From Silk Road Teas

“Iron Goddess” is our traditional-style Chinese oolong. It is light-to-medium oxidized showing some brown coloration on the leaves. This medium-oxidized oolong was the preferred style in China’s domestic tea market before the advent of low-oxidized, greener side oolong. This higher oxidized leaf process yields a full-bodied, sweet oolong with some nuttiness. The leaf is uniformly large, then rolled with stems intact. As the leaves unfurl slowly, the first steep is known for its aroma; subsequent steeps will provide increased taste.

Oh, num. It’s interesting how my tea phases go. A few months ago I couldn’t get enough of green Oolongs. Then I didn’t want anything to do with them. Now, I’m back to craving them. This hits the spot today. Floral and creamy and sweet. Siiiiiiigh of happiness.

The strong fragrance of the tea is immediately noticeable upon taking the first sip. The tea as an initial bitterness, however this quickly gives way to a lingering, bittersweet flavor when swallowed.

I wanted this one to be a good standby cost effective oolong. I was rather disappointed. The earthy flavor was over powering and hid any typical oolong notes.

Very light in color, earthy, and no astringency. I got this as part of the oolong sampler to give the oolongs a try— all part of my tea education. I’m not sure I’ll ever want an oolong tea for my “breakfast tea”, but it would be lovely later in the day.

Light in color, with a pretty strong earthy taste and aroma. The second steep is much sweeter, and very good. Also pretty forgiving if you steep the tea a bit too long.

Silk Road Teas doesn’t seem to sell this Oolong on its own, but has it as a part of their Oolong sampler, which I would strongly suggest to anyone who wants to get more into oolong teas.
