Coconut Pouchong

Green Oolong Blend by Golden Moon Tea

“There’s mystery to the art of finding and freeing the floral aroma and rich flavor of a pouchong tea. But the reasons Golden Moon’s Coconut Pouchong is noticeably better than others are pretty simple.

For one, we use the highest grade teas for the base for this flavored blend – large, deep green loose leaves – where normally leaves of such quality wouldn’t used. This makes a difference. And we derive our deep, natural coconut flavor from real coconut milk, instead of the artificial flavoring employed by most other blends.

The difference is real, present and unmistakable, and its why our Coconut Pouchong won “Best Tea” at the 2007 World Tea Expo."

My awesome HoppiTEA, Alana237, sent this in my package so I am enjoying a fragrant cuppa right now.

This is the first tea I’ve tried from Golden Moon. I really enjoy the deep coconut flavor (and fragrance!), but the pouchong tea is what I’d write home about.

It’s grassy and mellow, light but not so much that the coconut overpowers the tea flavor. It’s a comforting, fragrant cup. Delish!

frenchvanilla sent this one to me…thanks!!

I’ve not had many of Golden Moon’s teas (in fact, I think I’ve only had their Lapsang Souchong), so I’m really excited about this. I didn’t sniff it prior to brewing (too cold!! Must get tea into tea maker and retreat to nest on couch!), but I could smell it after it had brewed, and it’s got this wonderful oolong scent to it…sweet, golden grassy notes.

Coconut taste is very mild to me…in fact, I don’t know if I would have identified it had I just been handed the cup to drink. It is smooth, and creamier than most oolongs I’ve had (perhaps the coconut milk does this?). I’m definitely enjoying it, but if I’m going to drink a coconut flavored tea, I want it to be really coconut flavored. And probably in a black tea base.

This was a sample provided by Golden Moon. Beautiful long leaves and essence of coconut. While I like coconut, I was pretty sure it did not belong in tea. Approaching this tea with caution, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The liquor is very light, almost clear, in the cup and the aroma is wonderful. The coconut taste was very smooth and creamy with a natural sweetness. The leaves really expand when steeped. I got a total of 9 infusions out of the sample packet before a co-worker made me throw it away. Patting the leaves dry to use again the next day was too much for him. I just couldn’t bring myself to part with this tea as it is very addictive. Each cup tasted as good as the first. The closest I have to a negative comment is the flavors blend so perfectly it was a little difficult to separate out the taste of the tea.

This is a well blended tea. I can taste a slight smokiness (is this the tea? or the toastiness of the coconut) which perfectly tempers the sweetness of the coconut. The coconut does not taste artifical which is a plus. And the pouchong base, which seems milder compared to a black tea base does not overwhelm the coconut.

Thanks to SoccerMom for sending a sample of this to me and I will definitely be purchasing this and the Golden Moon sampler SOON.

This was a pleasant coconut tea experience and almost erased my first experience w/a coconut tea (Adagio’s Thai Chai) that did not go well. The spicinessof the chai called out for milk. Then, the milk, lemon grass, and coconut combo tasted like Thai Curry…

Backlogging from my trip. This one was another winner in the iced tea category for me. The coconut flavor is pronounced, sharp, and not artifical tasting at all; this tea’s flavor is reminiscent of those unsweetended coconut water drinks sold at Whole Foods. I would have to say this is my favorite Golden Moon tea by far.

This one has a natual coconut flavor that does not overwhelm the pouchong tea base. Not suprised that this is an award winner. This is one that I will definitely re-order!

I’m not a fan of coconut, but I got this as part of a Steepster package and tried it.

It has that toasty coconut flavor to it and it doesn’t overwhelm the tea, but no.

I am ready to admit that I love coconut. I never thought I did but after slowly coming around to it in small doses in other blends, I was ready to take a leap with this latest installment from Steepster Select. This is amazing! It has a toasted flavor to it. It has a great bouquet of florals, and I’m really enjoying it!

This isn’t something I would have picked out on my own, but I am so glad that SS has better taste than I do.

I really love coconut so I had to try the coconut pouchong by Golden Moon, having read so many good things about it. This is a lovely tea, there is no doubt about it. Nice coconut smell and flavor with a hint of buttery-ness. The flavor is more subtle than you would expect from something like a dessert tea, for instance. Light and delicious. I definitely would buy this again but it’s a toss up between this tea and Rishi’s coconut oolong. They are both so good.

This has been cold brewing in my fridge for 18 hours and I finally decided to try it. I might have made it a little strong but when I added soymilk to it, it’s really very tasty. Like a big glass of coconut milk but at a fraction of the calories.

I am having this with a seaweed salad for lunch and the two go pretty well together. I might be weird for eating seaweed but I kinda like it. :)

I forgot how much I like this until SimpyJenW steeped some up and started talking about it! Now I must have it. :)

The coconut here is sweet and delicious and the pouchong plays a light and elegant base. smells heavenly. see my previous tasting notes. :)

I seriously cannot help but make this every time someone mentions it – so I sent some to Tamm and she remarked on how good it smells and I had to have some too. It is one of the best coconut teas out there.

Happy New Year afternoon! This is a sipdown as I finally finished a tin of this. It’s vey good when it’s cold brewed with a dash of soymilk.

I’m really not Southern but I’m making a big old pot of black eyed peas and listening to the blues tonight. I just discovered this amazing woman Marcia Ball. Having my tasty creole peas, good tea and lots of good tunes!

Add me to the list of those who don’t like coconut-flavored things, but liked this tea anyway. It’s a buttery, sweet, fresh coconut that melds with the green/oolong flavor without overpowering. I am definitely tempted to buy some of this this, though $7.25/oz is more than I’d usually pay… we’ll see.

ETA: I’m having the 4th steep of this with a bowl of popcorn, with butter and coconut oil, and that’s bringing out the green/flowery bits in the tea. Don’t let the fact that it’s flavored make you think this is a cheap base – there’s a nice pouchong under there.

I used about half of my 2.7g sample, to make 4oz; I’ve steeped twice so far with good results. ETA: After six steeps, I think this is done. Still, a really good value; that was 21oz of tea from 1.4g of tea leaves!

So a few samples in my Golden Moon Tea sampler have now made me want more. I’m already in love with the Sugar Caramel Oolong and the White Persian Melon, so I had to see what was up with this Coconut Pouchong. Now keep in mind that I love coconut. I have a bag of shredded coconut in my fridge just to munch through from time to time. Almond Joy is my favorite candy bar. So a coconut flavored tea (a pouchong, no less!) sounded delicious.

And it delivered.

The pouchong flavor is light and doesn’t interfere with the coconut essence, which radiates from this cup in a beautiful toasty bouquet. Unsweetened, I couldn’t really taste the coconut, but sweetened, it flows delicately and doesn’t compete with the pouchong. It was just what I needed after a long day. Plus, now that this puts my order over $39.99, I can get a free teapot! SCORE!

Still one of my favorites from Golden Moon Tea, hands down. The mellow sweetness of the pouchong along with the depth from the coconut make this an enjoyable treat.

After skiing all morning, I need something with some caffeine. So, I pulled out this sample. I’ve been quite frankly a little scared of it. I wasn’t sure I’d like coconut in tea and I generally stay away from green tea as it gives me migraines (well, see if I’ll be punished for this tea later).

When I opened the package and smelled it, it smelled just like those square coconut cookies with ridges on the top. I can’t remember what they are called or whether they even make them anymore. I just remember them from when I was a kid.

Brewed, I get alternating tastes of a light green tea with floral notes (I think I smell some jasmine in there) and the coconut cookie taste. Yum!!

Update – Second steeping still tasting good. My husband took the second steeping of this sample and then told me to put it on the shopping list and he doesn’t normally like green tea (or much flavored tea for that matter).

I really really really love this tea.

This is like a fresh green coconut husk in tea form! The combination of the slightly bitter, astringent green tea leaves and sweet coconut milk flavoring is spectacular! I’m very much reminded of tropical islands. For me, tropical islands are all about the coconut trees, coconut milk, palm trees, banana leaves, bamboo and teakwood—and, somehow, I’m reminded of it all when I drink this tea. It’s very good.

So far, I’m loving my GM samples—thanks Golden Moon! I definitely need to order a full tin soon.

This smells and tastes delicious. The aroma is real coconut, no artificial tinge at all. I was able to get two nice mugs of tea from my sample pack. I ordered a tin of this untried, so next time I’ll be brewing it with more tea!

If you don’t like coconut, don’t try this. It is definitely COCONUT!

Opened up the tin of coconut pouchong for an afternoon treat! Delicious.

Backlogging—
This morning I brewed some of this to take to school in a travel mug. It was steeped for quite a bit longer than suggested, but did not get bitter. The coconut flavor really shown through! I was very pleased with the way the taste held up in the travel mug.

I really enjoy the nose on this tea. It smells of toasted coconut and has a very subtle and sweat taste. The flavor is not overpowering, but it’s just enough to make this tea one of my new favorites. Certainly not something I would drink every day, but a really good late night tea if I’m in the mood for something different.

Taken with no additives.
This is my favorite tea. It is rich, sweet and decadent all by itself. This is one of 2 teas ever that I have never gotten sick of and I really believe that is because the flavor is so subtle. The mouth on this is very rich feeling so you don’t just feel like you are drinking flavored water. There is a distinct texture to this tea that coats and feels almost hearty.
And in complete contrast the flavor lingers subtly almost like a breath of sweet air.
After taking the time to season a yixing with this particular treat tea the flavor is slightly bolder but remains subtle and non-offensive. I’ve been waiting to see if the coconut would take an artificial over tone after being enhanced by the pot but it continues to remain wonderful.

I was very very pleased when I found this tea in the 007 select, because well, …coconut, and also because I had been wanting to try a pouchong and just hadn’t been able to pick one out for purchase.
I am usually worried when loose tea leaves have such a strongly flavored smell, but Im pretty sure I sunk my nose into this bag for a good 20 seconds and then exclaimed to my boyfriend that he rush over immediately to check this out. It’s a wonderful coconut treat aroma like you would get from a proper full fat macaroon, as one would expect from a tea thats been given its flavor from hearty coconut milk.
I brewed this in a Gaiwan at 180 for 3 minutes, 3 times for 3 infusions. I found the tea to change slightly between infusions, as the coconut aroma and taste subsided, the tea gives up more complexity. First of all, it’s a very pretty colored brew, most likely the obvious sign it’s a pouchong, as its a medium golden tan color. The wet leaves smell, again, strong with coconut but it had a very decadent appeal, I almost want to equate reminiscently of slightly toasted mugginess from autumn leaves.. it’s great. Each infusion brought more of that aroma and less coconut.
The taste of this tea is a full bodied balance of the sweet buttery coconut and an earthy toasted pouchong. It leaves a lovely slightly nutty finish, perfect for sipping on while barely working on something.
I really enjoyed this tea, I desperately want to serve this with a mushroom Tom Kah Soup!

OMG!!! I can see why this tea won the award for best iced tea at the Tea Expo. Wow just amazing. The flavor balance was perfect. The coconut had a toasted feel the pouchong had just the right flavor for a match made in heaven. I will have this time and time again.

5-1-10. I just made this tea hot and it is still fantastic. I am in love with this tea.

I absolutely love this one. Slightly sweet, creamy coconut in flavor, a touch silky. Just divine. I am running low and drinking is sparingly but I will be keeping this one on my permanent list.

A delicious as usual. A yummy way to end the day. I just love the toasted coconut flavor of this gorgeous tea.

I have said it before and I will it again…Coconut Bread and Coconut Pouchong…AWESOME!!!

Upon additional sipping I just have to say this tea really makes me HAPPY! :-)

Amazing, light, creamy coconut! Check out my blog for a full review…

Rather than a fake coconut flavor, this is soaked in coconut milk. It creates a lovely smooth cup of tea! I feel like I’m in the tropics when I drink this tea! And it can be brewed several times!

So I’ve been drinking a fair amount of this over the past couple of weeks but haven’t got around to writing it up yet. But as it’s today’s Select, I suppose I should delay no longer.

The coconut (which, as others have said, is more like a toasted coconut) is definitely more noticeable than the tea when you open up the canister and smell it. This mellows somewhat as you steep the tea: no one would mistake this for tea-less coconut water, but no one would fail to notice the coconut either.

Anyhow, I like it and have been drinking it with some regularity.
