I drank this while moving to a new townhouse, so I didn’t have a chance to take notes as I drank it. I had intended to add milk, but really, it didn’t need it! The chocolate was light and pleasant. Definitely not the highest of quality deep chocolate flavor, but it was a nice hint. The black tea was tasty with the chocolate. Not nice enough to buy again, but good.
Wow, the reviews are all over the place for this one. Though it seems most of you didn’t like it. Also, I should note that some of this is 70% off at Teapigs because the batch expires this month. Just a heads up!
When I first smelled the sachets during preparation, I was underwhelmed. They didn’t smell like chocolate to me at all. More like raisins, I suppose. But when the water hit them, I could. It smelled like chocolate and… yogurt? But this blend is supposedly dairy free. Hmm.
The flavor is… odd. Not what I was expecting at all. There is some weird fruitiness that reminds me of a Tootsie Pop sort of. Maybe I’m spoiled from tasting cacao teas lately, but this just doesn’t taste like real chocolate to me. It vaguely tastes like candy. Like super cheap “chocolate” candy. The black tea base they used kind of comes through, but not really. There’s just this yogurty tang to this…

My awesome husband gave me my birthday present today, and it was…drumroll, please…a Wagenfeld teapot! So exciting! It’s gorgeous! Nice, heavy glass, Bauhaus design, perfection! Cannot wait to try it! But…not with this tea, which is in it’s own bag, or tea temple, as the people at Teapigs like to call these things. I picked up a small sample at the NYC Coffee and Tea Festival last month, and thought today would be a good day to give it a shot, as I am a confirmed chocoholic. Not much in the way of scent, dry or brewed. It’s a nice, pleasant black with a subtle earthy chocolate flavor. This will absolutely NOT bowl you over with chocolatey goodness; it’s a lightly scented black, but the chocolate is there, albeit faintly there. Very nice with my breakfast. No sugar, a bit of milk, as always. I like it, but most likely won’t be getting more.
In an effort to use up some of these teabags, and also because I wanted a chocolatey iced tea, I cold-brewed 3 bags of this in my usual 20 oz water bottle overnight. I think I actually ended up leaving it two days by mistake, but it tastes fine. No astringency. I’m actually going to change my rating from 44 because for once I can taste the chocolate in this!! I wish I’d discovered this sooner because it’s much nicer this way. It’s still not the most natural chocolate flavour out there, but it’s not bad at all. The tea is a soft background and the chocolate dominates, which is what I expected from a cold brew. I drank this plain after my lunch to satisfy my chocolate cravings because I’m back on the diet, and it did help. I think it would have been a perfect chocolatey treat with some honey or maple syrup added, but I didn’t want to use the points and it was fine as it was. I’m actually fairly impressed!
A friend gave me this tea and I’ve been working my way through it. It’s not as subtle as I normally like my tea – it really only has one level of flavor, which is strong and dark. The chocolate is there but it mixes with the black tea. It’s an okay tea but not one I will be in a hurry to buy after I finish my supply. It is caffeinated though, which is all I really need in the mornings some days.
This may be better as a latte with milk and whipped cream on top.
I was disappointed by this tea. After reading some of the other comments about it, maybe I didn’t steep it for long enough. For me, and I do have an extreme sweet tooth, the taste really wasn’t that chocolatey. I will try it again and steep it for longer, but my first impression wasn’t brilliant. The taste of the tea itself was delicious and I did add milk, which improved it slightly. I was tempted to add a sweetener in it to see if it made a difference and maybe in my next cup I will try that. It’s definitely worth a try, it just didn’t taste how I expected it to.
