Mango Diablo

Green Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Ay carumba

Meet mango with an attitude: this sweet and spicy blend of green tea, mango and red hot chili threads is irresistibly refreshing on ice. Mango and chili might seem like an unusual combination, but you can actually find it in sauces, salsas and salads everywhere from Thailand to Mexico. If you’re feeling adventurous, it makes for a seriously sinful cocktail with a splash of tequila and lime: exotic and fruity with a dash of fire.

Ingredients: Green tea, mango pieces, lily, chili peppers, chili threads, stevia.

Trader Joe’s has these amazing dried mango slices that are soooo juicy, and they roll them in cayenne pepper for the tastiest spicy/sweet combo I’ve ever had. I was kind of hoping that this tea would taste like that, and Krystaleyn sent me some in our swap! I’ve been wanting to try it for a while but there are so many teas I have to get through ;~;

This is a juicy tea, and has a really strong mango flavor. I did steep mine for extra long, because I’ve found that DAVIDsTEA blends tend towards the weaker side of things. There is a nice green tea flavor, but it’s not that strong—mostly this is just mango-y. The chili, though, is disappointingly lacking. I wanted spicy, and this really isn’t—there’s a bit of heat after the sip that lingers in your mouth, but it’s not spicy enough for my taste. There are really big chili threads in this blend so I thought I’d have more oomph. It’s tasty for sure, but I think the name is a little misleading… there’s definitely no Diablo in here!

Spicy. Mango… … …
Yep, that is all. No “tea”. Just overly spicy mango.
If you like a serious punch in your food, then this one might be for you.
However, the sample I had… it was so spicy that I couldn’t enjoy the other parts of the flavour. I like some spiciness in my food. In fact, I love me some jerk chicken or Tikka Masala. But those dishes are not ALL about the spicy. They have texture and other flavours.
Seriously, I think this should be labelled a tisane. Was there any camellia in there at all???
It might be interesting to cook with.

At first, I wasn’t too keen on trying this one, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to taste it. I actually love the Mexican treatment of mangoes with a bit of salt, lime juice and hot sauce. It’s sweet and tangy and hot and very refreshing! Hopefully, this tea will capture that deliciousness.

Brewed, it smells mostly like mango. I’m not sure what kind of green it is, but the savory aroma makes me thing Chinese. I could be wrong. The peppers might be messing with me. The taste of this is only lightly mango. I’m actually a bit disappointed in how light the mango flavor is. As you swallow, the spiciness burns a bit going down. Very nice! I happen to be a fan of spicy food. (One of my favorite snacks is toast with avocado and a healthy drizzle of sriracha) I would say that the spicy level here is just right for a tea. Hotter and you’d lose the mango. THis is a good balance. But again, this is coming form a spicy lover. I can imagine some people finding this too spicy. On the other hand, my spicy loving friend would probably enjoy this. :)

Overall, quite a nice tea. It’s different from any other tea I’ve tried but it’s very enjoyable. Next time, I think I’ll use more leaf to see if I can make the mango pop a little more. Maybe I’ll even try a bit of lime juice and sugar to make this taste more like that yummy Mexican mango thing!

Okay, my third attempt at this tea. Cold brewed it for a good 1.5 days and it is great cold brewed. The spiciness becomes minimal. It feels a bit more like fizziness than spiciness. The mango is there and the funky green tea is barely noticeable. Refreshing and interesting. Might make a good base for lemonade!

Had this again today. Liking it a lot less. The green tea base tastes totally off. I did make it stronger because I wanted a stronger mango flavor. I guess the flavors in this tea aren’t well balanced. sad.

This was a sample from one of the DAVIDsTEA orders we had. I thought I’d try it out despite Dylan’s dislike of mango. The last mango tea we had tasted more like pear, so it didn’t quite hit the mango hate button.

This does hit the mango hate button. It is very mango, mango, mango. Wait, let me say it again, MANGO! I like the chili follow up but I feel like I want more pepper less mango. The chili hits me in the throat and I want it to go, “Pow! I’m here!” on my tongue. I know there is green tea in here some where but I couldn’t say a thing about it.

Mango salsa in a cuppa. This is a fun, spicy blend, perfect as an AM wake-up – and a sinus wakeup! I love how the chili pepper complements the sweet mango flavor. I bet this would be great iced although I enjoyed my cup hot. Didn’t need to add any sweetener – which is perfect since I’m trying to cut back. The mango chunks are sweet enough.

This one is really fun. It’s spicy and sweet, and not too much of either. Using green tea as the base helps with the flavor profile – I can taste both distinctly. I’m using this as my wake-up cuppa. I barely slept last night thanks to migraines (one went away and then another took its place), so I need all the pick-me-up I can get today!

I have been Little Miss Over Caffeinated this week as I battled my chronic migraines to work on some fabulous writing projects at work. I’ve been drinking my holiday tea – Lil Lordy Lou – but opted for green tea this afternoon.

I really enjoy how spicy this can get. I steeped for over five minutes – way more than I usually steep a green tea – but this little tea is tough. It hung in there and produced a bouquet of juicy mango and spicy red hot chili accents.

And I’m not too jumpy, but still awake enough as the daily grind continues…

Yay we got to go to Dartmouth today, aka try not to die on the bridge and make paying the toll worth it by going to Lush and DavidsTea. :)

I brought my ice tea cup thing (yay I remembered!) and got this tea to go.
The mango flavour is spot on! sweet, fresh, juicy mango – full of flavour. The spice – wow. The kick hits you at the end of the sip – for me it’s even a bit too strong – but spice lovers would looove it. This is the kind of spice I wish was in the Chocolate Chili – I think it would go perfectly with something rich and deep like chocolate.

I can taste the green base – it gives the tea a certain texture that I think works perfectly. If it wasn’t for acid reflux plus killing my throat with coughs last time I got sick for over a month, I don’t think the tea would burn as much as it is haha. I’m getting the spice pretty strong at the back of my throat, a wee bit too much for comfort, so I don’t think I’ll buy any – but I will enjoy this cup!

Very unique – nice kick and a great treat. I think it would be great with tequila and some mexican food.

I don’t know why I never noted that I only had enough for a mug of this one. I would have probably tried it way sooner then!

Out of curiosity does anyone live near an Earth Fare? There’s one here in Chattanooga and I’m very curious, especially because they have amazing email coupons. I just signed up yesterday and I have one for a free chicken or box of veggie burgers, two free pineapples, and $1 each jelly, peanut butter, cookies, crackers, and something else. I’m sure I can’t use them all at once but man I wish there was one of these by me! I’m guessing because in Atlanta there’s a ton of Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s they don’t think they have a market. I’ll probably check it out tomorrow or Friday and hope I don’t find a bunch of stuff to take back with me.

Wow…this one is a bit too spicy for a tea. I love the pepper mango one from Gurman’s, it has the right balance and you can taste green tea. This one, I really can’t taste tea. There’s maybe a little bit of this graininess to it, but I don’t know where that’s coming from.

I love spicy food, but this is just unpleasant.

I’m going to let it cool down before I give up on it, it already seems like it becomes more tolerable as it cools. It still has a bite but it doesn’t cover your tongue and make it feel like you can’t taste anything else like it does hot.

The dry tea smells quite interesting for this one. Like mango juice, but with a chili pepper overtone which borders a touch too closely on sweet pepper for me.

Steeped, I mostly smell mango with a small, almost imperceptible, hit of chili.

Ooh! Different! Mango with a definite chili kick. Not overpowering to me personally, but quite balanced, actually. Like Indigobloom however, I can’t really taste the green tea. I have to assume it’s there, because I put quite a bit of it in, and maybe I’m tasting a bit of lingering green tea flavour, but this does come off as a bit more of a tisane, for sure.

Unfortunately, the chili flavour is edging a bit too much towards sweet peppers (as I previously mentioned), and given my intense dislike of sweet peppers, that pretty much means I won’t be buying this one again. I may in fact try to hand off the rest of my packet. I definitely appreciate this tea for what it is though!

I decided it was time to clean up my DavidsTea stash. Drink up the second cup of samples I don’t like (to give them a second chance), and categorize things a little. So here’s the first attempt!

I didn’t like Mango Diablo the first time I tried it, mostly due to the sweet pepper taste which I loathe, although I did feel it met the mark in terms of a mangoey, spicy green. I brewed up only a half cup (so I don’t have to suffer through it too much if it’s as I remember), and so I can send the final cup’s worth off to Amanda (so this is pretty much a sipdown). I wish I could refer to my previous note while writing this one, but apparently Steepster is down right now, so I’m stuck writing this in Word. Sigh.

The aroma is sweet from the mangoes and spicy from the chili pepper threads. There must be a hint of a bell pepper-ish aroma coming out too, because I don’t enjoy this smell. Upon sipping, there’s first a bit of a sweet taste before BAM! the chili spice hits you. I actually quite enjoy this spice level, but would greatly prefer it mixed with chocolate. Really, in my opinion, it’s not all that spicy, but I can see some people objecting (even though it’s explicitly stated that this blend is spicy!) The mango does blend in nicely, and the green tea lurks in the background, clearly offering a base for what would otherwise be a watery tea, but not really coming out in the flavour.

Like I thought earlier, I personally think this blend is a success. I just hate bell peppers and feel like I can taste them in here, which makes me dislike the tea.

[Hey, on the plus side, since I’m writing this in Word, nobody has to sit through my repeated ‘ETA’s as I re-steep teas, because I’m just tacking them on in here! Always a positive side to everything…]

Second infusion, 82C/5 min almost smells a touchy perfumey, like roses. Which makes me gag a bit, because my stomach is already a bit irritated with me for whatever reason, and I have been poking around samples all evening to figure out what all I have, and of course I’ve opened multiple rose-scented packets… ick. Anyhow, the spice is here at about the same degree as previously, although the mango flavour is a little lighter, and there’s perhaps more icky bell pepper flavour. Decent re-steep, in my opinion. But I don’t want to drink any more of this, so that’s it for me!

I tried this one with trepidation, having decided that for me, chili and tea don’t blend in my favour. And yet I have to try everything that hits the wall, so I trotted home with my 6g and brewed it up.

Both dry and brewed, it smells absolutely amazing. The mango smell is dominant and is strong enough that I started to get excited. A good mango tea is delicious and this was full of potential.

As I sipped I first got a mouthful of mango, and damn but it was delicious. Fruity and sweet and perfect. And then the chili kicked in, and yup, it packed a punch. If I liked chilis in tea this would be an amazingly perfect tea for me. But sadly I want this one without the kick. If it was just the intense mango I’d be ALL over it for summer.

Rating it based on how well the tea lived up to expectations. I’d rate it lower for my personal preferences but the tea is actually delicious if that’s your thing, and I don’t feel it is fair to rate it down because I didn’t like that it met the description.

I really like this one. Really, really like this one. Nom. The juicy sweetness of the mango with a kick of chili? Yes, please! I haven’t tried it iced yet, but I am very eager to. I think this might be worth a tin to me.

Sip down #1

The dry notes smell like mango candy. Once steeped it smells like mango and peppers. Maybe this will be the first tea to deliver the spice. I love how you can see the chili strings and seeds in the leaves.
The first hit on your tongue is peppers, not spicy, but peppers. As the tea hits the back of your tongue and your throat you get the spice from the peppers. Oh deliciously spicy peppers. The hit of mango is very light and lingers on the tongue.

I am so glad I finally found a tea that promises the heat. This is going back into my cupboard. The only downfall of this tea is that I feel the mango could come out more strongly.

You’d want to avoid this tea if you’re prone to heart burn

EDIT: as this cools to about room temp, the first taste on the tongue is of mango and the spice looses some of its power.

The mango is really good….but I am a wimp when it comes to spicy food, so I found it too spicy for me.
However, it delivers what it promises.
I will still give this a fairly good rating since it really is good.

Hrmmm… not really sure what to say about this one.

The pepper on this is interesting. It hits my throat well before it hits my tongue, which doesn’t seem to make a lick of sense.

It’s very mango, which is unfortunate, as I’m not very fond of mango. Ashmanra once sent me a sample of a pepper mango (I can’t remember from where!), and it tasted more pear-like, and it was fantastic. This one does not taste more pear-like. Due to my general displeasure at mango, I don’t think it’s quite fair for me to rate this.

Unlikely that I’ll buy this one again ;)

This one, thankfully, really satisfies my anticipation that it would be 1) interesting and 2) spicy-sweet. It’s flavourful, and I really like the mango flavouring DT uses. Each sip starts off juicy mango and ends with a little kick (I went with only 2 minutes for this on the suggestion of the employee who sold it to me). The chili is just right, boldness-wise.

But, I don’t often find myself in the mood for spicy teas. I like them, but don’t usually want to make them after that first try. I don’t see myself actually reaching for this too often, but it does what it does well.

I have learned something about myself—if the tea has chili in it, I will buy it. Even if it doesn’t have anything else I like in it. Chilies are apparently a big selling point to me.

The dry tea looks beautiful and smells delicious. Those bright chili strings are just so pretty and the mango smell is lovely and intense. If I was willing to share this tea, I might break it out when I have company just because of the pretty factor but I’m not willing so I won’t.

I brewed this tea hot because I have the flu and iced tea when you’re sick is not fun. Hot this tea is all mango with a nice background of green tea. I barely got any chili heat which was a bit disappointing because I like the chili kick. I did find the mango flavor to be very pleasant and intense but I wanted the chili heat. However, I happened to get distracted and the tea cooled off a bit to lukewarm and I was surprised that the chili intensified as the tea cooled. It was the perfect balance of mango sweetness with the bite of the chili.

The next time I brew this one I will probably steep it longer than the recommended 5 minutes. I like my tea hot but still want the kick of the chili. I did love this tea either way.

Courtney

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this one but I’m enjoying it. It’s a nice mango flavour with a little kick of spicy at the end. Much better than mango madness where I didn’t even taste mango.

Update: Not so great cooled. At all! I’ll be sticking to hot for this one. I wish I could find a genuine MANGO tea though. Real mango taste, lots of it haha!

And now for something completely different.

Today is a grey and dismal day…doomed to be a boring Saturday I needed something to spice it up.It’s hard to describe the scent it’s definitely Mango but it’s got a whole other dimension to it.
Long red chili threads that make it hard to measure out but making it quite neat looking.

Once steeped it smells heavier not really spicy though which is kind of disappointing.

it’s kind of nice it’s fully mango but it has a spicy background. It’s a very mild drink though for what is promised.I suppose you could put more in and steep for longer and get the full impact but it might get bitter that way. It’s nice and has potential for a good icing.
I think I will trade this to my bff since her hubby loves the greens maybe this will be more up his and her alley.
I’m stuck in the middle about it at the end of the day.No Diablo maybe just a light sprinkling of spiciness.

I love spicy food. After reading comments, I was looking forward to try this one.

It’s a great blend. It smells very fruity, but the taste is not too overwhelming. It does pack some heat, but in my opinion nothing anyone can’t handle. As others said, the taste is mostly mango, but you will feel the heat going down your throat. The feeling lasts for a few seconds only.

I’m looking for something spicier, but this one will certainly do for now. Perfect after a good steak or anything grilled on the BBQ. Recommended.

Tried this as an in-store sample. Can’t do it. All I tasted was the chile as it kicked me in the face. Won’t revisit.
