Even our vaunted Assam Mokalbari is undone by this newcomer, a sophisticated selection serving notice that perfection is always a possibility. Generous malted notes of barley and an ale-like fruity depth lead the way, reinforced by a cast of notes ranging from caramel to Brazil nuts. TeaGschwender makes great claims for this tea, which I am still trying to validate. It is light, and the lack of bitterness allows the fruity/nutty flavors to come through, but I’m still partial to the Mangalam Estate teas, maybe because I feel they have a greater foundation. I’m not sure Iike the direction toward which many Assams and Darjeelings are moving—striving for delicacy on the top notes, while sacrificing body in the process. Still, in the scheme of things, this is a satisfying Assam.

It has a nice nutty bright tea flavor and might be a good option for those that don’t like the bigger assams.

I always try and get the most out of my leaves, so I steeped the same leaves for a second time. Not bad, really, just not as good as the first steeping.

This Assam is lighter than other notable teas from the region such as the Hattialli (broken) and the Mokalbari (SFTGFOP1). A lighter color than the aforementioned Assams, the beauty is in its lush reddish hues, similar to hibiscus that seem to penetrate the lovely transparent light caramel color which to me was like peering through stained glass at the slight sediment at the bottom of the cup. While the flavors are not as direct as other black teas of note, the clear fruity, nutty, caramel notes are highlighted with a heavy malt and roasted barley flavor reminiscent of a Belgian abbey dubbel beer yet holds a very mild astringency making for a perfectly balanced cup. This balance makes it a wonderful every day, or “sessionable” Assam which would also be at home at a gathering of tea enthusiasts.
I really liked this tea. I can’t describe whether it has carmel or malty flavors, but I really enjoyed it. The dryness (astringency) is noticable but not pronounced. I steeped it for three minutes – I don’t think I’d want to go longer and am confident I’ll be able to go with a shorter time, too.
I have heard good things about this Assam Marangi tea, and also enjoy Mangalam Estate teas. I think I will have to try this one myself! :)
I’ve been away from Steepster for a while – just saw your review here. I actually wondered on my TeaGschwender Marangi if it was just stale. It was nothing like the Upton tea I had earlier this week. I would say the Upton one was more “refined” if that can have a taste, but very pleasant.
Just read through my earlier tasting notes. Interesting as Upton suggests brewing for 5 minutes instead of 4. It was quite good at 5 minutes. Although, I would think the TeaGswhwender selection I tried was from the previous year so that may make a difference too.
