From Harney & Sons

Deliciously silky and full of complex flavors, our Pomegranate Oolong tea blends large Ti Quan Yin leaves—also known as Iron Goddess of Mercy—with the tangy, sparkling flavor of pomegranate. The result is a luscious and fruit-forward brew with a toasty aroma and ample flavors of bright pomegranate. Brew hot to enjoy its smooth, silky texture and sweet aroma at its finest.

Ingredients: Oolong tea, pomegranate flavor. Contains natural flavors.

I’ve been on a bit of an Oolong kick recently so when I needed to take a tea sachet with me today instead of making loose leaf, I grabbed this sample. I got this as a sample in an order I placed a while ago, and just hadn’t thought about it.
It was a nice natural oolong, not very sweet or such a strong pomegranate taste, but I can tell there is something like a pomegranate taste in the background.
I ended up resteeping this tea bag several times and it held the strength of the flavor through all of them. I also loved seeing how large the full size oolong tea leaves got inside the sachet, made me happy knowing they are not all broken leaves, they are full and the same I imagine you get when you purchase loose leaf.

I would happily have another cup, and maybe I would pick up some next time I am in store, but nothing I need to have more of right now.

Eelong

Drinking this one right now, actually! It tastes different than a standard tie guan yin, but the pomegranate is effectively a ghost of citric acid.

The sample I have is pretty old; there’s really no pomegranate flavour left. The oolong wasn’t fantastic either, so I didn’t even resteep it. One cup of this left, which I will drink, and then can be happy it’s gone.

Not rating because I doubt this is how it tastes fresh.

This might have been the oldest tea left in my cupboard. I know I moved to my house with this tea (still sealed) more that 6 years ago. So I was concerned…since I knew the tea was probably flavored with oil.

I unsealed this and smelled it. And it tried to bludgeon my nose with pomegranate smell. The flavor was sharp and bright – which means an oil. It didn’t smell rancid so I decided to make a cup. I prepared to discard it if it tasted off. It tasted of pomegranate sharply. The underlying base tea was only just okay.
As I was drinking, I played with the bag a little and tea started coming out the bottom of the bag! So sealed at the top, but deteriorating at the bottom, not worth keeping. So sipdown by discard.

This was a sample from my Black Friday Harney & Sons order during their free shipping on all orders event.I still haven’t opened any of the sample pouches I bought from that order. Since I’m trying to sipdown other teas first. So this is really my second tea that I’ve ever tried from them so far. It was a free sample from the order. All of the 3 free samples from them came in sachets.

I brewed this hot with no additives.
Tasting Note: This is pleasant but not what I expected at all. I don’t taste the pomegranate at all so the name is definitely misleading. Its creamy and quite sweet with strong honeysuckle notes coming through. It’s slightly floral tasting. It’s definitely not a fruity oolong whatsoever which is what I would expect if I hadn’t read the tasting notes before brewing this up. There are also some lovely buttery & grassy notes similar to a sencha. This tea needs to be renamed in my opinion. It’s a lovely tea but the name doesn’t fit it whatsoever. This reminds me a lot of Steven Smith Teamaker’s Jasmine Silver Needle tea that I love so much but it’s less complex, less floral, and lighter tasting.

I bought a sample size bag of this and brewed it this chilly November evening. It was not to my taste at all, but perhaps I would appreciate it more during the interminable summer months.

“Cold” steeped 2 bags on the counter in a camelbak bottle with filtered water from the refrigerator while I ran errands in the morning.
.
Served with straw and a generous spoonful of simple syrup, after shaking it with ice in a cocktail shaker and pouring over more ice in a giant coffee mug*.
.
Refreshing and tasty; I am, however, blaming it for the bizarre dreams about British attack owls I had during my afternoon nap.
(Did I tell you my work schedule was bonkers? It is bonkers.)
.
.
Side note: Holy cats, now that I’ve discovered cold steeping, its all I want to do anymore! It helps that its already in the mid-high 80’s here and will only get worse.
But so much forethought – I’m generally not that organized with my food/beverages.
.
*Seriously, that thing is huge. It can hold an entire regular bottle of wine.
Or half a day’s worth of tea.

Sometimes I wonder whether or not the individual responsible for packing the free samples offered by Harney & Sons has an intuitive understanding of my tastes and selects samples that run counter to them. I recently posted a negative review of their Organic English Breakfast and then received nothing but sample sachets of Organic English Breakfast with my most recent order. Prior to pulling the sachet of this flavored oolong out of my sample pile last night, I had been wavering on trying this one for nearly a month. I decided on it mostly because I wanted a cup of tea and couldn’t think of anything else to try. I didn’t care for it, so here’s hoping that my next Harney & Sons order does not contain a pile of Pomegranate Oolong samples.

Brewing flavored oolongs always kind of perplexes me. I almost always reinfuse oolongs. As a matter of fact, I tend to favor brewing oolongs gongfu style. For some reason, that never really feels like the right thing to do with flavored oolongs. I prefer brewing them Western style. Harney & Sons recommended a single 4-5 minute infusion in 205 F water, so that is the method I used for this tea. I ended up steeping the sachet in 8 ounces of 205 F water for 5 minutes.

Prior to infusion, I noted that the dry tea leaves gave off a wonderfully pronounced pomegranate aroma underscored by a hint of grassy, vegetal character. After infusion, the pomegranate aroma was much more muted. As a matter of fact, I primarily noted mild aromas of butter, cream, custard, and sweetgrass emanating from the pale golden tea liquor. In the mouth, I noted a subtle pomegranate note that was quickly overwhelmed by flavors of cream, custard, vanilla, sweetgrass, butter, and plantain. I also noted a slight floral quality in the mouth, almost like a mixture of lilac, honeysuckle, and saffron. The floral and pomegranate notes were a little more pronounced on the finish, as were the notes of vanilla, custard, and sweetgrass.

It ended up being a good thing that I decided to go with a one step Western infusion for this tea, as I really was not impressed and had little desire to press on with additional infusions. I generally do not care for flavored oolongs, so I am not certain what I was expecting from this tea. To me, it seemed like Harney & Sons muddled a perfectly acceptable Tieguanyin with the addition of pomegranate essence which fought the base tea’s more savory and vegetal characteristics.

This is a classic, tightly rolled oolong (Ti Quan Yin) with a very nice pomegranate flavor! The scent is so sweet and fruity and it’s great when I’m craving a light flavored tea.

This tea has a fruity floral aroma. It tastes fruity and sweet like a piece of juicy fruit gum. It is not really my cup of tea.

I tried this one at a standard Barnes and Noble Starbucks, and I was pleasantly surprised with it. Other reviews of this one were not stellar, but I can say that compared to the Teavana and Tazo lines owned by Starbucks, this Oolong tea was way better than any of their other teas. This Oolong was definitely and An Xi variety. Green, nutty crispness dominated the cup over the pomegranate which for me, was a relief. The flavoring does add a slight sweet kick which is pretty nice, and the leaves aren’t too bad looking.

If I were limited to my choice of teas, this would be a descent go to for me since its a greener oolong. However, this one really loses out on oolong’s full complexity and I personally would save my money for something to savor. Considering that I was able to drink this at a Starbucks, I can say it was worth it for that slightly better drink. I would recommend this maybe to a friend, yet I wouldn’t try to sell them on it.
