Cherry Cola (organic)

Black Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Sweet memories
Remember trying cherry cola as a kid? Nothing beats the feeling of holding that ice cold bottle and knowing it’s all yours to enjoy. Sweet, bubbly and tartly fruity, it’s everything we love in a drink. And with this invigorating, cherry-spiked black tea, we’re pretty sure we captured the taste straight from the soda fountain. Try a cup and see if we got the feeling right, too. We love it on ice with a little agave.

Ingredients: Organic: black tea, cherries, stevia.

This came out of my “try this already!” box. And since everything else I had set to brew up tonight (aside from re-steeps) was an unflavoured tea, I felt like a bit of flavouring… although this wouldn’t have been my first choice given the negative reviews of it I’ve seen.

To start with, the aroma from the dry tea is a bit offputting. I would agree that the aroma is reminiscent of cola in a… chemically sort of way. But, I don’t like cola (and especially not cherry cola) to begin with, so who knows, maybe it smells normal to all those pop lovers! Brewed up it smells pretty similar, though not as bad as I was expecting.

The flavour, though, is where it massively crashes and burns. There is just something WRONG with the initial taste. It’s quite strong, and chemically, and truly terrible. Bleeeech. I’ve had seriously oversteeped greens that are more palatable than this!! I’m finding that the aftertaste isn’t completely terrible; it does remind me of coke, but unfortunately, I’m not willing to drink another terrible sip in order to achieve the aftertaste. I was contemplating trying this one with sweetener, but I think that would be a waste of sugar.

My advice? Avoid this tea at all costs unless you have an affinity for drinking chemicals. I’ve complained about flavouring oils and chemical flavours before, but no tea I’ve tried has been quite this bad (ok, other than the vomit-flavoured Pina Colada from Adagio. I would drink this over that.)

Down the drain this goes! Perhaps I’ll run up and grab a Persimmon Tree or Whispering Pines sample that I have yet to try, since I’m still craving something flavoured.

This tea has gotten some really low marks from the Steepster community. Therefore, I had low expectations but was holding out hope nonetheless.

There is a surprisingly potent aroma and flavor to this one. But honestly, it does taste like Cherry Coke in my opinion. The cherry is prominent, as is that classic Coca-Cola flavor: overly sweetened cola nut with a caramel aftertaste. I’m drinking it hot and sweetened by Truvia. It would probably be more enjoyable and Coke-like as an iced tea.

However, just because this tastes like a tea version of Cherry Coke doesn’t mean that I like it. In general, Coca-Cola upsets my stomach since I stopped drinking soda a few years ago. This tea is similar. Although I don’t necessarily feel sick, it doesn’t make me feel 100% right as rain either.

My body anticipates feeling ill just by tasting the flavor of Coke it seems. So although it was fun to try a new tea, I think I’ll avoid this one in the future. Thanks to Kittenna for the chance to try it!

When I first saw this tea I was really intrigued, especially since I am a former soda addict (specifically Wild Cherry Pepsi!)

I logged on to Steepster and checked the reviews of this tea (my ritual before posting my own), and wow – this tea got a lot of negativity. Now I feel kinda bad for it (is it possible to feel bad for a tea?). I cold-brewed this for 12 hours and had high hopes after the delicious Root Beer. I took a sip this morning and … meh. There’s definitely cherry flavor in there, but it’s really just a mishmash of stuff and not working at all. One of the problems, I think, is the stevia. It just gives it this weird sort-of-sugary aftertaste. It’s supposed to be sweet, but it’s not. It’s just not working, at all. The tea is certainly drinkable, but it’s not as enjoyable as I was hoping it would be. I think the tea might have been better had DT just left it off.

But, as I started to feel bad for the tea, I thought I would try to see what I could do up the rating. Adding honey definitely helped, but I really don’t like adding sweetner to my tea if I can help it. I also decided to add some seltzer. I don’t think that worked either. It was just not working at all. I don’t even know if it’s worth finishing.
When I got this order at David’sTea last month, I didn’t realize this tea was so new. I have a feeling this one won’t be staying around.

So in conclusion, this is probably a tea you should pass on. This is exactly why I’m glad I bought a sample size of this at DT and didn’t make a full order online. Sometime you win and sometimes you lose.

oh my bloody he’ll. Steepster at my note.

anywho, I’ve had this forever and am now trying it in hopes of cleaning up my stash.
I don’t hate this like everyone else, I don’t love it, but quite enjoy it. it reminds me of those pop bottle gummies.

I put the rest in the fridge to try it cold.
as my cup cooled to room temp, it wasn’t quite as good as it is hot.
Also there is a kind of strange taste at the end of the sip. maybe the stevia?

I am so, so sad. You all know me. You know I’m a DavidsTea fangirl, through and through. I will try everything they put out, but this…this is horrible. It starts with cherry cola taste, but then switches into horrible musty, dusty flavor. The aftertaste is cherry cola, which is especially cruel because I keep thinking “maybe it’s not that bad” and I take another sip. Yup, it’s that bad. I’m glad we only got 10g and I used all 10 to cold steep a pot.

I rarely have a problem with tea. Black, green, white, red, herbal, it takes a lot for a tea to disappoint me. I can count on one hand the teas in the past that I have brewed then dumped, Forbidden Fruit, Jumpy Monkey, and The Skinny amoung them. Sadly I now have to add this one to the list and I’m probably just reiterating what the other reviews have already said…

This tasted really, really strange to me. Initially it tasted like the tea was musty or fermented, and AFTERTASTE started to taste like Cherry Cola, but first you’ve got to get past the strange flavours. I tried it both hot (blech), iced (Cherry Cola flavour came through a little more) and iced with sweetened condensed milk (addiction much?). The only tolerable way to drink this was the latter… and even then I really had to force myself.

Sigh. Now I’m sad because I was ever so hopeful that this tea would be amazing…

Will Work For Tea

This is the first tea I tried from the Traveling Tea Box (A)! It’s been on my shopping list since it became available a few months ago.

The smell from the bag was pretty off-putting, which was surprising. It was pretty stinky!

The initial taste was odd as well. Perhaps it was too hot when I first tried it, but it tasted like it smelled. After letting it cool for a bit, it started to taste like cola and cherry.

This isn’t as great as I thought it would be, but happy that I was able to try it without having to buy 50 grams of it. :)

Just ok. I wish I had bought the package of Pink Flamingo that I got to go from David’s Tea this morning. I’ve been craving a cherry tea and this one smelled pretty good. The taste does not match up to the smell though. There is a chemical taste to it. I will finish what I got of it, but I won’t buy it again.

OMGsrsly

I got this tea to make popsicles, and I’m afraid I’m not sold. The smell when brewing is heavy on the anise, and it’s interesting that I can pick that out of the “cola flavour”.

I brewed 1/2 cup double strength, added 1 tsp sugar and about 1/3 cup soy creamer. Chilled overnight, then poured into my Zoku popsicle maker today.

There’s something wrong with the flavour. I can see where it’s going, but blech.. It’s weirdly musty and spicy, and honestly I’d rather have an organic/natural full-sugar cola mixed with creamer and frozen. :/

Dry Leaf Nose: Cola and cherries on top of a rich black tea.

Liquor: Dark and clear with the sweet aroma of cherry cola.

Flavour: Tea takes a back seat, but is not overpowered by the cherry cola notes.

All I can say is “thank God I only bought 50 g of it”.

It was recommended to me after the guy working at the store overheard me telling my boyfriend that I loved the root beer float. He said if I liked that one I’ll like this one a lot more. Really? I can like something more than root beer float? Colour me intrigued.

The result: all lies. Blasphemous, ugly lies. I wouldn’t go as far as saying this tea is terrible, but it is CERTAINLY not good. An awful aftertaste (stevia?), and not a good taste, either. I couldn’t finish my cup.

I’m going to try adding it to my mate. Hopefully it takes some of the grossness away…

EDIT: Tried again yesterday afternoon. I thought maybe my taste buds were cranky in the morning because I was also hungry, and so weren’t giving me an accurate “reading” on the tea. Let’s just say they were being generous. I won’t lower my number rating, but it should probably be more like 10/100. Grossness. Anyone want about 42 g of Cherry Cola tea?!

Thanks Finn88! Well the first time I tried this it was waaaayyy strong. So I cut the brewing time and I’m hoping it’s a little better. Well it’s a little better, but it still has a weird aftertaste. I can get the cola and cherry flavor but the aftertaste is just breaking the deal for me :[ Maybe this will have to be tried as an ice tea or something. More experimenting is to be done! I’m determined to like this tea.

This is such an odd blend that I was intrigued, and I had to pick it up. It was either this or the root beer one, but the cherry cola smelled better and I bought a tin. It wasn’t worth it, but that’s what I get for being irresponsible and impulsive!

Drinking it plain, this tea offers little flavor. I don’t really notice the sweetener and it doesn’t have much to offer but a weak cherry flavor. I added a bunch of milk and sugar and it didn’t really help.

It’s okay as an iced tea. It’s even better as an iced tea with milk and sugar. Or with rum.

I just want to drink it so that I can empty the tin and fill that up with up. Next time, I’ll pass.

I bought this in the summer when I was new to tea and thought I could judge a tea by its aroma and that I needed to buy 50g or more. I’m still trying to drink all those teas. :p

I think I still have 20g less, and it’s actually worse than I remember. All I can taste is the stevia. Hey! DavidsTea!!! I’m perfectly capable of adding my own sweetener if I want any.

But then what else should I expect from tea named after pop.

So, I ordered this one online. It sounded really good.
I get it and open it up… and unfortunately the smell of this one was overwhelming, but not in a good way. From a distance it smells it good tho. It’s just up close where it smells funny to me.
Taste… I couldn’t do it. The funny smell that I had smelling it up close transfered to the taste. It smells too artificial or something, so that’s the taste that I had. I took like three sips and had to toss it. It tastes too funny to me. I didn’t get any cherry taste at all.
I really wanted to like this one, but I can’t do it. :(

Smells exactly like those cola gummy bottles but spicier.

As always with a DT black tea I steeped less for shorter.

First taste and it’s like a very very very light Licorice tea with just a light sweetness from the Stevia. It’s not unpleasant but it’s not great either..it just doesn’t know what to be..Maybe it’d be better iced but I’m not really invested in trying it again.

EDIT: I bumped my rating up a smidgen after experimenting with this tea. The second brew tastes much better than the first. Cold tastes better than hot. Adding a half teaspoon of brown sugar also brings out the cherry cola taste (which really shouldn’t be a surprise considering how much sugar there is in soda, but I prefer to have my tea without adding sugar).
ORIGINAL NOTE: I must say that although I am a lover of David’s tea. This Organic Cherry Cola tea is quite disappointing for me. I loved cherry cola, whenever I was allowed to have it as a child, so I was excited to possibly find an alternative that I can enjoy that isn’t packed with sugar and carbonation. When I took my first sip, I thought I did something wrong, but looking at the other reviews, I’m not alone with getting a muddied fermented flavor. I occasionally get hints of the cherry cola flavor, but it is overpowered by what I might best describe as an earthy(?) taste…No wait, not earthy…more like a musty/dirt-ish taste? (Not sure if that description will help anyone but me – yeh…should just stick with the adjective “fermented” I suppose). I have to say that I tend to prefer green and white teas over black teas, so my palette was already biased against this tea even before the first sip. It’s not horrible, but I’m glad I only bought 14g. With all the other amazing options at David’s I wouldn’t recommend this one.

I’ve been trying to fight off a cold for the last little while, but it looks like it finally got me ~ drat! Since my sense of taste and smell are not at their best today I figured I’d get rid of the last bit of this tea that I never really liked.

UGH!

Why does this taste so bad. There is nothing too wacky listed in the ingredients, so what gives? The first few sips are the worst. It leaves that gross coating in my mouth that makes me want to pressure wash my tongue :P

Booooooo!

Lowering my rating

p.s. If you didn’t already notice, sometimes I get a little cranky when I’m sick ~ lol!

I thought I had to try this tea, just from the name and the description. My hopes were not too high after reading some of the reviews here.

On first smell of the dry tea, it definitely has a chery cola smell, but it is almost medicinal and definitely artificial. It did remind me of those sour cola gummy candies.

On brewing, the liqour smelled the same as the dry tea, but the taste was horrible. It had a faint cherry taste and very medicinal. Very flat tasting. Left an astringent after taste. Not much change with adding a litte, and then a lot of sweetener.

Not sure if I will finish my sample of this one. I may try it with the addition of some vanilla, but am not holding my breath.

I thought I had to give this one just one more try. I am glad I got just a small amount, still have a little bit left though.
I added in some vanilla and about a half teaspoon of rock sugar. It helped make the tea more drinkable but still not good. To me it has a chemical taste to it. With the addition of vanilla, the aftertaste is much more cola than the actual tea.
It was suggested to me to try this tea iced and mixed with carbonated water or soda water. Not sure if I will try that, but I will keep you posted.

This smells overwhelmingly of artificial flavoring. I don’t know what I was expecting, but this tasted like cough syrup and Grey Flannel cologne. Normally I drink my tea straight, but I tried this with some sweetener and it came out slightly more palatable when hot, but once it cooled down, somehow it was worse.

This is the first tea purchase I actively regret making.

Yuck! I found that this tea was disgusting. It started out with a weird cherry-cola taste, then it turned to a disgusting aftertaste. I had a couple of sips and i had to dump it. i couldn’t stand the taste. Sorry David.

Color me impressed! This is cherry cola to a tee! Amazing! I tried it in store on ice on a boiling hot day. Very refreshing. It’s sweet and cherry-licious. Keep up the good work David’s! <3
