Drum Mountain White Cloud

White Tea by Golden Moon Tea

Grown at the Buddhist Drum Mountain Monastery on the mountaintops of Fujian, White Cloud has a light sugary sweetness with hints of gardenias and grilled leeks. A rare tea of the Da Bai varietal that is hard to oversteep.
Steep Time: 3 minutes
Water Temperature: 170 degrees

Another entry in the Golden Moon Single-Leaf Club. It is my first white tea so I would not even attempt to rate it. The leaves are quite large. I followed the recommended steeping time and temperature.

I normally drink breakfast teas, heavy on the single-estate top grade Assams so this is quite different than those. Very vegetal – can’t say if it is leeks or not, but vegetal. The flavor lingers long after drinking it. I know white teas are supposed to be sweet, but I am not really picking this up at all, perhaps because it doesn’t compare to the honey or molasses of the assams.

Interesting. I can see why some might like it. Not quite my cup of tea. Now I’m really looking forward to the Golden Bi Lo……

My first white tea so it’s hard to describe well as I don’t have the experience or tasting ability for it yet. So far, it has a light taste; green with the tiniest, hard-to-find sugary note feeling under the front of the tongue. I say good but not awesome, but then, as said, I don’t have any experience with whites, really.

Just had my last cup of this sample. I can rate it better now that I’ve more experience with whites.

My earlier description of the flavor is accurate, but it’s not anywhere near as good as pterosaur whites I’ve since tried. It’s reminiscent of wheat but a bit on the weak side of white flavors. I’m not unhappy to be out of it now.

Second try.

This time I can already smell much more, so I’m sure this tasting will be more accurate than last.

The smell is very vegetal with a hint of sweetness. Not bold like black teas, subtle and sniffy lol. Maybe a little honey-toned.

Since the leaves are so long in this, I use about 1/8-1/4 cup of them to 12oz of tea. Sounds like a lot, but it’s not… it turns out to be about the same as 2 tsps of more broken teas, judging by how much space in my infuser they take up before and after brewing.

The flavor is very vegetal, it’s true. I think leeks may be accurate; with it’s subtle honey taste it reminds me a bit more of fresh cut grass or possibly wheat. Yes, that’s it: wheat. That’s what the sweet + green equals out to, for me.

I’m definitely liking this better this time around. But still not an all-time favorite… just makes me want to explore more white teas.

Pterosaur = the other
