Silver Needle

White Tea by Teavana

Also known as Yin Zhen, this well guarded secret of Chinese emperors is a rare delicacy for a Western table. The most tender white downy tea buds are harvested only two days out of each year using the centuries old techniques of Imperial Gathering. This exceptional tea was reserved for the Chinese imperial family until just a few decades ago when it became available to the general public. Famous for its subtle taste, pale infusion, and extraordinary purity.

This is an extremely mild and very subtle tasting tea! You really have to sit there and close your eyes to concentrate on the slight grassy notes that it has to offer. I prefer more taste and flavor to my teas, but the health benefits are supposed to be great when drinking a Silver Needle tea. This would probably be great blended with another tea that has flavor, just to get in your daily dose of health benefits.

I don’t ever drink this tea alone. I tend to add it to more potent teas to cut the flavor a little when I want a milder peppermint for example. I might have to try it on it’s own and see how that is.

This is Teavana’s crème de la crème of white tea. This is my bread and butter tea. While I’m on the topic of bread, I’ll also point out about the flavor that if tea and butter had a child, this is probably what it would taste like. The texture of the tea liquor has almost a viscosity to it.

After a day with challenges, this is my tea. After a day with something to celebrate, this is my tea. Fortunately, today I am celebrating a good day with this tea and the Avett Brother’s Pretty Girl from Cedar Lane.

As I was drinking from my favorite tea bowl, I became concerned about being someone who has a favorite bowl.

I was inspired to put in a bunch of work in my mouth by Owl City’s Dental Care. Not sure if I have weak gums, but the floss caused most of the spots between my teeth to bleed. Then I decided to eat pizza from breakfast (because I’m an adult and adults can make these type of decisions) which I added a thick layer of crushed red pepper (because I’m an idiot, and that’s the kind of choices we make).

Busted gums + crushed red pepper = ow ow ow

White needle tea actually does seem to help. Unlike regular water, which makes things worse.

If anybody by now has not tried silver needles from a teavana I suggest do so! Its a great intro to White Tea 101 for anyone who willing to buy quality leaves at fair prices, and love purity in taste. Not a whole lot of frills, complex flavors, or the kitchen sink, its simply a grassy/ slightly hay-ish taste much like green tea. A nuttiness can also be found based from its primary flavor which are quite related to one another adding a tad bit of starchiness. There is quite a chocolaty aftertaste at the end of the tongue, a bittersweet sensation that beckons a dear drinker for more tea. Just my kind of tea!

Very very delicious, but very expensive. It carries a predominant vegital taste with a slight chocolaty (cacao) undertone. I love this tea more than most Greens, but I’m afraid its the only white tea I’ve owned/tasted.

If there is anyone out there, if anyone can hear me. I need recommendations on teas similar (or completely different), that are hopefully cheaper. I will repay you with my tea-llegiance, and a forever lasting Tea-lliance.

This is my favorite white tea by far. It’s simply delicious. I love having it after dinner. The steeped aroma reminds me of raw honey and the taste is smooth with a bit of sweetness. I once forgot about this tea brewing and seriously over-steeped it but to my astonishment it never went bitter, it was still delicious. If you’re used to strong teas then this one will seem a bit light at first but once you get used to it you will discover its amazing taste.

Ahhh… this tea sings to my palate every time I have some. The aroma and the delicate taste gets me every time. I just love this tea. Tonight I made a nice pot after dinner and enjoyed it together with home baked cornbread cakes. Mmmm… so good! :)

I rarely steep this tea without adding the leaves to something else (which also means that I steep it for a shorter amount of time than if I was making it alone.).

Alone, the tea is so light, and I normally like something with a little more of a lift.

But I do add the leaves to nearly any other tea in order to get the health benefits. And of I’ve been known to add the leaves to my bath as well…

Gooooood Morninggggg Silver Needle. With a love like you in my life, I could not take another (which is how i rationalize my lacking a boyfriend).

Some people complain about silver needle’s plain taste. If you dont have any other teas to mix it with, I suggest simply adding some fresh mint, lemon and raw sugar. It makes for a still neutral, yet refreshing taste.

mmmmmm

Subtle and delicate, a tea to be examined thoughtfully. Lots of little things going on: a hay-like, dry grass note, even a mild cedar tone. Think mild summer nights and clean, open air in a cup.

The type of tea that you drink in silence or with a good book.

This tea is great when you’re feeling under the weather. I added it to all my tea when I was fighting off a head cold, and definitely felt a lot better for it. On its own, it has an extremely soft, slightly grassy flavour. This is a subtle tea that I mainly use for blending.

I enjoyed this subtle tea. Even with over-brewing it was delicious! The leaves smell great and I like how soft and downy they look.

One of the best Whites ever. I enjoy it hot with rock sugar, or with a nice strawberry lemonade iced down mix on a hot day

So refreshing! My favourite is drinking this cold when I need something to quench my thirst. Very mild taste however.

This is true tea “soup.” The pale infusion possesses a very milky mouthfeel with a similarly lactic tang in the form of refreshing acidity. The taste is crisp and complementary to fermented foods; its unctuousness and bright savoriness capture distant echoes of soy. The aroma, though floral, can be damp and almost slightly gamy. Because of this, I prefer to brew this at room temperature for an hour or so.

This is a tea I drink after a day of working, a time to wind down and relax. The antioxidants within the tea are refreshing and help calm my nerves. Good blended with a flavoured tea or not, both ways are I find relaxing and calming, something to fill the senses and to settle down after a long day.
