Sipdown no. 19 of the year 2014 (a tiny one as there’s almost nothing left in my sample)!

Steepster is angry with me this morning, I think. I can’t “like” anything, get my notices, etc. and when I tried posting this before it disappeared. I hope that’s not an omen for the rest of the day.

I put this one on my shopping list. My problem with Harney & Sons is I have a hard time disliking anything they make. I did honestly want to try to whittle things down, try to make some fine distinctions among their black blends, but I think I have to admit that I’m at the point where I just throw up my hands and say you can never have too many Earl Greys and you can never have too many delicious black blends.

And be grateful that tea takes up less space than shoes.

My tea of the late, late afternoon… I can’t decide if I like this one more than Earl Grey Supreme. Light bergamot, very smooth base. I think it will require more testing……..

No idea on my brewing parameters as I am out and about, but it is yummy!

I just received a pretty big order from Upton Tea, so maybe a small order in the Fall. I like that they nearly always stock Mangalam Assam, but I’ll probably order the Nahorhabi Assam, due to the fuller leaf. HaHaHaHa….I guess I could start ANOTHER shopping list! :))

I am drinking some more of the sample SimplyJenW sent to me. Tis is a very nice Earl Grey. I have had one or two that made me think I was drinking industrial cleaner or perfume, but I have not had that problem with any of Harney’s Earls. Imperial Earl Grey is one of their most strongly scented IMO, but it makes a very nice cup that doesn’t offend. This Viennese Earl Grey is a touch more refined than many, and it really running almost neck and neck with their Earl Grey Supreme.

I was so impressed with this Earl Grey, maybe because I wasn’t expecting much—it’s very nice indeed. The body’s a bit lighter than many, and the bergamot isn’t heavy but you still get that wonderful bright cleanness all of my favorite EGs have, no funky bottled orange blossom essence smell. I could definitely put this into rotation for when I want the comfort of an Earl but lightened up, a bit breezier than usual. Enjoyed this with post-work afternoon tea—sliced pear, prosciutto, and arugula on toasted mini ciabatta rolls buttered and coated with fruit preserves. Tasty.

A sipdown. I made a big cup (1 1/2 tsp/12 oz.) and the ratio ended up being just about perfect. This EG is amazingly smooth, with just the right amount of citrus zing and astringency toward the end of the sip. I really appreciate EGs that don’t have a strong, bitter base—I like my citrus fresh. This one is gone for now but maybe not forever; so far H&S has a high percentage of my favorite EGs and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this one.

1933 tasting notes

This was the very first tea I wrote a note for on Steepster, back when my tea obsession what first blooming (it’s been helped on significantly by Steepster!). I brewed this one with a little less tea than before, which seems to have taken care of the bitterness, as it did with Harney’s Earl Grey Supreme. And like the EGS, I enjoy this one much more this time! The bergamot is the primary note but it seems light, with a bit astringency. The Darjeeling base is prominent, and I detect some roastiness especially as it cools. This is a nice, well-rounded tea, but I think I prefer my EG to be a bit more floral.

Delicious Earl Grey!!

The dry blend smells very strongly Bergamot.

The brewed tea is a medium boldness black tea with a strong bergamot, citrous flavour. The darjeeling in the blend makes the base very smooth.

Quite enjoying this one.

This is the last of my Earl Grey samples. It’s been fun trying them all – I’ve learned that I prefer either a traditional Earl or a Lady Grey, but that I don’t want any green or white tea in the mix. I like the bergmot strong, and the black tea bracing!

This Earl Grey is made with darjeeling, which is not generally my tea of choice. I wasn’t expecting much, but I wanted to give it a shot, so I steeped it for 5 minutes, then added foamed milk to make an Earl Grey latte (my favorite way to drink this tea!) And you know what? This isn’t bad! It’s miles better than the Upton Sacher Blend, which I think is meant to be quite similar, being a Viennese earl. The bergmot is strong and cuts through the milk easily. There is a slight bitterness, but it’s possible I oversteeped slightly, so I’m not taking off points for that. I wouldn’t purchase this tea, and I actually prefer Mighty Leaf’s Earl Grey for afternoons, but I can certainly recommend it!

This is one of my favorite tea companies in the world! It is truly a family-run company, with John Harney Sr.’s sons traveling to India, China & Japan to find tea to bring back to their cafe, tasting room, and wholesale business.

I was at their tasting room in Millerton, NY, and had to get this tea (along with a few others).

Being from Darjeeling (most Earl Grey varieties are from Assam, Keemun, or Ceylon, depending on the brand), this Earl Grey is delicate yet crisp. It has no smokiness like some Earl Greys, and the bergamot is suitably balanced. Not too much on the citrus, but certainly detectable.

All around, this tea hit the mark. It’s a great tea to get the morning started, to continue the day, or to lounge around at night. It feels appropriate always. This tea is fantastic without any additions. Try it!
