Guayusa Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Jungle fever
We are seriously passionate about guayusa around here, and we couldn’t be more excited to spread the word. Not only does it pack an incredible burst of energy, it’s also deliciously smooth, never bitter, and lightly sweet. Plus it’s steeped in over 2000 years of Amazonian tradition and legend. To learn more about this wonder-herb, a bunch of the DAVIDsTEA staff went down to Ecuador to check out the guayusa farms, meet the workers and even harvest leaves for tea. Who knows – one of us might have even plucked this very batch.

Ingredients: organic guayusa

So I have just returned from the mall, and I am beat. Note to self: never go shopping on a long weekend Saturday. I have a lot of work to get done tonight too, so I thought I’d finally bust out my guayusa. This is my first experience with it, I have been a bit nervous about the caffeine buzz, especially because this is straight guayusa, not in a blend. But here we go!

The dry leaves are nice and grassy smelling. I didn’t really know how long to steep for, so I did the wimpy end of the scale at 4 minutes. The liquor brews up a murky green, reminds me of a river, maybe the Amazon! :P and yes I totally am getting that jungle feel, with the color and the smell. It is a very leafy, green, grassy smell, and there’s also a hint of sweet. I tried pouring this into my clear mug to fully see the color and sniffed the empty mug and there was a lovely sugary sweet scent to it!

As for the taste, it is very green tasting, definitely getting a grassy flavor out of this one. It is actually reminding me a bit of straight green rooibos! I think it’s the hint of sugar in the aftertaste. Oh, and this feels very refreshing to drink as well.

Overall, it’s not bad at all. I would really like to try some blends with this as well! Not bad, although I’m not sure if I would get more than my sample of it, that remains to be decided. So far it is pretty tasty though!

ETA – I can feel myself slowly regaining energy, which I like! This also becomes very smooth and easy to drink once it cools, and the feeling of refreshment grows. Very nice, and happy I tried this tea!

Today I decided to try mixing 1 tsp of this with 1 tsp of cocomint cream, as I saw that jessiwrites did this last week or so with excellent results. And I must say, this is really awesome! It produces just the right flavor that cocomint cream needed to not be as sugary sweet, instead, it is fresher and i much prefer it. I’m going to have to mix guayusa with a few more uncaffeinated teas! :)

This was the last tea to grace my glass branch mug from DAVIDsTEA, it broke shortly after finishing this cup. :( well at least it was a tasty cup! I am liking guayusa so far, very fresh and veggie like, and I find it doesn’t have as noticeable of a buzz as when I drink mate, which is not a bad thing. I also like the rainforest feeling I get when I drink this. See previous notes :)

The leaves smell awesome!
I am having the worst most fibro-tacular day moving someone into a new house. Serious energy is in order, so I’m really putting this to the test.
Brewed up this smells really grassy – it’s actually really similar to wheatgrass shots, which I love.
It tastes like… wheatgrass! No, really, it has those deep chlorophyll notes to it. It has no bitter aftertaste, and actually doesn’t have much of a flavor at all, aside from the “green” tastes. I like that about this though – If I’m drinking something for energy, I just want a quick “zing!” rather than something super flavorful or cloying.
It’s actually pretty refreshing.

DAVIDsTEA

Dry Leaf Nose: Full, fresh and herb-based aroma with a light hint of sweet earth and some smokiness for depth.

Liquor: Earthy green liquor with some cloudiness at times, most often clean. Full, herb aroma with some earth notes and a sweet finish.

Flavour: Full bodied liquor with a natural sweetness and a robust body. Complex and sweet herb notes layered with an earthy quality, reminiscent of the jungles in which the guayusa is grown. The moist air of the jungle is brought to the cup.

This tastes like the rainforest! That’s what I tweeted at DavidsTea. I’m really enjoying this one. Very natural tasting. I could see this being either a love it or hate it things for some people for sure.

I’m enjoying everything about this one. The smell, the taste, even the dark green colour it brews up. I’ll definitely be moving this to the permanent collection.

This was perfect for my drive to school. Second day, second exam. Now I feel as though I’ve just returned from the jungle haha.

Update: This one gets the upgrade to permanent collection. Just filled a tin!

I mixed equal parts of Guayusa and Luscious Watermelon for my morning tea today. I’m just sipping away at it now and it’s great!

The sweetness of the Luscious Watermelon really balances out the earthiness of the Guayusa. Guayusa continually amazing me with it’s flexibility and deliciousness.

Happy Easter everyone!

Update April 5/13: I chose Guayusa with Copabanana this morning. This may be the best mix yet. I want to love Copabanana more than I actually do and this mix just makes it for me. I’m tempted to pick up some more for the sole purpose of mixing it with Guayusa. The Amish cinnamon bread I’m enjoying with my tea for breakfast probably isn’t hurting either haha.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Update: Tried this as both a 1:1 and 1:2 ratio for Copabanana. I ’d say the 1:1 ratio is tastier. These teas work so well together in both balancing and bringing out the best flavours in each other.

So I’ve been mixing Guayusa with different teas over the last few days with great success. Bamboozled and Guayusa was quite delicious.

Today I have an upset stomach and I have a late night ahead. With this in mind, I paired 2 parts David’s Guayusa with 1 part The Killer’s Vanilla. Guayusa to stay awake and mint to settle my stomach. Best of both worlds!

Well I got absolutely nothing done over reading break. Not a single thing. And I had a rough night for sleeping last night so I feel like a zombie this lovely Monday morning.

Guayusa to the rescue. So now I’m sitting in my morning biology lecture, which I normally love, sipping my guayusa, as I watch the clock until I go home again.

I found a neat recipe for sweet coconut guayusa that I will try later on as well. I’ll update to let you know how it goes :)

Update: I tried out the sweet coconut guayusa recipe and it was pretty tasty but the scent of it really turned me off. I find it difficult difficult when I’m sipping away at something and the scent is right there in my face.

Here’s the recipe if anyone else would like to try: http://www.guayusatea.com/preparation/

Note to self: don’t ever make a 1000ml teapot of this again. Too. Much. Caffeine. AHHH!

Holy broccoli! 24 hours, 24 pages written, 2 essays! Like a boss!

I bow before thee, Guayusa, giver of the productive sleepless nights! Where would I be without you?

(plus, you taste great!)

Yum. I am a fan of guayusa.

I needed a bit of a boost before I have to photograph this concert tonight, so I mixed some guayusa with a bit of Santa’s Secret, for a little peppermint flavor. It was quite delicious, and I am hoping that with the guayusa and the black tea, I’ll be able to keep my eyes open behind my camera tonight.

I’ve been super busy and also kind of depressed and avoiding being on my computer in general, because I’ve been actively trying to not spend time doing nothing.

But… I have missed logging my teas and chatting on Steepster, so I’m going to try to ignore my shitty feelings and focus on things that make me happy. Like tea! And Guayusa. Especially mixed with a bit of Santa’s Secret. Still, one of my favorite combinations. Yum.

I drink this pretty much every day, and the only reason I continue to log it is because I try to mix it with something new every time.

Today, I blended it with Lemon Lime Cream Tart. I recommend that you all do this as soon as possible. It was delicious.

Guayusa + Santa’s Secret = happy Jessi. That is all.

Yep, just going to keep drinking this and posting about how awesome it is.

Courtney suggested blending it with Copabanana, so I gave that a shot this morning. Obviously, I’m going to need more Copabanana, because that was amazing. Guayusa seriously makes everything else taste better.

Today’s morning Guayusa experiment was mixing a teaspoon of Guayusa with a teaspoon-ish of Bamboozled!

You should try this immediately. So refreshing and jungle-y and delicious. I even accidentally let the second steep infuse for probably ten minutes, and it was still fantastic. Amazing!

Mmmmmm, Guayusa…

I mixed some this morning with a bit of Perfect Pear, since I have almost a half-tin of that left and I really didn’t care for it when I tried it. I thought it might work with the guayusa, though, since the grassy, earthy taste might cut out a bit of the artificial sweetness that I dislike about Perfect Pear.

I was quite right! It’s lovely.

Guayusa this morning! I mixed it with spearmint and peppermint because I was in the mood for something earthy yet refreshing. It was quite perfect, and I enjoyed two delicious steeps before I headed in to the office for a bit. No tea at work today, since I had no idea how long I would be there and I knew I’d have to get groceries on my way home. Ugh.

Anyway, this is a lovely combination, and guayusa is just always absolutely delicious.

This morning, I mixed some Guayusa with Cocomint Cream for a deliciously refreshing / soothing drink. It seems like Guayusa brings out the best in every other tea I mix it with. I just love this stuff.

GUAYUSA I LOVE YOU SO MUCH THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY DAYS SO MUCH BETTER.

Yum, yum!

I had a super busy day yesterday, so I took some of this mixed with Santa’s Secret in my travel mug to work. It’s so tasty, I ended up drinking another two infusions throughout the day. Guayusa is just always so delicious.

I am going through my Guayusa sample so much faster than I would like to! This morning, I mixed it with Santa’s Secret for the lovely minty-vanilla taste that Stacy does so well with The Killer’s Vanilla. It’s not nearly that fantastic, but it works. It’s certainly perking up my morning.

I sure do love guayusa.

Today, I mixed this with 52teas’ White Christmas for quite possibly the creamiest cup of guayusa ever. Lightly minty and mostly just delicious. I love how the guayusa makes everything I mix it with taste better, earthier and more natural.

I limit myself to one teaspoon per day, because if I didn’t, I think I’d put guayusa in everything.

Today, I mixed in a bit of Spearmint with my post-workout Guayusa. Ohhhhhh, it was brilliant. So refreshing and earthy and absolutely delightful. I will be drinking that again, for sure.

I was so excited to try this one. I brewed this tea right before my hockey game started because I figured that if my team started to lose this tea would help cheer me up. I am regretting buying only 50g of it instead of a 100g tin because I love it.

I think I was a bit in love with this tea from the moment I opened the bag. It smelled grassy yet a bit roasty. Like mate yet not. Brewed it was surprisingly flavorful. I was expecting grassy and vegetal but this was fruity and a bit nutty. It tasted like a slightly under-ripe banana with a bit of a roasty, almost caramel type background. It was an unexpected but yet completely welcome surprise. I may add a bit of nutmeg and cinnamon next time. Why not?

Guayusa may just kick mate’s butt. I think mate will still be my go-to when I am looking for a coffee-like drink but I love guayusa. I will probably keep a tin of it stocked in my cupboard.

I added a bit of nutmeg, cinnamon and caramel syrup this time. It tasted like a caramel banana pie. So much better than the last time. I think I prefer it without all the extras because they kind of covered up the vegetal taste from the guayusa.

Today i went to DT to pick up some essentials and I thought I would try something new to go. I got this with a bit of skim and agave. Living as close as I do I left the bag in until I got home.
I took a sip just as I walked in the door to discover the bag of floor my dog tore apart… which cutely left dough on his face. But it was a bad experience overall. It tasted like a cup of hot grass with sugar. This definitely wont find it’s way into my cupboard.

I got this as a sample from David’s Tea. This probably sounds bad, but this tastes like cooked cabbage to me. I really love this. I’m fond if vegetal like teas and this is no exception. I will certainly be ordering this!

personally when it comes between guayusa and mate i prefer guayusa so much more ! its less of a strong grassy taste which i dont mind at all but the difference is i find guayusa alot more smoother and sweet almost although I still do enjoy mate when roasted it gives off more of a nutty caramel flavor

I drank this in my DAVIDs guayusa bowl with my stainless steel bombilla with no milk or sugar added perfect energy boost without the jitters

This is not the tea for me. I’m sure if you like guayusa, you’ll enjoy this, but I really hate it. Yes, it does give you a great boost, but the flavour is terrible.

Very strong tea, kept me awake for hours! Nice replacement for red bull. Added it to all the raj tea and it made the tea really nice.

Tastes good, but I got bored of my cup quickly. Gives a huge boost!

I tried Guayusa on a trip in Ecuador back in 2008. I loved it. The DT one seems to be completely different. I do not find it especially energizing, and the taste is bitter (tastes like dirt to me). I did not enjoy it, and won’t be trying it again.

Great for mornings.

OKAY SO. At first I liked this, but then I tried it again a few times and it kind of made me sick. Didn’t taste that good… then an hour later my stomach was killing me… probably unrelated to the tea, I did have some greasy pizza that day. Sigh, I bought a tin of this, so it will be around, maybe I will come back to it and re-discover my appreciation.

mmm steeped hot right in my guayusa gourd and sipped through my new metal bombilla! great for energy and the taste is not to bad. I keep adding more hot water as I sip and it cools down.
