From DAVIDsTEA

Picture parfait

The ancient Chinese used it in medicine. The medieval Europeans traded for it along the Silk Road. And today we love it in pies, sauces, muffins or just plain, dipped in a little sugar. But the best way to eat rhubarb is with sweet, ripe strawberries. Like in this refreshingly fruity, deep red tisane. It tastes as bright and juicy as a fresh-picked berry, with a tart rhubarb punch and a subtle hint of yogurt creaminess. We love it hot or iced, or as the base for sweet, zippy sangria. Now that’s a beautiful thing. Caffeine-free.

Ingredients: Apple, hibiscus, raisins, carrot, yogurt bits, beetroot, strawberry, rhubarb, artificial flavouring*.

Allergens: dairy

Loved this one! It’s a favourite in my lab. I ordered a lot so I’m set for a while in case they discontinue it. It’s not just ‘tart’- it has a rhubarb flavour only rhubarb lovers would recognize.

I really hate this one. Tried it twice and something about it hit me as sickly sweet, even though I usually like sweet fruit teas teas iced. I think I’m just not a huge fan of yogurt flavoring in a beverage and I think I’m learning that strawberry isn’t my very favorite flavoring either.

I really, really like this as an iced tea option. Very refreshing, very clean taste. I always pick this as my free option, but don’t like it enough to purchase a whole bag.

Catching up on day 3 of DavidsTea’s 24 Days of Tea.

I’ve had this tea before so there’s no real surprise for me here. It’s got a nice, strong fruit flavour and some tartness from the rhubarb. Really more of a summer tea to me, though. I’m happy to keep this tea stocked in my cupboard.

Advent Calendar 2017, Day 3: Fruity, but the yogurt bits gave it a weird, off taste and strange mouth feel. So close to being good, but I kept making those mouth movements that dogs do when they have peanut butter in their mouths to get the texture out.

This tea is one that I like a lot, so was happy to get it as Day 3 of my Tea calendar. The tea brews up very pretty deep velvety ruby (hibiscus and beetroot) and also gives you a mini aromatherapy session. The tartness and slight sweetness balance well. I enjoy drinking this one hot or iced but sometimes it’s a bit acidic for me, so I have to limit this tea.

This is one of my favorite teas! I grew up loving rhubarb pie, my mom used to make it all the time and this is a guilt-free supplement for that. Also great caffeine free option, and the perfect ‘night cap’ when you want something reminiscent of dessert. The color was absolutely gorgeous red, and the tartness of the rhubarb combined with the sweetness of the strawberry was mouthwatering, I couldn’t help but brew a second cup, which I did leave to steep a little longer than the first time, more around the 5 min mark, and tasted a bit better.. I know some people have a strong disdain for hibiscus, but I found this tea to be very pleasant no real undertone of the hibiscus flavoring. Overall, really enjoyed this tea and drink it a few nights a week. No sweetener needed!

Day 3 DavidsTea 24 Days of Tea advent calendar – Strawberry Rhubarb Parfait. Aaaand, we have our first ‘nope’ of the advent calendar. Only 3 days in, that was kind of fast. I was apprehensive given the word parfait in the title. Then I opened the sampler tin and gave it a whiff. My suspicions deepened. I knew I might be in for a less than appealing mug of tea.

But, I’m dedicated. I’m in. I’m gonna try all 24 of these puppies, come hell, high water, overly aggressive stevia content, teas that smell like a child’s dream birthday cake, or whatever the heck else this calendar can throw at me. So, I steeped it up. The colour in the mug is quite lovely, a deep red-violet. As I was a little less than certain about this one, I went easy on the steep time and kept it to 4 minutes (on the low end of the recommended 4-7). Maybe other flavours would have unfolded with a longer steep that I liked better? I doubt it, but it’s not entirely out of the question. I won’t be giving it a 2nd chance to find out, though.

The flavour was not quite as much of a total sugar and yogurt bomb as I feared, but it wasn’t not that either. The strawberry is pretty front and centre, which was a little unexpected given how low both it and rhubarb are on the ingredients list. I like a good apple-hibiscus based herbal generally, but it’s overpowered by the yogurt pieces that add a really synthetic, candy-ish tone to the whole affair. For those who really dig that sort of thing, this might be a good tea for you. I, however, am not this tea’s target market.

I gave it a good 7 sips before giving up on it. But I had an idea: I had a very tart, undersweetened lemonade in my fridge, so I tried adding a bit of this tea to the lemonade. It worked out pretty well! The lemon beat back the yogurt candy vibe enough, the tea’s sweetness made the lemonade more pleasant, and the rest of the ingredients (berries, rhubarb and fruit mostly) worked nicely with the tart citrus. So, would I drink this as a tea? Not if it were up to me. But, it was fine as a lemonade addition. Might work okay as a cocktail with some soda water, fresh lime juice and vodka. Maybe. If anyone tries that, let me know if it worked out for you.

Def. not buying this one — or anything with the word parfait in the title. Or anything containing yogurt bits. Ever. Bleh.
