From Rwanda Mountain Tea

Rwanda’s teas are noted for the bright color of the brewed tea and smooth taste. These qualities are the result of growing at high elevations, in rich volcanic soil, and careful methods of production. The misty climes of the Rwandan mountains protect young tea plants from the sun during the brightest sunlight of the morning hours. This causes the plants to grow slowly and helps to create a pleasant, smooth flavor. Rwanda’s climate is temperate year round, and the particular growing conditions make for an ideal environment for growing tea. The tea plantations of Rubaya and Nyabihu produce loose teas of ideal flavor. Try this tea and compare to other green teas. You will be surprised at the flavor and the lack of bitter aftertaste.

A coworker returned from a trip to Rwanda with a box of this to share. It’s very different from Chinese green tea, which I was not expecting at all. First, this tea LOOKS different. The color is muted, and it looks like tiny pellets. Only unlike other pellet teas (gunpowder), the leaves don’t unfurl. And once steeped, the tea leaves turned a muted brown color

Taste-wise, the tea is actually pretty bitter, and slightly unpleasant, actually. (And I like a bit of bitterness in my tea!)
