Momoko

Fruit Green Blend by Lupicia

MOMOKO captures the enchanting nature of a graceful Japanese beauty. The inviting flavors of luscious peach and sweet vanilla are accented with lovely flowers in a fresh green tea base. This tea is exceptional without any added sweetener, as an amazing sweetness comes through in the tea leaves, enhanced by the peach and vanilla. Try hot or iced for a brew to be enjoyed throughout the year.

I just had a small sip of Husband’s mojito. Bleurgh! Not for me at all. I don’t actually like alcohol much and don’t find it refreshing no matter how many ice cubes are involved so, I suppose I could have told myself that it would be a bad idea.

I need something to wash that down with. Sil to the rescue! This one is a green tea with peaches and vanilla and Sil shared a few bags with me. I see that she didn’t much care for it herself, which makes it easier for me to say that I’m sceptical because I don’t actually much care for peach in tea. Peach everything else? Yes. Peach in tea? Not so much. And it appears that the deal-breaker for Sil was a strong floral note, something which I don’t really care for either.

Yeah, I’m beginning to expect something pretty dire here. But hey, at least I discovered that it’s a green base before I poured boiling water on it, so that’s a good sign right? Right!

Besides, it also has vanilla in it, and we all know what I’m like with vanilla, don’t we? Also, it’s been a long time since I actually had a peach flavoured tea, so my tastes might have changed in the meantime. These things do happen, you know. (For example, I used to really like Darjeeling. Now I just don’t care for it at all.)

There is definitely loads of peach in the aroma. It’s like when taking the very first bite of a peach or nectarine, and the fruit aroma comes up through the nose. There’s something green smelling in the aroma as well, sort of along the bottom and the edges and that note has a touch of something floral to it. I can’t immediately find any vanilla in the aroma, but there’s something sweet sort of hovering around the other notes which could be it, but might also simply be a peach fruity-sweet aspect.

Yeah, the flavour definitely has vanilla in it. It’s the first thing I find. A creamy thick sort of sweetness that reminds me a little of melted ice cream. A long with that, the green base comes out in force, and I can see what Sil means about something floral behind the vanilla. That’s exactly the way I’m experiencing it too. This is one of those teas that feel like they’re layered and the floral green tea is the bottom layer with vanilla right on top of that.

The floral aspect is quite obnoxious, but not completely undrinkable I don’t think. Sil shared two satchets with me, and I’m going to try and coldbrew the other one. It’s finally the weather for it too. This is just exactly the sort of tea that I’ve had good experiences with in coldbrew.

The peach flavour is mostly going on in the aftertaste for me here, with some modest overlap between it and the vanilla. This was the note that I was feeling the most sceptical about and it turns out to not actually be so bad. In fact I feel quite ready to dip my toes cautiously into the peach-flavoured tea pool again, so perhaps my tastes in that regard really have changed.

Not awesome, but it could have been much worse. I think it’s saved by there being two notes in here that I actually like. If either the peach or vanilla, and I don’t think it matters which one, had been missing, I wouldn’t have liked this at all, I don’t think. It’s drinkable as it is, and it’s infinitely better than Husband’s alcoholic concoction.

Edited: The cold brew is actually much nicer. The peach is very much at the forefront here, and although it’s still pretty floral, it’s not quite as obnoxious. Unfortunately the vanilla seems to have got slightly lost, though. I really very much prefer it brewed this way, but that doesn’t surprise me. It’s something I’ve noticed before with these sorts of blends.

Meh. I am just not impressed with Lupicia’s peach flavor. Even if it tasted like peach candy, I’d be happy, but I just don’t get peach at all. This one at least is the most tolerable out of all momo related teas, which is good because I got an entire tin in that happy bag.

The green tea itself is really good though, I wonder if it’s the vanilla that just throws everything off for me. I may have to try cold brewing it to see if I like it better cold and maybe prepared a different way.

I decided I’m not going to class tomorrow because I am afraid of going downtown until this Final Four stuff is done. Also pollen but that’s a terrible excuse as I’m going to be planting. My city started up a community garden and I may get a plot! I just have to keep living here then…I was considering going back into Atlanta proper when my lease was up but I am dying to be part of a community garden, especially if it’s just starting up.

Thank you for the great sample and the funny Christmas card, History Laced. It really brightened up my day! Lupicia is a place that would have otherwise been off my radar if not for you!

The dry leaves of Momoko smell near the same as fuzzy peaches: sour and peach-like with a dash of vanilla. Already we are off to a good start; I do not pass up fuzzy peaches. Steeped, the wet leaves gain a salty seaweed scent that is not unpleasant and not as overly present in the liquor. Isn’t that usually a characteristic of Sencha?

The green is more astringently vegetal than buttery mellow to start but it picks up more of those latter qualities near the finish and as it cools down. It starts strongly green that transitions down into sour, then sweet, vanilla peach.Ten minutes later and it’s almost all creamy soft peaches with a floral streak. There are some very subtle notes of sour and salt that creep in too.

Sipping this makes me think of sandy beaches, sun tan lotion, and tropical fruits. It’s amazing it can transport me somewhere like that when frosty patches of snow on the ground are visible from my window.

This is the first time I’ve had peach tea with a green base. Peaches are usually one of my least favourite fruits in yoghurt, juice drinks, etc. but I’ve loved almost all the peach infused teas that have stumbled my way!

sipdown! (fair warning, i’m aiming for at least 290 by the end of the weekend, and this puts me at 301)

this is NOT the tea for me. I don’t mind the peach taste so much but behind the vanilla taste there’s a floral taste that makes me want to cry. It smells delicious! and i really like how the vanilla is in with the peach, but that floral thing going on makes this a NO tea. this might be a really nice tea for someone who enjoys more floral green teas… rating reflects my dislike for floral things…ick.

This is a pretty little tea, with long, flat green tea leaves and large, sparkly sugar crystals. There are little blue petals and pink rose petals. The dry leaves smell lightly of juicy peach, and the aroma of the tea itself is very floral, with a note of sweet peach. The flavor is lightly grassy with a sweet finish. There is a fresh peach aftertaste that reminds me of eating peach icecream. In the little town that my mom lives in there is a small country icecream parlor that has the best peach icecream, with big chunks of peaches in the icecream, and this tea reminds me of that. It’s actually a pretty sweet cup on it’s own, but I added a little sugar to bring out more of the peachy flavor. I’m not really getting any vanilla from this, just a light grassy taste with a hint of fresh peaches. Very calming for an afternoon cup. Thank you, Mercuryhime, for this sample!!

-Dry blend has long flat green tea leaves with large sugar crystals, small blue petals and small pink rose petals.
-Dry leaves smell lightly of fresh peaches. Tea liquor aroma is floral with a note of sweet peaches.
-Tea liquor is a clear bright medium yellow color.
-Light grassy flavor with a sweet finish. Lingering fresh peach aftertaste.
-Best with sweetener.
-Good tea. A lightly flavored cup of fresh peaches.

Yummy! This tea is fabulous! It’s a lovely green base that adds to the freshness of the peach flavor. The peach reminds me of japanese peach gummies. What are they called? The ones that are individually wrapped in it’s own plastic packet?
Anyway, that’s how this tea tastes. I love when the flavors work with the tea instead of trying to overwhelm it. Now that I have an idea how good Lupicia is, I’ll have to order from them next time I’m low on tea. (aka never :().

Thank you CHAroma for another great sample!

Odd! I know this is supposed to be peach but it tastes kinda almondy to me. Like in an almond flavor kind of way. I get the texture and mouthfeel of matcha here from the added matcha powder. I can taste the flowers and the smoothness of the vanilla. Yes, there is peach here, but an odd almond like peach. Of course, peaches and almonds are in the same family so I can see why they might taste similar. Actually, the peach maybe tastes more like apricot? Hmmm… I need another cup to make sure. Yeah, the peach is not as strong as I would have liked. Still pretty tasty though. I think the Super Grade Momo Oolong is infinitely better, but this is a nice affordable green tea version. :) I also like that this green tea doesn’t taste like the typical Chinese sencha so many green blends are made of.

Also, I stayed later at the office than was wise today and left in a rush. As a result, I left behind one critical piece of equipment that would allow me to work at home should that be necessary tomorrow. I suck. Hopefully I’ll be able to get back to work. And hopefully the heat and electricity will still be on.

I can’t find my chocolate strawberry puer. Cry. Where is it? :(

Im drinking this instead. I was really struck by just how pretty this tea is. Cute mini flowers and pink sugar crystals. It’s like made for little princesses. :)

I’m still in anguish over my missing tea though! Where is iiiit?

I received this in my New Year Happy Bag. This is a tea I would probably never order on my own, as I am not super usually taken with peach tea. Not that I dislike it, but I don’t crave it or anything. I was surprised to see little crystals—sugar?—in the tea, but they are pretty subtle so I suppose I’ll give it a pass. The dry leaf was very pretty and it smelled very peachy and floral.

Brewed, the aroma reminds me of some of the other flavored green teas I’ve had, in a favorable way. I think it’s that fruity and floral combination. The flavor is definitely predominantly peach, with some rosy floral notes and a vanilla that smooths everything over. I can see how people get candy from this, but to me it’s not really quite candy-ish (possibly because I haven’t had a lot of peach candy). The vanilla does prevent much of a sweet fresh peach flavor, but it works well. The green tea kind of innocuously sits in the background, providing some green freshness to cut through the candy.

I am realizing that my taste in flavored greens seems to be narrowing. It’s not that I dislike fruity greens, but they don’t really speak to me right now. I think I would really love this one if it was on an oolong base.

I got my newsletter and sample the other day.

The aroma of this – especially while brewing – is amazing. The peach scent is so intense. Beautifully, marvelously peachy!

A nice peach flavor. The sweet, buttery taste of the tea comes through nicely and presents itself strongly throughout the sip. A pleasant vegetative taste to it.

This tea came as a free sample with my Lupicia newsletter so why not try it? :)

I have no idea why I’ve been drinking so much green tea today and I only hope I can sleep later on tonight!

This is a teabag and it was steeped at around 170 F for 3 minutes. The peach is very much like a gummy flavor in my opinion. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing though. I’m really not sure about the vanilla in this blend, why does it need to be here, etc. It’s confusing me a bit and vanilla is always a troubling ingredient for me in tea, it tends to taste “fakey”. Overall it’s a nice flavor and pretty refreshing for a flavored green but I’m not sure if I would buy this in the store. It might be really nice as an iced tea.

This was a free sample included in the Lupicia Monthly Magazine. Upon tearing open the tea sachet foil package, my nose was hit with a scent of ripe peaches and peach blossom. The floral notes were quite strong, but the fresh, ripe peach was still there. I wasn’t exactly sure how to steep this, but learned after looking at their website that it was a green based tea, so I decided to heat my water to 175F and steep for 1:30min.

The liquor is a light olive green, almost a matcha esque color, but more transparent than matcha. The aroma steeped is still peachy floral. The taste is similar to peach candy, almost reminds me of a peach bellini or Wallaby darned at Outback steakhouse. Sweet peach liquor with a touch of floral. The green tea base is buttery and a great pair with the peach flavors in this. I really enjoy this new tea!

This tea came in my happy bag – this bag is full of happy!

FYI, this is the bagged version.

DRY: DROOOOL! Creamy sweet peachyness! Like smelling those japanese peach gummies, yum yum! I spent awhile smelling this tea. The packaging is very pretty – I felt kinda bad opening the box.

STEEPED: Creamy and butter green tea scent, pale yellow green.

TASTE: Very creamy, wow! Actually kinda tastes like good fresh matcha, like my Kaimatcha, but on the creamy end. Upfront, creamyness that coats the lips and tongue, with crisp, buttery, sweet green. I don’t notice the peach flavor right away – however there is a light juicy peach aftertaste. No bitterness. As the tea cools, more peachy, but still kinda light on peach, heavy on creamy. The tea reminds me of those Campino yogurt creamy hard candies, but not as sweet and fruity.

COMMENTS: ooh this is tasty! I wish I had this loose leaf! 10 tea bags won’t last me long anyways! This would be perfect if there was more peach taste, but I love the flavor of the creamy green.
I’d recommend giving this tea a shot if you like creamy teas or matcha lattes.

Having a cup of Momoko to get pumped up for 2.5 hours of brazilian jiu jitsu practice! Yeah! Pump myself up with positive thoughts that I won’t get injured this week!

Good tea – super creamy with a hint of peach. Hmm, maybe I shoulda chose something more energizing like a citrus, ginger or tart tea? Ehhh, this is still good!

I don’t know how I’m drinking more tea – I had dim sum with my family in memory of my grandmother in law. She loved eating this dim sum’s place chicken feet. Gawd, I wish chicken feet were boneless, I hate the work involved with eating them! With dim sum, I drank probably an entire pot and a 1/4 of tea. I think I went to the bathroom 4 times after that.

After the last bathroom trip I’m ready for more tea! Mmm, this tea is so creamy! I still wish I got more peach flavor! I’m halfway through my box of momoko!

I decided to steep this at 175F due to the kettle being done faster, lol! It also bothered me how the steeping instructions are with boiling water with Momoko being a green. I left the bag in while I ate a pancake, so I’m not sure how long of a steeping I did. Overall, not that great. No peachy, just a touch of creamy and loads of grassy green with a little dryness.

Well, back to steeping this with boiling water.

This was the free sample that came with the Lupicia magazine this month.

The dry leaf smells super peachy with a touch of vanilla. I didn’t smell much of the green tea when it was dry, but it still was amazing. Almost to the point of overwhelming – but from experience with Lupicia’s tea, the strong scent of dry leaf turns into the perfect amount of flavoring when it is steeped.

And this was no exception – once steeped the buttery green tea came out more in the scent. The taste was perfectly balanced – green tea then a candy-like peach, with hints of vanilla in the background. The vanilla adds that extra complexity that really takes it over the top. It doesn’t need anything added to it – the sweetness of the peach and vanilla are perfect.

As good as this is hot, I think it really would have been amazing iced – I will likely have to get some for that purpose. Peach candy green tea will be a wonderful complement to this coming summer, I expect.

Tea tasting of the morning… Sample courtesy of CHAroma. Thank you! Lupicia and learning to like green tea are definitely on my list, and this sample is helping very much!

Let me prefece with the fact that I am relatively new to green tea. Also, let me say that this is a great one to start with. I do get the hints of peach and vanilla on the lightly grassy tea base. No additions. I am sure the flavors would come out with a little sweetener, but it really doesn’t need it.

6 oz cup, 1 tsp tea, freshly heated water to about 180, 3 minutes. No additions.

It turns out that my bamboo strainer from the first Steepster tea box fits my Fiestaware teacups perfectly. With a breadplate on top for steeping, it nearly makes a gaiwan, except that I just drink out of it….

Thanks Alphakitty! The aroma of this is so sweet! There is a nice peach flavor with a few floral notes. I’m always happy when I can taste the tea base under the flavors. The green tea has a bit of a buttery-slash-vegetal flavors going on. This was perfect to start my morning with! Thank you again!

So in order to get through the TTB quickly, I’m using my 4 oz gaiwans to brew half cups, that way I can sample a bunch of tea in small amounts. I’m still going with western parameters though.

This tea initially seemed like it might be kind of nice, but after a few sips my mouth began to feel strange, & my sinuses feel the way I feel when someone wearing perfume enters the room, so I’m guessing there are artificial flavors in this.
NEXT!

First sips: Lightly peach. Refreshing. Slightly sweet—in a “clear” crystalline way. Like a peach sorbet.

I’ve kept this steeped forever and used boiling water but it hasn’t gotten bitter or astringent at all. So upon cooldown, the flavor just seems to get more syrupy and more candied—like Peach Jolly Ranchers.

I like it! :)

I received a sample of this in a swap from Lady 0f Spaydes. THANK YOU! This is one of my favorite teas from Lupicia. I had purchased this sometime last year and drank it up fairly quickly. The difference is this one is loose leaf. The ones I bought from Mitsuwa were bagged. I love looking at the leaves swirling in the water. The green tea were a little flat and cut up a bit. There were some stems, pink and red rose petals, and some sugar crystals. It was beautiful to look at. The scent is amazing and peachy. I love peaches! It is also light and sweet. The brew was a very light yellow. The taste is sweeter than a peach, but not artificial. Delicious! There is mild astringency, but it felt smooth going down my throat. The peachy, fruity taste lingers in my mouth.

I even went back to Mitsuwa today and purchased another 10 tea bag bundle of this. I love the color coordinated packaging too. This one is in an aluminum colored sealed plastic bag inside a paper container! On the outside, it has a geisha on a pink sleeve. I even bought a few others such as Cookie and Strawberry & Vanilla. I am super excited to try these teas. It is so hard for me to go on a no-buy. Ah! I need to stop buying tea. I’m also waiting on my Kusmi Teas order…

I love this tea! I was happy to find this at the Mitsuwa near me! The packaging is super cute too.

I love the thin green leaves and the small pink flowers in this pyramidal tea bag. The smell is great! I love peach teas, and this one is a very good blend. I could taste the warmth and creaminess that the vanilla flavors give. The fruity and slightly floral notes play their tune as well. Delicious and refreshing!

This is one of my top three teas. This tea has a soft peach aroma, sweetened by vanilla. The intensity of the flavors is just about perfect with the green tea – not too subtle or overwhelming. The peach smells and tastes like natural peach. The tea itself is beautiful with tiny squares of lavender-colored sugar, red and blue flower petals, and tiny flower buds that looked like heather against the shiny, dark green leaves of the tea. Perfect for cool spring days.

I am backlogging my technical log from january and then I will post my revisited review.

Observation 1: The dry leaves remind me of peaches and apricots. There are small peices of leaves, bits of sugar and various unidentifiable bits in the blend.
Observation 2: Naked, the tea is a bright yellow greeen. The taste of peaches is very prominent. There is an apricot aftertaste.
Observation 3: With sugar, there is a nice nuttiness to the tea. I am quite fond of this tea with sugar.
Observation 4: (note: I didn’t know milk + green = blech yet) With milk the flavors are drastically detracted.

This is my review of this tea 2 months after (2/24) my initial log:

I am sitting on the floor taking a homework break after I gleefully found my lost (and my only) tea ball. Yay! I chose this tea because I realised that the majority of my collection is Earl Grey and rooibos. What a testament to my preferences, eh?

The scent of this tea makes me think of peaches and almonds and I can feel my muscles relaxing. I didn’t even know that I was stressed. I taste yummy sweet peaches and a vegetal note from the green tea base. I am so please that I chose to drink this tea! I don’t want to store the leaves in the fridge, so I may steep a second pot and bottle it up and try it iced.

Oh tea ball, how I missed you. Don’t ever run away from me again!

Where to begin! The dry leaves smell like heaven. Very peachy. Very fragrant.

There’s an abundance of pink rose petals, tiny blue cornflowers, and little hard translucent crystal-like rocks (sugar perhaps?). That might explain why this tea is so sweet! I’m impressed with how much is in here besides green tea leaves. Lupicia never skimps on ingredients.

In Japanese, Momoko means ‘peach child.’ It’s an interesting name because this tea reminds me of cotton candy and bubblegum, which I associate with childhood. The peach is very present, but there are also some lovely rose notes.

I can taste the vanilla, and it’s blended so well with the peach flavor. My only negative comment is that this tea is somewhat heavy because of all the rich floral notes. And something sour is pinching the back right side of my mouth. I have no idea what that could be!

This is a very flavorful green tea! It’s very sweet and only a little bit astringent, though not bitter at all. At the end of the sip, I’m getting classic sencha grassiness.

Overall, this is a good flavored tea. Not my favorite of Lupicia’s flavored greens, but still a contender. The second steep was almost identical to the first.

Today was a long annoying day. I really needed a tea break. This tea came to my rescue! I made sure to be more careful with the water to leaf ratio than I had been a couple days ago with the Happiness tea.

Oh, yum yum yummy yum! This tea is floral, fruity, and oh so sugary sweet. Delicious! Delish-ioso! So so good! Plus, it re-steeps exceedingly well. It really helped me through the day. I’m upping the rating again, this time from 77 to 81.

If you haven’t tried this yet and enjoy sweet, flavored green teas, add this to your shopping list while it’s still in season! It comes around in the springtime, and I highly recommend it. It keeps well over long periods of time in your cupboard too, which is a definite plus.

See my other notes for a more descriptive play-by-play…

After a not so great Formosa Oolong experience, this tea really hit the spot. I’m enjoying its sweetness and floral notes a lot more now than the first time I tried it. I think I might have judged it too harshly. This tea is winning me over. I made three infusions and every cup was as good as the last. What a lovely green tea! Raising the rating from 67 to 77.
