Slimful Chocolate Decadence

I only got this because I was IN a Teavana (which is rare for me as it’s not easily accessible) and I found out it was a chocolate Oolong and I haven’t seen many of them.

I can smell chocolate, coconut, and a slight coffee aroma. I can’t really smell the rose which is ok.

It has a creamy taste which is nice. I can taste the cacao, chocolate-E notes, and coconut. I was hoping for more chocolate but the coconut is perfectly done. I cannot taste the rose but I am ok with that. I don’t think it’s needed.

This doesn’t brew to a very dark color and it’s not over-the-top flavor as I assumed it would be. At first I was thinking about tinkering with it to get more flavor but after sipping a bit more I think it’s ok the way it is! But I tend to double the amount of loose leaf as I do like it stronger.

I like this OK, but I wish I had read the description and ingredient list before I brewed it, as it does contain yerba mate in it and as it is now 9:50 pm I am hoping it doesn’t keep me awake all night… however, I did just yawn as I typed that, so perhaps it won’t.

The chocolate is deliciously rich, but, I wish this didn’t have carob in it. Normally, I don’t mind carob in a tea, but, here, it seems to impart a cheap chocolate flavor … like “diet” chocolate, if you know what I mean. You know how you can just taste when something is low fat that should be fattening, like low fat milk? I happen to prefer low fat milk, but, you can definitely TASTE the difference between low fat milk and whole milk. And that’s what I’m tasting here, a “diet” tasting chocolate, only this isn’t the preferred chocolate taste (that is, I prefer low fat milk to whole milk, but, I prefer whole-fat chocolate to diet chocolate).

I do like the flavor of the coconut here, it isn’t a strong flavor, but it adds a nice creamy dimension to the profile of the cup. Overall, a very pleasant cup of tea, just not my favorite chocolate tea.

Hey, it’s my first Teavana tea! This one comes to me thanks to The DJBooth. Teavana has a number of blends and such that I think sound tasty, but I’ve also read so many negative things about the shopping experience in store that I’ve never gone to the Teavana that’s 30 minutes away from me. I mean, I’ve thought about it, but it isn’t really in an area I frequent so it would kind of have to be a special trip. And you can’t buy samples. You get the picture. Anyway, I get to try this one now!

The dry leaf smells pretty chocolatey, but the steeped tea smells much more roasted nutty/coconutty. There’s a toasted-grain aroma in there that I recognize from some of the dark Wuyi Mountain oolongs I’ve tried. The chocolate definitely comes back to the front in the flavor, and the tea is intriguingly sweet. It reminds me a bit of the chocolate/coconut black tea I had from Praise Tea, though obviously with a lighter base. I find that a medium-bodied formosa oolong base like this has can often add an almost appley note to a tea, and I’m actually getting it from this tea as well. As others have mentioned, I don’t taste any distinct ginger or rose notes in this cup. Overall I’m really enjoying this, and while I may not run out to buy more when I’m done, Teavana has definitely made a good first impression.

The dry smell is deliciously chocolate. I usually am not a huge fan of chocolate tea’s, but his one was pretty good.

For me the significant note of the brewed was nutty, with a lingering cocoa after-taste. I drank it black, but next brew I may bump it with cream and sweetener and see if that pulls out the chocolate more.

A tasty tea that I am grateful to have sampled.

I’ve been back at brazilian jiu-jitsu (after being out with a broken finger) and this morning I feel like I was tossed around all last night – despite I was the one who was doing the tossing! Hoping some chocolately tea will do the trick.

DRY: very chunky looking with lumps of oolong, big wide coconut flakes. Again the mystery nutty shells are in this tea like My Morning Mate. Carob maybe? I’ve only seen it in a powder (back in my vegan days). Smells light, chocolatey. No rose petals in my tea as is pictured in the Teavana picture, could be a miss as that kinda thing likes to float to the top.

STEEPED: Bit more chocolately and oolong smell. Steeps up a gold colour.

TASTE: Light tasting – nutty, chocolately with oolong in the background. After taste of creamyness and coconut. No taste of licorice that I can tell.

WHO’D LIKE THIS TEA: Light tea drinkers – maybe a white tea person wanting to try oolongs? Also someone who likes coconut and chocolate.

COMMENTS: This tea did perk me up this morning – there is mate in this supposedly, but I didn’t taste it. I love chocolate teas as well as coconut. Slimful Chocolate is very much a light yummy tea if that is what you are craving for.

However, I think I am spoiled by “The Persimmon Tree” who does coconut flavoring better. I kept thinking the coconut could be done better to be more creamy. More depth would be an added bonus too. Overall, not bad, maybe I’ll try more dry leaf to see how that goes.

Another one that I grabbed on my recent venture. I agree with Teaequalsbliss that there is a slight coffee aroma with this one. Coconut is very apparent when you smell the dry leaf. Not so much the ginger, and I have not noticed rose in here. When it all comes together in the cup…it does taste a bit like chocolate cake…Hawaiian? I don’t know. I’ve never had Hawaiian chocolate cake. I like the cocoa flavor that comes through. Looking at the wet leaves in my strainer it looks like a combo of green and more oxidized oolong tea leaves. The tea base came through on this one and reminded me of the Shui-Hsien that I have tried overall a decent cup.

I’ve had this a while and put off testing it .. not sure why. In the mood for chocolate tonight (and have none in the house, which usually isn’t a problem…candy isn’t one of my many sins, lol).

Ingredients: Oolong tea, coconut chips, roasted mate, carob pieces, flavoring (chocolate, coconut, roasted chestnut, cream), licorice root, rose petals

The scent of the dry blend is of chocolate, but more of a dark cocoa kind of way. The brewed aroma is very similar, picking up on the hazelnut (which worries me… not a fan). First sip, I am tasting this hazelnut quite prominently (uh oh). It is being tempered by the other flavors, noticably the coconut which is adding sweetness I think. Aftertaste is where I’m picking up on a slight coffee hint that others have mentioned, but it’s not bitter at all so tolerable to me. Haven’t tasted mate on it’s own, so not sure if that would be giving it that undertone (of coffee?), but don’t see anything else on list that could be doing it. Hmmmm, maybe it’s the hazelnut …

There are things I like and don’t like about this blend. Overall, I can drink it. The coconut and chocolate are becoming apparent, but the hazelnut has too much of a role here (for my personal tastes). IF you love hazelnut chocolate, give this tea a try … in that respect, it’s very good.

Even though I don’t really like “Chocolatey teas” (too sweet or artificial tasting sometimes) , this is a very good Chocolate/Oolong with subtle notes of coconut!! The smokey notes of the Oolong blend very well with the chocolate and Coconut. Very warm and inviting taste that has a very tropical feeling without being over the top “Chocolatey” !!

A Teavana finally opened in a nearby city! I kind of failed at life though and forgot to check out the reviews here and make a list before going to the mall, so I had to wing it. I’ve been wanting to expand my oolong selection so this automatically grabbed my attention when I saw this in the store. The decant aroma of chocolate and coconut wafted from the giant tin of this, and I just had to have it.

The dry leaf is quite attractive. There are carob pieces, big beautiful shreds of coconut, and rose petals.

Steeped, the liquor is lighter than expected. And when it come to the aroma, it reminds me of the coconut truffles I made a couple Christmases ago.

Onto the taste. I can detect hints of chocolate, coconut, and nuts. It makes me think of a flavoured coffee creamer. The flavours really work with the oolong.

Next time, I’ll use more dry leaf but overall, I am very happy with this tea.

ETA: I have noticed though that this tea is rather weak, even when you add more dry leaf, so I’m lowering my rating. For the price, there should be more flavour.

i did cream and sugar this one. the smell is incredible. the taste (on this first brew)was not what i had hoped it would be. i’m going to chalk that up to possible operator error. i really like a long steep, especially for a robust tea like this one and i think i may have cut off my steep time. thus far i find this to be a god tea, but not a great one as i was expecting…but i hope my mark will be adjusted.

what is interesting about this tea: i have a heavy brown layer visible through my clear tea cup. if i’m judging by bouquet alone then i am absolutely convinced. once it’s steeped: the chestnut has a significant presence! it makes for a very nice, rich, stable base…. an exotic neutral, if you will.

sadly, at the moment i cannot see having this blend without cream and sugar… but that may change. stay tuned!

UPDATE: for reasons i cannot fathom this tea was loads better on the second steep?!! i have no idea what toned down or how i managed it, but the second steep makes aaaaaall the difference. happily, i am increasing my initial rating! again, the chestnut base in this blend is divine.

Rant: Ok, I bought this tea originally to trade with, along with a few others. I was going to the mall in Orlando that weekend so I decided to buy some teas from Teavana at the store. That way I could get 1oz of tea flavors versus having to buy a minimum of 2oz online, which I can understand; also this way I could get more flavors for the same price. When I went into the store I notice that they had made it larger, which was nice since it was crampt before. As always me and my freind walked around, tried some samples, looked at the pretty teaware, ect. I haven’t been there alot, but they seemed more car sales-y… more pushy. I don’t blame them though(I will say why later). So when I made my way up to the counter, the first flavor I wanted the standard 2oz. However, when I wanted 1oz of the next flavor, they said that I had to buy a minimum of 2oz of each flavor. I was shocked and annoyed! I mean I get why it is like that online, but in the STORE!? It just doesn’t make any sense to me, and really left me feeling sour. I kinda wonder if all Teavanas are like this. I over heard the employ that served me tell the cashier, who I think was in charge, that she told me I had to buy 2oz(I have ninja ears). I also noticed that at the bottom of the receipt it said that I was sold a total of 4 units….. for 2 different 2oz teas… 1oz=1 unit. The reason they are like this though, is because in order for employees to get hours they have to sell a certain number of units or bring in around $50. If they don’t they get little to no hours. That being said, this policy completely contradicts their mission statement. They are kinda like a friend that you slowly start to realize isn’t the best kind of friend you want, but they introduced you to other new and better people. In this case, they introduced loose teas to me, but I have found them to be a little mediocre and to full of themselves. I will buy from them in the future, but not anytime soon…

Tea Time:
The smell of this tea is very… interesting. Kinda musky, chocolaty, and coconuty. The brew it makes is a deep and nice yellow. The taste is kinda weird, but in a good way. I haven’t tried a lot of oolongs so it is hard to compare it or know what kind of oolong they used. It taste very coco/chicoryish with coconut. I don’t taste much floral notes though. I will say though that it has a kinda stuffy air and taste about it.

So far I have been able to get 2 steepings out of it, and will see if I can get a third. Even if I can’t get a third, at least you can get two which makes the price not seem as steep.

Overall I would recommend this to someone who likes coconut or chocolate type of flavors.

This tea engulfs you in coconut aroma bliss. The smell of coconut is very potent from opening the bag to steeping. There are chocolate details in there somewhere, but the coconut is most prominent.

My first sip really surprised me. I didn’t expect this tea to be so creamy. The chocolate taste and nutty flavors are there, but I am quite thankful the coconut is still prominent in taste as well, it gives a bit of a sweeter flavor to it’s striking coffee similarity. The rose and licorice are quite faint in the background, which is ok, as they do not need to be big flavors in this already deliciously milky tea.

After getting repeatedly disappointed with coffee extract tea blends from another company, Teavana seem to know how to make coffee alternatives without actually putting one bit of coffee in their teas. This tea has all the right elements for a pitch perfect blend that both coffee and tea drinkers will enjoy.

I was in Teavana today, and I decided to order a cup to go because I’ve been contemplating adding this tea to my collection, and what do you know…it was DELICIOUS and I’m surely going back for more.

The only concern I have is, since Teavana made it, I feel like they did their ~magic and it’s going to end up not as good as they made it when I take it home. I’m hoping that isn’t the case, because I loved it!

This tastes great; the chocolate is there but it isn’t too overwhelming, but it’s present enough that it will satisfy your sweet tooth after dinner. I noticed the coconut although I didn’t notice the rose. I’ve never tried oolong tea but I thought it was divine, and apparently it can help aid in digestion, which is nice. The chocolate flavoring didn’t overwhelm the tea and it almost tasted like a lighter version of hot chocolate (but yummy!).

I asked for medium sweetening, and I believe they sweetened it with German rock sugar which really brought out the flavors. I’m not sure if it would taste as good without any flavoring, but I do think a little milk would make it creamier and it MIGHT make for a good latte. But I never make lattes, so what do I know? Lol.

Anyway, I’m going to go pick this up next time I’m around the mall and hope that it doesn’t let me down at home!

So I made yet another trip to the mall today…and of course was baited with tea! How can I say no when I did so well on my most recent test and have been trying to cheer myself up? The workers were much more helpful today. My sister and I got to smell almost every one of the new teas. Some that I thought I would have enjoyed in theory didn’t really spark my interest in the store. This one was something that I never thought I’d actually enjoy. But here I am, sipping away happily. I’m trying to make sure I go in that money trap with a plan. :p I like to try and figure out what I’d like before I ever show up or else they’re going to have my wallet!
I was surprised to see this tea because the photos I saw of it online had rose petals. The tea that I was sold did not. This wasn’t a huge deal for me because, quite frankly, I wouldn’t want any rose/flower taste in this blend. What I was happy to smell was coconut. It was a bit more on the chemical smelling side for sure. But man, this hits the spot for some reason. The chocolate is there but I think that I can tell that this is a flavored oil as opposed to chocolate nibs. The ingredient list says there’s chocolate but the flavor profile of chocolate oil is very different than the actual item; which is why I’m a bit suspicious. Either way, the flavors blend well together. The only complaint I think some people would have is that this is something that I would expect more in a black tea. Maybe it’s simply because the flavor completely overwhelms the oolong. If I didn’t know there was oolong in this I frankly wouldn’t have known.
Overall this was a very nice tasting blend that would be able to keep the strongest of my chocolate/sweet treat temptations at bay. Well played Teavana, well played…

What can I say? Most of the teas I have purchased from Teavana were based off whichever had the yummiest scent (especially since they practically waft the tea into your face). I cannot say that has worked out for me so far, but this tea in particular has a mixture that doesn’t necessarily conflict with all of the ingredients that are included. The dry tea in the tin is.. chunky. Huge chunks of coconut, and whatever else they felt was necessary abound, and I wonder how any tea manages to make it into the infuser to steep. The brewed tea itself is milky, and the flavors are definitely not as strong. I can taste the ‘inspiration’ of Hawaiian chocolate cake, or at least for me, I like to pretend I’m in Hawaii while drinking it. Maybe an extra scoop of tea will make it more flavorful..

The name for this one gets your hopes up that its going to be this decadent, delicious foody tea. Even if you get past the name, this is the most disappointing tea I’ve drank thus far. It’s thin, weak, and flat. I added 2-3 times the recommended amount of tea to the water and still got almost no flavor. It’s weakly flavored coconut water, and nothing more. It doesn’t taste like tea, chocolate, or anything else. Just wishy washy coconut. Very disappointing, but happily I’ve found other fabulous teas to satisfy my chocolate sweet tooth.

Excellent tea. Chocolatey with a very roasted flavor. I normally don’t like ginger in teas, but I can’t really taste it unless I steep for over 3 minutes. Unfortunately it loses most of its magic after the first steeping. The second steep was rather weak and not very chocolatey, but still retained the roasted flavor. Prepared with milk and stevia.

I love oolong, chocolate, and coconut, so this tea is naturally a blessing to me. It’s not very bold but more subtle- I mostly taste the chocolate with slight undertones of coconut and a very faint hint of rose. It is pretty light, even for my taste (I tend to like light flavors), but I think I’m going to try adding some of my coconut tea in to see if I can boost that flavor. I may even try to blend it with some strawberry and see what happens. I see great potential in this teas mixing ability, but it’s decent on its own too.

Yesterday I found myself back at the mall and once again I was drawn to the Teavana store “just to look”. I don’t know if the sales people are very good or I’m just an easy sell. In any event, this time I purchased the Slimful Chocolate Decadence blend. All you have to do is mention chocolate and my wallet seems to pop out of my pocket. This is my first experience with oolong tea. Following Teavana’s instructions, I brewed it at 195 degrees for three minutes. The flavor is an agreeable combination of chocolate and ginger. As Tamm commented, I did not see or taste the presence of rose petals in my selection. Maybe it’s because I’m not used to oolong yet, but the flavor power of this tea is weaker than my preference, particularly early in the morning when I’m trying to slap awake my brain and tastebuds. Am I sorry I purchased it? No. Do I like it? Yes. Will I drink it again? Yes. Next time, though, I will experiment with brewing it a little longer or adding more tea.
