I’ve been away from Steepster for so long! My laptop died a few weeks ago, and then my desktop at the beginning of this week which means that I was left with no computer. Which, for me, is really hard! By the time I managed to fix it (okay, so I didn’t do anything but stand around anxiously, it was all my bf) NYCC had rolled around and I didn’t have time to catch up with tealogs. Now I’m sick (consars!) but my Red Leaf order is FINALLY in, just in time to get the last deadline! Though not enough time to review them all, since my post office hates me. This is just not my week! But I decided to dive right into the matcha, even though I have a looot of catching up to do. I ordered:

Size : Small (30 grams)
Flavor: Distinctive
Base: Classic Matcha

I love Chai, so I was thrilled to see it added as an option. But as my package moved across the country, I wondered how well something as strong as a chai spice base and a mellow matcha would really go together. Well, it’s gotten good reviews so far, but I was a bit anxious! And in the bag this smells all chai all the way. I was actually wondering if I went TOO strong on the flavoring and should have gone with delicate.

Well, the flavor level is spot-on for me once mixed into an icy cold latte! It’s a really interesting combination of flavors: the cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom taste is strong but fades quickly into grassy matcha heaven. Neither side is overpowering, which is exactly what I wanted! You can taste the chai and the matcha, but they balance so no sip is too chai-y or overwhelmed by matcha flavor. I got this mainly for mixing, and I think I’m going to try it out with Hazelnut or Pumpkin Pie first—too many options! You can get some here:

NaNoWriMo has made me kind of forget to do things like… eat, or sleep. I get so caught up in writing that I look up and it’s 8:30 and all I’ve had so far is a small bowl of cereal. Considering that I have low blood sugar and not eating in regular intervals makes me very ill, that is not a good combo! So I wander into the kitchen and think man, I want some hot chocolate. Okay it’s not dinner, but I need some sugar!

In college one of the dorm standbys was 1 cup milk + 1 spoonful nutella = the best hot chocolate ever. So I stood there whisking my concoction thinking that it would probably be good with some cinnamon, maybe a little nutmeg. Chai spices, yeah! And then it dawned on me: chai matcha. So yes, I am drinking Chai Matcha Nutella Hot Chocolate right now and it is the greatest thing ever. I think this would probably work with tons of flavors (berry nutella, caramel nutella, cheesecake nutella…) so if you have milk, matcha and nutella you should go do this RIGHT NOW. Well maybe not right now but try it, it’s fantastic.

Second Last Matcha review for today!
My matcha order was the following:
Size : Small
Matcha Quality: Starter (Basic Grade)
Flavor: Distinctive

I really wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. I am a big fan of Chai’s but i’m also very particular about the chai’s that I drink. Opening up this package was a weird experience. It first smelled strongly of cinnamon, then the hazelnut took over and then, vick’s vapo rub?!?! Yeah…don’t know what’s up with my nose but that’s what i’m smelling.
As always, I ignored what my nose was telling me and brewed this into a hot latte. I have to say, i don’t think i’d ever get this in a robust flavouring! This balance of spices when blended with the milk are as much as i’d need. I really like this blend of cinnamon and spice. It’s not quite what i expected but it’s still a wonderful warm treat that I will LOVE when winter finally gets here. I can imagine sipping this after cold evening walks in the snow with my other half. I really think he’d enjoy this one as well as it’s not too strange a chai blend and could replace the hot chocolate he usually wants. Another nice matcha from Red Leaf :)

Morning matcha smoothie…and i do not like….much. I think that i prefer the pumpkin pie matcha to this one. I tried to cut this one with vanilla matcha, as i have done in the past with the pumpkin pie and it doesn’t seem to have helped. It’s still pretty strong for me and there’s one particular spice that is cutting through the rest instead of blending well. It’s not so much that it makes for a gross, terrible bad, icky smoothie but it’s not going to be a reorder for me. I also hate to think of how strong this would have been if i’d gone with my usual robust! Maybe i’ll try and use the rest in baking or something. that would be nice.

Whee! Thursday morning working from home! here’s hoping i get time to make lots of tea given that tomorrow I’ll be without. Thought I’d start out with a latte instead of my smoothie to kick off things with a warm drink. This is an interesting matcha. I think i need to play with it a bit more since there’s an underlying taste there. Maybe I didn’t whisk it enough.

The smell from the envelope is intoxicating Cinnamon, ginger, cloves and other chai spices are perfectly blended in the most amazing ratio. I can’t get enough of this matcha. I just got my order and already I am planning what my next BIG order will be and for sure a BIG pouch of Chai Matcha will be in my shopping cart! But, don’t just take my word for how delicious this one is, head on over to Red Leaf Tea and pick up your own pouch. One piece of advice, the delicate flavoring is perfection and just go ahead and buy the large pouch…30g will not be enough: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/chai-matcha.html
As I sat at a high school football game last night, all I could think about was how delicious this matcha was…you see I had a quick cup before going to the game. And the minute I got home, I was preparing yet another cup. And then again this morning, I just had to have that Chai Matcha. It is the spices that have me on a binge. The ratio is spot on and I just ordered the delicate flavor level. Plenty of spice for me and did I mention the cinnamon, yes it has the most amazing cinnamon flavoring I have ever tasted in a tea. This one earns a permanent place in my tea cupboard that is quickly being taken over by some pretty decadent matchas from the Red Leaf Tea company.
