea…opened the curtains and looked out at the little snowkles (not real snow), then brought up my steepster online friends and shouted, “I LOVE THIS TEA AND ALWAYS WILL!” I’M GOING TO ORDER ENOUGH TO HAVE MANY HAPPY MOMENTS! The choco, orange, earthy…rich and creamy dessertlish drunken wonderful blissfulness! Well,up this goes to 100%

Well, I keep going back to see if I am going to change my mind about this tea. After 4 tasteings using Spring Water to brew…a 2 cup pot…using 1 TB and letting the tea steep for about 5 min. also with sugar instead of honey or agave and cream instead of milk. I love this tea!!! The roasting of the leaves is just enough to give a subtle smoke like the experience of chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. The mocha note with orange is just and not cloying. This is not too girly. Solid robust flavor.

DID NOT LIKE. Did I make that clear enough? To be fair to the tea, i’m not a fan of chocolate and orange mixed together. I’ll even send it to someone if they want a 50g bag. blech. It’s just to Orangy for me.

This is AMAZING. It smells just like chocolate oranges. It even tastes like it too!

I wasn’t sure about this at first because I am a bit put off by pu-erh but I can’t even taste much of it at all. I steeped it for 3 minutes, and the package says 4-6. Or I might actually like it, but I’m pretty sure it’s covered by the awesome flavors. I am definitely getting a lot of orange mixed with chocolate. It seriously even tastes like those chocolate oranges.

I’m pretty sure I’m not supposed to want one now. But it’s for research purposes, of course.

I am easily persuaded by postings of recipes.

Okay for a second can I just gush about where I live? It gets a lot of flack for outsourcing basically everything (ie garbage/recycling pickup is not done by the city so residents contract a private company to do it, 911 operations is shared with another city). Yesterday, one of the red lights was out on my street, so I downloaded an app the city has to report it and now I have learned it keeps me notified of all the steps along the way to it being fixed. It almost makes me want to stop using Atlanta as my location for everything. Almost.

Okay, recipe. http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidstea/7166379689/in/set-72157629044618825/ This sounded good right about now, so I decided to make it. Except it turns out coconut milk (at least the kind in a carton for milk replacement purposes) does not froth very well. It’s just sort of like, yay let’s make giant bubbles! And that’s about it.

It’s still really good in here. I used more milk than necessary and probably more chocolate syrup than necessary to make chocolate milk, but right now I just really needed chocolate. Someone in my building really likes loud music and I can hear it so perhaps my need to make this recipe was assisted by the need to make more noise by frothing milk…you didn’t hear it from me.

I pretty much had a falling out with this tea because it just wasn’t tasting as good anymore to me hot. But oh man I am loving it this way. Despite what probably sounds like my best efforts to just make chocolate milk with a bit of tea in it, the tea is definitely present. I guess that’s the good part about the puerh, I’m pretty sure if this was a plain old black tea, I would have made chocolate milk. And the orange flavor is still discernable.

I must have like 15g left and at this point I’m not sure if I will buy it again, but I’ll enjoy it while I have it.

I’m so glad this is permanent now because chocolate oranges are way too good to be relegated to one time of year. Besides, legitimate chocolate oranges are kind of overpriced now and this really tastes just like one anyway.

I have two awful assignments to do for tomorrow and I decided I would drink this instead. It’s far less maddening and doesn’t ask stupid questions.

Ok, I steeped it a bit longer this time around and I can smell the puerh. It’s kind of offputting but then the chocolate is like “I am still here to save the day!” I think I’m going to stick with 4 minutes from now on. I think it tasted more like chocolate oranges then.

smells amazing, just like a chocolate orange. i have dreams of using this tea in a chocolate chip orange muffin recipe (steeping the tea in the milk first).
i was going to save this one for christmas morning, but then if i fall in love with it, what if it’s sold out by then!
well, lets see…
definitely an orange flavour with chocolate underneath. truthfully the first pu’erh tea i’ve tried, so i can’t honestly say whether or not i can taste it over the chocolate and orange.
overall a nice, interesting seasonal tea, but i can’t see myself stocking up on it

Update:
trying again because i am just so in love with the idea of this tea… and it would be safe to love the tea itself now since DAVIDs made it permanent. (1/2 tbsp, 3 min 15 sec, 200F) playing with steep times to try and figure this one out. there’s that distinct pu’erh flavour that i don’t get in any of my other teas (i now know what it should taste like ;) )
but really i’m still not getting as much chocolate as i would like, though what is there compliments the tea base really nicely.
i don’t know. i think it’s just not meant to be. though i made the cupcakes and they were delicious, so maybe if i end up getting a bit more it will be strictly a ‘baking tea’?
we’ll see…

Oh my. Oh my. Oh my.
I had high hopes for this tea, because it smells fantastic. And it absolutely does not disappoint. I have never had such a deliciously chocolatey tea. I find that the orange and the chocolate balance perfectly in this blend, and neither feels more dominant than the other.
For me, I’m first hit with the deep taste of dark chocolate, followed by a grittiness that I suspect is the puerh, with final notes of orange/citrus that linger well past swallowing.
It is my first puerh so I can’t comment on that, but this tea has skyrocketed to the top of my faves from DT.

There is something so inherently Christmas-y about a dark chocolate and orange combination. With midterms over and final exams (and Christmas!) on the horizon, I was definitely in the mood for a little pre-emptive Christmas cheer :)

Now, I’m not usually a fan of chocolate teas. In fact, before today, I had never found a chocolate tea that would ever entice me to take more than a sip. Most of them remind me of Sharpies, in some strange way. However, this chocolate flavour worked really well with the other flavours in the tea. The orange peel imparted the citrus note that kept the chocolate from feeling too heavy, and the pu’erh added a wonderful earthiness to the brew. It really brings you back to a sweet orange and chocolate treat you might find in our Christmas stocking, but without the cloying sweetness and the subsequent sugar coma. And as always, the pu’erh was great after what was, perhaps, an overindulgence at the dinner table :p

Overall, a nice holiday tea to be enjoyed when you want a little guilt-free indulgence :)

Hummm….I like that! In french, that tea is called “Douceur de Noël”. That name is perfect since that tea is sweet and creamy. It was my first pu’erh tea. It makes me feel like Christmas holidays even if it’s a “November Rain” day! :)
It’s a tea for those who like chocolate and/or orange teas.

Absolutely amazing. I think I will be dreaming about this one until I can have my next cup tomorrow. This smells exactly like Terry’s Chocolate oranges and tastes a heck of a lot like them too! I honestly have to say that this is the most chocolatey tasting DavidsTea I’ve tried yet.

Must must must!

(Also, not bad upon re-steeping!)

Yum. I didn’t catch so much of the chocolate, just a hint that is more pu’erh than chocolate, but the orange was delicious. I wouldn’t call it a Terry’s Chocolate Orange, but it is a yummy orange pu’erh. A bit dark for this late in the evening, but would make a good morning wake-up tea. Maybe under the Christmas tree on a lazy winter morning . . .

My first time trying this since the rebranding as Chocolate Orange. I will review it in a moment, but first, gather ’round, people of Steepster, for storytime!

So DT’s new spring collection came out yesterday and, unsurprisingly, we went to sample them all. Yes, all. We are completionists that way. A usual busy day at our local, and they were having some computer troubles. Long story short, my debit card was double-charged, which I didn’t figure out until later when I tried to buy some delicious baked goods at the local bakery. Boo. I called the store and let them know what had happened, they told me to come in whenever, no problem.

Today, I amble up to the store and one of the girls (we call her Not Hipster Girl – they need to wear nametags!) is standing out front with a tray of samples. She gives me a big ol’ grin and says “Hey! Here to get that refund?” “. . . yes. Hi!”

Up to the counter I go, where Manager and Non-Asian Guy (who had been the one to help me yesterday) are standing. “Hey! So sorry about yesterday, totally my fault.” “Oh no, no, that’s okay, I don’t mind -” “Here, we want you to have 50g of one of the new spring teas, whatever you want. Let’s process that refund. Do you want anything to go?” Yes, 50g of tea and two free cups of tea because of a computer glitch. I cannot say how much I absolutely love DAVIDsTEA’s customer service. It’s just phenomenal, above and beyond any other retail experience I’ve had, tea-related or otherwise.

Anyway. Tea. This is the cup I got to go (the other being an iced Orange Blossom for my wife), my usual hot and black. I steeped it longer than I usually do pu’erhs and I’m actually glad that I did. It had such a rich warmth to it, I was actually kinda stunned for a moment. Just this amazingly complex chocolately taste, with all the shades of mustiness that pu’erhs hold. And then the zip of the orange citrus . . . I need to bump up the rating on this, and bring the small amount in our stash back to the forefront.

Drank this with Mom – yes! I got her to try looseleaf! And enjoy it! Her favourite flavour of anything is chocolate orange, so I thought this would be a great tea to coax her over to the dark side with. No luck yet, but I will keep trying.

So it was around Valentines and I realized that I needed some valentines-themed tea, to get my self into the spirit. So I went into DT on vday becuase they had a promo, spend 25$, get a sample of tea. So I went for it, this was one of my purchases. They were also sampling it that day, so I got to try it out before buying. I was intrigued. I had soem today also, with a morning snack.

Yummy. I felt like the chocolate blended really well with the earthiness of the pu’erh, and the hint of orange gave it a refreshing finish. I would definitely try this one again, maybe put it in the cupboard next tea-buying cycle :)

Initial impression- Smells like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange! Delicious! Looks pretty much as advertised- I see chocolate drops, orange peel, and pu’erh. I do wish there wasn’t artificial flavouring, but I’m not too picky about it. After brewing it still retains the wonderful bright orange scent tempered with the dark chocolate scent.
How I brewed it- In 94 degree water (as hot as the machine at work will go) water for six minutes in my fabulous Perfect Mug, I did not brew this with sweetener.
First sips- I only tasted a brief bit of pu’erh before the flavours hit my palette. The orange and chocolate mingle together nicely in this tea. Definitely something I’d buy again.
Would like to try it- with a touch of agave to brighten the flavours a touch or as a tea latte.
