From Peet's Coffee & Tea

This signature blend isn’t actually of Russian origin, but honors the tradition of the 19th century tea trade. Well-rounded with a full, smooth, ever-so-slightly smoky flavor.

Horse and camel caravans would spend sixteen months making the roundtrip journey to Eastern China, arriving in the Russian capital laden with chests of tea. The leaves aged a bit along the way; Russian Caravan’s quality probably improved significantly with the opening of the Trans-Siberian railroad. Peet’s take on this historic favorite is a Signature blend of China black teas for a smooth and smoky cup.

(Gifted to me by my friend Jen D AKA “J-Law”) I’m a coffee drinker. I have generally found tea to be boring, and often the tannins in black tea and the ‘green-ness’ of green tea are unpleasant to my palate. Herbal teas have been a thing I use when I’m sick, liberally dosed with honey, lemon and whiskey— consumed for medicinal value of the herbs rather than for the flavor. This is the first tea I’d ever had that I actually enjoyed on its own merits. This is a really good blend, with a full, smooth & smokey flavor. Yep, this tea is a smoke-bomb! It is very strong, gives a boost as good as coffee, but does need cream and sugar to balance the smoke, just like they drink it in the Motherland. This stuff will wake you up with visions of being bundled up in a horse-drawn sled, being carried across the steppes, with a warming cup of this tea in your mittened hands, breathing the fireplace odor of Baba Yaga’s hut as it looms on the horizon. This is a tea for Adventures!

Whoa, I was not expecting such an overwhelming scent. It smelled like smoked paprika or even a cured meat. Maybe it would have been better if it was lighter. The barista put way too much tea in the tea bag. It looked like more than 1/3 cup.

This is a great strong tea that will wake you up in the morning. It smells very smoky, but is very balanced when brewed. Great for people who are looking to replace their morning cup of coffee.

At first I expected this tea to be very bitter, but in fact the taste is more smoky and acidic. I do enjoy the smoky taste to it. It really adds to the nice blend of black teas. Make sure you drink it straight, anything else would ruin the smoky flavor.

Wonderfully interesting flavor.. The smoked taste really comes on strong while sipping, but I more enjoy the aftertaste, which to me is quite a smooth hint of flavor; good blend
