From Dessert by Deb

Yes, you read right: marmalade in a COOKIE! Because all amazing parties and celebrations have platters piled high with cookies and everyone knows thumbprint cookies are basically cookies with treasure in the middle. Seriously, who doesn’t love jellies and jam?! This juicy and sweet green tea blend is bursting with the citrus of orange and the sweetness of maple and brown sugar for one mouthwatering bite of dessert. You just might want a dozen to take home.

Certified organic ingredients: Green Tea, Orange Peel, Oranges, Canadian Maple, Brown Sugar

Handcrafted in Toronto, Canada.

Steeping instructions: 2 tea spoons at 200F for 4-5 mins

I thought I would really like this blend. The ingredients list seemed inviting, yet simple. It was just a combination of green tea, oranges, and some sugary notes. It sounded like something I would like.

First Impressions: To be honest, the dry leaf of this smelled a bit off-putting, which was unusual since Deb excels at making her teas smell so darn good! I have tried her other citrus teas, and they always smell like fresh oranges. I think I expected this one to smell like a sweet jam, but it smelled earthy, old, and bitter. However, after I finished steeping it, it ended up smelling like a bitter, tart orange. Not my favourite, but it was no longer off putting either.

Taste: Ignoring the smell, I think this tastes quite good! Although this does not remind me of a thumbprint cookie per se (because when I think of a cookie, I think about something having a creamy or cakey note) it does remind me of an orange jam.

Although this is a pleasant blend and I am glad I got to try it, I am not sure if I will repurchase it. I think Deb has some other excellent citrus tea blends I prefer over this one.

Sorry to hear that your batch didn’t have the best scent. I agree 100% that this blend is missing its ‘thumbprints’ element, but it does a decent job at portraying the marmalade portion.

Sadly, yes! I was expecting it to smell fresh and fruity, but it tasted a bit… old? I think that is the best way of describing it :( But I do love Deb’s other citrus blends a lot! :) And yes, agree with you completely. To me, it tasted more like a tart, sweet citrus jam than a cookie.

Sipdown (1178)!

I could have sworn I’d tried this tea before, but I must be confusing it with a different Dessert by Deb flavour – there are many orange ones, after all. Regardless, this is nice/enjoyable but it’s not doing anything special for me. I do appreciate how smooth and pleasant the green tea is – it’s definitely present/detectable, but as a non lover of green teas I actually think it’s incredibly smooth and complimentary to the orange notes and it’s not turning me off at all.

I do wish that the orange was either jammier and more sweet like an actual marmalade – it’s a touch weird, honestly, to be asking for more sweetness in a Dessery bt Deb blend since they do lean really sweet but I think it would benefit the illusion of the name here. Conversely, the orange level could stay the same but the tea could be more buttery or pastry leaning which would give me more of the “Thumbprint” part of the name. I don’t think the blend needs both – that would be too much, imo. It’s just a little too simple/straight forward for my own tastes at this moment.

I’m happy I tried it though – thank you VariaTEA for sharing!

Maybe this blend needs more maple? I am looking forward to trying this one soon. I will add it to my order next time. :)

Sipdown (241)

Honestly, I thought I finished this already but apparently not. So now this is the official sipdown.

I’ve enjoyed this tea much more than I thought I would. I normally don’t love green teas and orange teas aren’t the biggest appeal to me but this one was always good. Also, its steeped in surprisingly hot water but never seems to suffer for it.

The green tea base is coming out a bit more in this cup than it usually does. Ofc that is to be expected given its the final bits from the bag. So while I don’t love the hint of grassiness, overall its ok. It has a nice citrus/bright orange flavor that also has almost a honey-like sweetness to it.
