Maharaja Chai Oolong

Chai Oolong Blend by Teavana

Rich spices intertwine with a delicious Oolong for a tea that the Maharaja himself would love. This is the famed ‘Spice Route’ in your cup: cinnamon, ginger, pepper, cloves, cardamom and nutmeg fuse together to create a robust and celebrated chai tea.

Absolutely delicious, and the perfect holiday tea. It’s dark and the spice notes are amazing.

I’m all out! It was a good run Maharaja, but I’m off to try other teas for now.

I’ve now gone so far as to double steep this back to back. Clearly I am addicted, but also it’s just that good.

I’ll try not to write TOO much about this tea, but seriously this is going to be the tea I drink all through the holidays and could likely last into January. I lightened up the amount of tea this time and let it steep a little longer and it’s just perfect.

My addiction to loose tea began a few months ago at a mall when I was speeding past a Teavana and an associate got my attention with a sample of Maharaja Chai Oolong/Samurai Chai Mate blend. I was honestly blown away. I described the difference in bagged tea to loose tea to my mom as “like black & white tv to HD”. My heart fell when I read the horrible reviews about Teavana of course-how a company treats their staff matters. I did get a salesy feel, but having been in many brutal sales jobs it doesn’t bother me unless they are relentless, then I just say “I know this is your job, but I don’t respond well to sales pressure, so let me have a look around-thanks!” And don’t have problems. Here’s hoping the Starbucks purchase helps them with all that. So I am a lover of all things chai, and I adore this one. The dry leaf smell is cinnamony/cardamomy and even after sampling all the chais at David’s Tea, (I was dying to try the famed pumpkin chai which is out of season, so I bought an entire chair sampler just to get it!) I keep going back to this one. A few other people mentioned that there aren’t many Oolong leaves in there to unfurl in my strainer, I did notice that, but otherwise, this one is spicy perfection for me in a latte..

This tea is simply delicious. Right now I’m drinking it iced.

When I prepare it for iced tea, I put 8 teaspoons into my tea maker with 32 oz of water at 200℉. I fill a 64oz pitcher with ice and some sugar (I wanted something really sweet, so there’s 8 table spoons…). I steep the tea for about 3 minutes.

After all of the ice melts, I pour myself a glass, and add around 2 table spoons of milk.

This time, it was delicious and awesome.

I know that some people have said there’s almost no oolong in it. I’ve noticed that the oolong and spices tend to separate in the container. When buying, sometimes you can ask them to stir it prior to filling your container, and also be sure to stir it from time to time to keep it mixed.

I don’t think the cinnamon flavor is too strong. It might be the lack of diversity of spices. If you compare it to other chai blends, it is lacking in the multiple blends of spice area.
I do know that one of my friends doesn’t like it when I prepare this tea alone for that reason. They like it with some Cha Yen Thai mixed in with it.

I love Oolong. I love Chai. That said, there is nothing Oolong about this. All Chai here. It could have been blended with any run of the mill black tea and have the same taste. Very dominate spicing here. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, cardamom. If you are a lover of very spicy chai this ones for you.

The spices in this tea are STRONG! But it makes the best chai latte I have ever had!

I mixed Samurai Chai Mate (Teavana) with this.
It’s soooo good! It’s one of my favorite teas!
I always have it in the morning before work and it keeps me hyped and ready for the day. It really does wake you up. And it smells so good~
Taste like cinnamon and delicious goodness!

This in my opinion, should be tried at least ONCE. Favorite tea from Teavana thus far!

While much like other Teavana teas I’ve tried, you can’t get the best flavor out of this by following the instructions. However I am delighted by how spicy this is, accompanied by a mild sweetness. No additional sweetener required! I wish Teavana would tell you how to get the same flavor out of their tea that they do, but if you can figure it out its quite rewarding. Instructions say steep for three minutes with 2 tsp (If I remember correctly.) Best flavor I got was a heaped tablespoon boiled for 3 minutes.

Now that is a beautiful cup of tea. I am pretty sure that every cup of tea I have from here on out will only serve me to wish that it were a cup of Maharaja, with all of its spicy goodness. Guess I’ll have to stock up! 24 oz water, 3 scoops of tea, and 2 smaller scoops of rock sugar while steeping made it something more special than perfect.

This is a pretty kick-ass chai. I’m betting it would fare even better with the balance of some milk, but I enjoyed it on its own. I would dial down the cinnamon a bit, but over all this is a very nice and spicy cup of tea.

Somebody mentioned this chai as being HARDCORE and I totally agree! It is super spiced, almost too much for my tongue to handle by itself. However, coupled with some honeybush vanilla and honey the tea becomes a bit more sweet; I need to try this with some milk at some point. It’s a good tea, just very strong!

A really flavorful chai but not overwhelmingly spicy. I think I like this more than the average chai.

My second favorite chai tea, the spices are what really make me enjoy a brew of this.

It is very rich and spicy, just the right amount of kick that accents well with the woody oolong flavor.

Sweetened with just about a teaspoon of rock sugar.

A warm comforting cup of spicy Maharaja Chai Oolong tea to start the day.

Less tea leaves give me a lighter kick late in the morning.

Not a particularly busy Monday, so enjoying this becomes a fuller experience at work.

This tea is amazing at any time of day and night.

It is a special chai kick with a satisfying oolong flavor that gets me every time.

Doubling the tea leaves from 1 teaspoon to 2 allows for a thicker brew, which in turn allows the rock sugar to stay throughout the body and not fall to the bottom of the cup.

It also gives it a much fuller flavor, not so much spicier as it is a richer woody oolong taste entwined with the spices.

More tea = better experience

Satisfyingly spicy afternoon tea.

Second steep from last night’s leaves.

There is still that kick, although not as much, it is still a great way to wake up to a holiday morning.

Today, the brew is satisfyingly spicy, with a still strong aroma of pepper and cardamon.

I love when this tea has a bit of a bite to it, it gives me that extra kick either in the mornings or afternoons.

Very spicy tea with a good after taste. Hints of cinnamon are pretty abundant from beginning to end. Like most chai teas, the aroma before and after steeping is very pleasant.

Very tasty. Has a very nice spiced chai taste. Not overly powering.
