From Mark T. Wendell

Comprised of the first tender shoots of the newly grown tea plant, First Flush Darjeeling tea is a unique find and is rarely available in this country. We sampled a few of Darjeeling’s first pickings of 2010 and once again found a remarkable offering from the storied Puttabong Estate. Planted in 1852, Puttabong was the very first tea estate in the Darjeeling district and has an established reputation for producing the highest quality teas.

This season’s Puttabong Estate, Clonal Queen is an attractive mix of green and black leaves with many silver buds; yielding a full gold infusion. It has a lovely muscatel perfume and produces a lingering sweetness on the palate when sipped. It finishes with a floral and herbaceous nuance that is characteristic of a stand out First Flush Darjeeling.

Slowly, very slowly, working my way through my TeaEqualsBliss tea gift bag.

I >love< Puttabong. That classic muscatel flavour that is everything wonderful about First Flush Darjeelings is abundant in Puttabong. Always a good choice. This leaf is no exception to my expectations, so I’m rather satisfied. Malty and fruity and divine.

It’s taken me a while to post this because I needed to live with this tea to really get to know it. For the most part I really like full bodied Darjeelings, so first flushes are not what I would drink on a regular basis. I usually drink green tea in the afternoon and instead I have been giving this first flush a try. It is very light compared to most black teas, but when compared to my usual green teas it compares very well. Over time I have come to really love it’s beautiful floral notes, almost as if it were perfumed but with a exquisite subtlety that has you reaching for more. In short (it’s too late for that) I am enjoying this tea immeasurably and if you like teas which are a delight to your nose as well as you taste buds, try this one.
