From Den's Tea

Amoda Tea Monthly Box – March 2015_

Loved by anyone who tries it, this tea is a must-try. There is a perfect balance between the fresh, grassy taste of a Sencha (a Japanese green tea) and the sweet tropical pineapple. Very natural & authentic fruit flavour and a buttery creaminess make this tea an example of how flavoured tea should taste! Great as a cold-steeped tea.

Ingredients: Sencha green tea, dried pineapple, natural oil

Steep It
1.5 tsp per 8 oz cup
freshly boiled
1-3 minutes

From Den’s Tea:

The dried pineapple is mingled with quality Sencha in this taste of Hawaii. If you make iced tea, it makes a great addition to your summer tea time. One sip will transport you on a Hawaiian holiday, without the airfare.

Origin: Shizuoka
Harvest: A Blend of 2009 First & Second
Species: Yabukita

Tasting Profile:
The flavor of tropical pineapple and a hint of coconut force you to feel like you’re on vacation. Very sweet and creamy.

Den’s Preferred Brewing:
Water: 4oz boiled
Leaves: 2 grams or 1 heaping teaspoon
Steep: 30 sec
2nd Cup: Water boiled; Steep 15 sec

For 1 Iced Tea: Put 50% more amount of tea leaves into a teapot. Steep as directed for 1 hot tea. Once you brew it, put ices into the cup to lock the aroma.

With all the positive comments I’ve read about pineapple sencha lately, I just knew it had to be good. However, I didn’t expect this tea to completely blow me away… and it did! Den’s Tea does a phenomenal job with its teas. The sencha is so very green and inviting and the little chunks of papaya scattered throughout contrast nicely. I loved looking at it and breathing in the fresh, pineapple scent. (At first it smells a bit too pineappley… similar to pineapple in syrup.)

I always worry about cooking my green teas and ending with veggies, so I took a lighter route again. 185/1 min. Now, the pineapple scent is subdued, but still very present. There is something else weighing in on the aroma, but I can’t quite place my finger on it. It’s a heavier scent, more vegetal and I’m a bit worried about the flavor this tea has. Until I take a sip…

The taste… amazing! First and foremost, I taste the pineapple. It’s still ever present, but is not too sweet. I can pick up papaya in the aftertaste, perhaps coconut, too. It’s a sweet/nutty combination of flavors. There’s a slight bitterness to the tea, not too much. Most surprising of all is the body of this tea. It has a thickness to it. I can’t believe it is just water here and not something heavier. There is most definitely a buttery creaminess to it. I think that’s what I was picking up in the aroma… butter. It’s a very interesting combination and an extremely pleasing experience. This tea is wonderful!

I made some of this iced today. Really a good iced tea, I think I like it better iced than hot. It tastes very tropical and summery. I think that I’ll try to have some of this on hand for the really hot part of summer.

This is AWESOME iced.
10g, 12oz water, brewed for 1.5 mins. Then I poured into a pot with probably 8 ice cubes (ended up being about 18-20oz water).
The second infusion (also iced, same parameters) I shorted the steeping time to maybe 20 seconds. It was even better than the first.

Smells and tastes great! Fresh, and sweet but not unnervingly so. I’d had negative experiences with green teas in the past but I must say so far everything I’ve tried from Den’s has been very enjoyable. It helps you can use boiling water according to their instructions (why, I don’t know, but hey).

Also, this seems like it’d be fantastic iced. Can’t wait!

ETA: So I had like 6 cups of this today (using 2 teaspoons for the entire day’s worth and my new mana-tea infuser, yay! Not-so-little guy served me well). So good! I love how after you drink it you still have this lovely mouthfeel and flavor just like you’ve eaten really juicy pineapple (it’s similar to how Joy’s Teaspoon Lemon Zest gives you an oily citrus zest mouthfeel that lingers long after finishing the tea). I get it most at the roof of my mouth.

This is wonderful; light and sweet, with a very natural pineapple flavor. I drank it hot this morning but cannot wait to have it iced this weekend.

Amazing tea, nothing better than coming back from an annoying class and being able to chill out with a warm cup of Pineapple Sencha.

I love everything about this tea, from the taste to the smell to even how it looks.

You can’t go wrong with this one.

Random self made theme: A tropical tea

So sometimes I just search keywords in steepster to find my next tea or tea company. Pineapple sencha was my latest craving and search term after having and running out of 52teas’s pineapple sencha from the spring/summer last year. Surprisingly the list of pineapple senchas in the database was pretty short. However, one from a company called Den’s Tea had a pretty high rating. After looking into it a bit, I happily saw they are still around in California! Woo! I definitely cruised through their selection on steepster and their website and found 4-5 teas to start with: Apple sencha, Grape Sencha, Yuzu kukicha, a Yame Fukamushi sencha and obviously the pineapple sencha. These came back in mid January and I had been holding off on them for a bit.

Today was the day though! (I may have naively opened all the flavored ones so I could smell them and decide which was right for the moment). And pineapple definitely won out. All of the teas smelled amazing and the sencha was a really rich dark green- I am very pleased with the quality.

Side note: I read the about me section and some of the articles from Den’s tea and they are also a business in japan. Den Shirakata is a third generation tea business owner and his japan company just turned 100 this year. They source their tea mainly from Shizuoka where he grew up. He went to school in the US and then in late 90s came back to start Den’s Tea in California. Pretty cool that his business is still going in the US 23 years later.

Preparation: Western- poured over ice
Tasting note: first steep 30 secs (after pouring) really sweet, with sugar cane and grass notes. Makes me think of fresh ripe pineapples. The first steep is darker and thicker and richer from the green tea and the pineapple is more syrupy. The green tea aspects remind me a lot of nozomi from the japanese green tea co.

The second steep (15 secs after pour and then iced) the green tea has more floral notes and there is a pineapple fruit after taste. Nice and lighter if you are looking for something more subtle. I think there is less syrupy sweetness in this steep and it is more a “natural” sweetness.

Overall, really great first impression iced. I will have to have it just warm next time to compare.

Good morning everyone!

I made a cup of this one yesterday but let it steep far too long so the resulting brew was intolerably bitter. I took two sips and poured the rest down the sink.

Today, I was a bit more careful and let the water cool down for a good 4 minutes and let the tea steep for only 3 minutes. The first thing I noticed was a buttery aroma rising from the cup. It wasn’t savory but more of a sweet cream butter flavor. The tea liquid tastes and smells of pineapple, but even with the shorter steep and cooler temp it still tastes a little bitter.

I was really excited about this one after reading such great reviews here, but I’m just not too impressed after having tried it. Maybe I’ll try steeping this a few different ways in the future to see if I can find a way to enjoy it.

Butter and pineapple sound good, but bitter, not so much. Maybe try steeping it differently, like you said.

This is an awesome pineapple flavor. Seriously, it’s spot on to a fresh, juicy slice of pineapple. Lots of sweet but also tang. The base adds a layer of vegetal flavor but really it’s the flavoring that shines.

I love this one too :)
