Pu-erh Blood Orange

Pu-erh Tea by Rishi Tea

Pu-erh Blood Orange- Based on an ancient and popular digestive tonic of Pu-erh aged with citrus and Asian grapefruit, we put together this succulent and soothing blend of blood orange and organic roots, fruits and spices. This has a heavy body, sweet and tart flavor with a crisp and refreshing citrus bite. The aroma and flavor of blood orange and grapefruit are in perfect balance with the rich-bodied Pu-erh.

I ordered a nice little package of this in my most recent shipment from Rishi. Although I like pu-erh a lot, I also like it mixed with other things sometimes.

I was a little worried about this because there is hibiscus in it. It seems Rishi is mad for hibiscus since it finds its way into so many of their blends.

This is VERY citrusy. When you open the bag it practically knocks you down with an intense fruit smell. I liked this, a lot. Mostly the flavor is of orange and grapefruit so it’s kinda hard to taste the pu-erh in here. I believe the pu-erh is grounding the tartness of the citrus with some earthy dark flavors, kind of like orange chocolate. I am finding it refreshing and delicious.

This is an organic and fair trade tea which is also a plus as far as I am concerned. I only wish I had purchased a bigger bag!

this would be better without the hibiscus…

I need to try Samovar’s version one of these days. :)

It was a beautiful day in San Francisco this afternoon and after a very long walk I took a nice nap and am having a bit of this to revive me. I really like the blood orange and grapefruit blend mixed with the pu-erh here. It’s still good even with the hibiscus, which I normally loathe (see my previous tasting notes). Steeped for 4 minutes with boiling water.

My first pu-erh experience, and I’m kind of underwhelmed. This is really good – the blood orange taste is definitely prominent, and I love blood orange – but I can’t really taste pu-erh. I’m not sure exactly what it should taste like, but I was expecting a very heavy, earthy taste. Right now I taste a bit of that at the very end of my sip, but mostly just blood orange and citrus.

It does taste pretty darn good, though. Just tastes more like a flavored black tea than anything else.

Not sure why, but I can taste more pu-erh in this today than I could before. The scent of the dry leaves it still to die for; I had planned to drink another black tea once I got to work, but I opened my bag and the smell of this screamed “drink me!” I like that the citrus is a bit more muted this time.

Interesting. I want more orange flavor out of this. It’s a very nice pu-erh, and it’s got some nice background fruit flavors, but nothing currently that is a strong orange blood flavor. Which I was really hoping for, as I love blood oranges.

It’s a good tea. I was just hoping for more orange.

Wow. I didn’t think I’d drink up this sample so fast. Apparently I liked it more than I thought. I still want more orange from the tea, but it’s a nice blend with the pu-erh. :)
