From New Mexico Tea Company

A stylishly made tea with a beautiful bloom and an abundance of silver tips. Made from only the finest tender shoots plucked from our clonal sections during the onset of spring at Glenburn. The liquor is light and bright, smooth on the palate with undertones of citrus flowers and peach. Full of aroma, it personifies all the attributes of a fine Darjeeling First Flush tea.

Extra Info:
Tea in North India is produced for about nine months of the year, from March to November. The same tea plant may be plucked (harvested) thirty times during this period. Teas produced from the same plant, but during a different time of the year can produce a very different tasting tea because of a change in the environmental conditions, mainly the weather and season, which will affect the growing conditions. A good tea maker has to be very sensitive to these changes, and may have to fine tune his processes on a daily basis to get the best results. There is no machine that can help him, and he must rely on his finely tuned “nose”. The tea that you will receive will be from a single “batch” of tea produced on a particular day of a particular season.

I’m fairly new to Darjeeling blacks. I’ve only tried one 2nd flush so far and this is my first time with 1st flush. From some reading I’ve heard 1st flushes described as almost like green teas and this certainly matches that description.

The wet leaves mostly have a grassy green color, with some more golden brown leaves scattered throughout. The liquor also looks more like the yellowish hue of a green than a black.

The taste is lighter than 1st flush. It still has similar spicy and malty characteristics, but those are more muted and there is some sweetness as well. Overall less flavorful than 2nd flush, and I can see why it isn’t valued as highly, but still an enjoyable tea.
