Another Teavana tea of the month for March. (Hmm. Wonder when April’s teas will show up?)

And another I would not have selected were it not a tea of the month club offering. Confession time: I am no longer sure how I feel about rooibos (but don’t let rooibos know, k?).

When I first started trying to become a tea drinker, I liked it quite a bit. I think I liked it because it was (a) different from other drinks I’d had, and therefore novel, and (b) such a good flavor enabler. It may be particularly attractive to recent converts because it forms the backbone of so many interesting sounding drinks that, when you’re first getting your feet wet after less than stellar experiences, sound appealing because it’s almost like not drinking a tea-like beverage. Like Rootbeer Float and Tiramisu. The more excellent loose leaf Camellia Sinensis I drink, the less appeal these frou-frou approximations of existing beverages or foods have, though I remain a sucker for a good flavored black tea.

So say what you will about it, rooibos does have the very endearing quality of being an excellent backdrop. It’s the tofu of the tea world. It doesn’t have a strong flavor of its own, and the flavor that it has is mild and neutral. So it basically takes on the flavor of whatever is next to it. It loves the one it’s with.

Mostly, successful rooibos blends seem to be about the proportion of whatever the other flavor is to the rooibos. At least, I find the more successful ones to be those that sit the rooibos in the corner and don’t let it talk too much.

And that is why I find Rooibos Tropica to be a successful blend. It has a wonderful strawberry/peach smell when dry and is pretty to look at. It looks like dried rosemary dotted with blue, white and reddish-purple flower petals. (I agree with the quiet life, I don’t think there is any red rooibos in there. The ingredients on the bag don’t list it. Maybe they did change the blend.) When infused, the aroma is strawberry, peach, and a somewhat green note which could be from the rooibos, or the flower petals, or both.

It doesn’t seem that sweet to me, though strawberry is definitely present in the flavor and I’m finding Teavana’s strawberry to provide some degree of sweetness to their blends. Without the strawberry, I don’t think it would be at all sweet. If I try really hard I can taste something that seems like peach, and something that seems like orange. But what I find interesting about the flavor is that the ingredients together have some sort of synergy going on, where the sum of the individual parts is greater and different than the whole. As a whole, it’s a tutti-frutti mixture that suggests mango, pineapple, even banana — basically all the fruits you’d find on Carmen Miranda’s hats — even though none of those are identified as ingredients. And the rooibos is sitting in the corner, quietly, exactly as it should be.

So this gets a high rating for being an excellent example of its genre. Tied with the SpecialTeas Rooibos Lemon Chiffon, which I have not had in a while and need to revisit to see if recalibration is in order. However, whether I buy more is still an open question given my current doubts about my relationship with rooibos.

sample sipdown from fiddling! (285) this is a totally uninteresting boring rooibos to me. sure it’s got some fruity aspects going on but over all it’s like that friend you have where they tag along sometimes and you don’t mind seeing them but there’s never any OMG I MISS YOU! WHY HAVEN’T I SEEN YOU IN FOREVER! it’s just kinda like “hey…what’s up…cool beans, yo!”
yeah. that’s my story. lol

Thanks ToiToi! The first time I had this one I didn’t really like it. But when I got it in a swap I thought….. Why not. So here I am, drinking Rooibos Tropica. It’s ok. It has a nice fruity flavor. But it’s just not that impressive.

This is a nice, sweet Rooibos. As other tasting notes indicate, people like this tea. I simply cannot get aroused by a nice Rooibos, sweet or otherwise. But I am always delighted to try new teas. I’d like to get a really full scope of what I am rejecting (or accepting) before I make any final verdicts or slam the door shut on something that I might enjoy.

Little splinters of Rooibos tea make up the dry tea blend; you can see small flecks of dried strawberry, but it is mostly rooibos tea. The dried leaves smell strongly like strawberry with a note of tea. The aroma of the brewed tea (hot, with no additives) smells strongly like strawberry with some citrus and peach aromas. The flavor is mild; rooibos with some strawberry and peach flavors. I brewed for a full six minutes which might have made the tropical fruits a little tart. However, I would call the tea mild, there is no overwhelming sweetness or tartness. Longer infusion time would probably make the tea more tart and adding sugar would make the tea more sweet.

Overall, I do not think this tea actually needs anything. It is pretty good in that it is mild with hints of tropical fruit flavors. I can see how this would make a nice blend with a green or a jasmine tea, but I think the tea was fine on it’s own.

Running low on this tea, so I thought I’d drink some this morning to help the supply dwindle a little more (not that I don’t like this tea or want it around—I just could use the tin space xD). It was pleasant as always, with that awesome nutty flavor from long-steeped rooibos. I’ve been steeping all rooibos teas a little longer than normal recently, and have had good results. I approve of the almost pecan-like flavor that sits on your tongue like a contentedly napping cat. :)

Anyway, I’ll make this one short. I love this tea, as it pairs beautifully with way more teas than Teavana lists here. I’ll probably get more eventually, just right now there are more pressing matters. Like tin space. Since moving in with the new hubby, I’ve discovered that we’re going to have to create a space outside of our tiny pantry in which to store tea, because there’s just not room for it all. Combined, we probably have around 70. It’s kind of mind blowing.

The first tea I bought in years from Teavana! I find it to be very balanced with the fruity notes and the tangy and earthy flavors of the Rooibos that I do not not need to sweetened the tea at all. A touch of the paradise and sweet smell of tropical flair just whisks you off to turquoise blue waters on an a stretch of white sand beach in a cool humid day! I could just feel the breeze blowing in from the Caribbean sea just about now…

It is a good fruity tea. A bit strong on the fruit, so I added a little vanilla.

I’m trying to think of something interesting to say about this tea, but struggling. It’s a light, pleasant, fruity cup, not wildly exciting or complex, but nice. For me that is something special in that I’ve never been much of a fan of rooibos, so anything that can get me to find it pleasant is a bit of a gem. I’m always looking for new caffeine-free teas. I think I will enjoy drinking my 2oz of this but the jury is still out on whether I will buy it again when it is gone.

Delicious! Good for sugar cravings. It reminds me of Juicy Fruit gum!

This isn’t bad. But, after smelling it dry I was expecting more. This seems to get pretty positive reviews, so maybe I should try steeping differently (for less time?). I agree with whoever mentioned that it tastes medicinal once brewed. There is one taste in there that’s distracting me as all I can think is GINGER. There is none in here so I don’t know what’s going on. Will try it both iced and with a splash of milk as that often works well for me with rooibos.

So I had this again last night. I don’t know how I tasted ginger last time and it didn’t taste medicinal on my second try, but it was pretty thoroughly underwhelming. And a bit tart. I kept thinking there was beetroot in it (the colour and flavour seemed right) but it must be the rhubarb coming through. I don’t really get the tropical flavours, even with using quite a lot more of it and steeping for 6 minutes.

I wouldn’t buy this again. It’s drinkable but really boring. To finish it off I’ll try steeping for less time to see if that changes the flavours, and probably just mixing it with other teas.

The citrus fruits come are very subtle in this one. It seems to be a very relaxing drink with no overwhelming flavors. Just a gentle rooibos with strawberry and peach being the most prodominate flavors in this cup. Not that any specific flavor dominates this tea. It is just a nice blend. I made enough for two cups so we will see if I still feel the same in a bit.

I make this stronger every time I make it and it just gets better and better.

This time I made this one a little stronger. The fruit really stands out more but it remains smooth and doesn’t become tart or tangy. Just really good.

Yes, Yes, Yes. Just as good this time. I find this tea soothing.

This tea is pleasingly sweet and fruity and blends very well with jasmine pearls.

This tea is okay… The dry leaf is nice, though the cut-off rosebuds remind me of Morticia Addams cutting off the roses in the Addams Family movie. The taste is another thing. It definitely tastes tropical… More of an upscale tropical-type feeling though, not the normal “tropical punch” flavor. The sweet, red cold medicine flavor of the rooibos comes through, and its fine, but probably not a blend I’d buy again. I’ll save it for when I’m sick and can appreciate it.

Thank you SoccerMom for this gift.

I have a head cold and have slept through the past two days entirely. I hate wasting vacation to sleep but I didn’t have much choice. As a result I can’t hear, smell or taste very well and I’m woozy. So take this review with that in mind. Usually we prepare this with sugar and jasmine pearls. Being sick i was not in the mood to fuss with anything, nor to have caffeine so I decided to try this plain. MilitiaJim made it for me so I didn’t sneeze on it.

The tea had a lot of particulate in it – not a bad thing, just a note, we were using a mesh wire infuser basket.

I enjoy this more with sweetener and the jasmine pearls, but I think it might just as well be improved by sweetener and iced.

Post-Steep Additives: none

Resteep: too tired to try

Yum!! This tea is really delicious and refreshing. I bet it would taste great iced, too!

I added a little bit of Teavana’s South African Rooibos to it, too, and it makes the fruitiness a little bit more subtle. I also like the flavor the red rooibos adds to this. (The summary of this tea says there’s red rooibos in it already, but the bag it came in says there’s only green. Hmm.)

Anyway, this is exactly what I didn’t even know I was in the mood for today!

Home with a bug today, so I wanted something caffeine-free. The dry rooibos smells primarily of strawberry, but once infused, scents of peach and citrus notes really develop. I added a bit of rock sugar while infusing which helped to enhance the fruitiness. This is tart with a sweetness, warming and comforting. A good choice.

My favorite rooibos! Really fantastic as an iced tea. Highly recommended – even if you don’t think you’d like rooibos :)

Enjoying this iced today! It has such a cheerful, fruit flavor and it really does help with my allergies (like all rooibos). I highly recommend it to allergy sufferers :)

Moving into iced teas now that spring has finally arrived…still favor hot tea in the morning and on rainy days, which we’ve had plenty of. This is my go-to iced tea, delicately floral, no caffeine. I drank the entire pitcher yesterday and had to make more this morning :)

Average tea. Tastes ok, but not a very powerful flavor compared to the smell…rather subtle. Still ok though; would be best paired up with another tea

Most definitely my favorite rooibos tea! The fruity flavor is fresh and prominent, not too overpowering or too sweet, JUST RIGHT. I love to blend it with oolong and green teas! It’s also really pretty to look at. BONUS POINTS!
