Tea sample provided by Teavivre for review

I decided to drink this today since I already tried the other jasmine green tea. Anyway, looking and sniffing inside the pouch my expectations are met. I think the aroma from the other tea was a bit more enticing, but maybe I’m just having a jasmine overload. ;)

The pearls did not unfurl on the first steep, but nevertheless it was an enjoyable peek at what the leaves were capable of. Delicate green tea, light jasmine flavour, a bit of spice, and an overall smooth experience.

On the second steep, they unfurled a bit more. The green tea has a nice flavour, not bitter and still delicate.

Third and fourth steeps brought more of the same flavour, with the addition of a menthol/mint feeling.

Fifth steep was enjoyable, but I mostly taste the jasmine.

I finished on the sixth steep, which was quite mild but still had some flavour. It could resteep more but I feel satisfied with these six.

So far I prefer Mo Li Yin Hao ever so slightly, but both are very solid jasmine green teas. If you prefer something nice to show guests, I recommend the pearls in a glass vessel. And the delicate nature of this tea would definitely be good with fruits, salads or desserts. Personally I love this sort of tea with Ontario coronation grapes (too bad they’re out of season now!)

100ml gaiwan, 1 generous tsp, 6 steeps.

Another yummy tea from TeaVivre! Dragon Pearl Jasmine teas (really, jasmine greens in general) are among my favorites. I’ve yet to drink one I didn’t like. And I’ve yet to try a TeaVivre tea I didn’t like, so I was pretty much guaranteed to love this one.

First off, this is delicious. Mine came out a gorgeous golden-green color, smells beautiful, and has a lovely, light flavor with floral overtones. I don’t find the jasmine as strong in this cup as I have in other DPJs, and as a jasmine fan, that was a little disappointing. It’s definitely still there — and it adds a wonderful sweetness to every sip — but it’s not as strong as I would like.

That said, I tend to like very strong teas, and there are a ton of really strongly flavored DPJs out there, so I think this one fills a niche that needs to be filled: A lightly flavored, more balanced and very yummy cup. Those who like a little less jasmine and a little more tea will love it.

After the first cup, I got a bit distracted and the second was lukewarm. It was still tasty! And I bet it would be good iced, too.

YAY jasmine! These are delicious and delicate in flavour, and overall very lovely. I steeped it a bit on the weak side (1.5 tsp pearls in 500ml mug), but I’ll be re-steeping these throughout the night. I’m not getting any soapy taste at all, and I can’t stop sniffing the wet leaves. This sample will be gone in no time!

Update: I’m on the third steep of these leaves (leftover from the wee hours of this morning). The jasmine flavour is so light but still flavourful. A bit of astringency is coming through now, but not enough to keep me away.

I first enjoy tea with its looks, then I smell it, then I drink it. So that’s how I’m reviewing my teas.

Update: I find myself reaching for this one again and again. For me, the sweetness is irresistible. It’s my “I need a looong quiet sip to escape the madness” tea.

Looks: Very very light green toward yellow. The pearls unfurl into a bunch of twisted buds that look like tiny dragons battling it out in your cup. I have to resteep at least 3 times to get the leaves to fully unfurl due to the quick steeping time of this tea.

Fragrance: The jasmine scent is mellow and well rounded. Sometimes jasmines can get cloying with its high notes, but this tea was fantastic. The best I can describe is that it is a sweet, warm jasmine fragrance. Like getting a hug from a big jasmine flower.

Taste: Mild vegetal flavour with slight sweetness. A quick steep is necessary to get a good brew. I have accidentally steeped too hot as well as too long and either way results in an overly astringent tea. It was not undrinkably bitter, but not too tasty either.

Brewing note: I find a quick rinse of the tea helps greatly with the flavour of the first steep.

This tea was delicious- very smooth and sweet, as well as floral and light. It seemed to have a stronger taste of jasmine than other jasmine dragon pearls I have tried, which I enjoyed very much. This is a good tea for any time of day, and I would highly recommend it.

Dry Leaf: Has a Lovely all natural jasmine flower scent.
Wet Leaf: Has a light natural jasmine aroma with a slight vegetal smell in the background.
Liquor: Golden in color with a nice brightness to it and good clarity.
Taste: This tea has a light feel to it, with a touch of sweetness and a subtle jasmine flavor playing in the background. This tea also has a smooth body to it.
My Score/ Over All Opinion: 92, This teas in my humble opinion is comparable to Souvia’s jasmine downy pearls ( see that review) I would have gave same score but I feel it deserves a bit of an edge since their is a huge price difference between the teas. Also I want to add above says march 2011 production and my review is on the June 2011 production which may cause a slight difference in reviews.

Thank you Marie @ Teavivre for ending me this generous sample

How can you not appreciate the art & labor when a tea is rolled up into little balls? It’s beautiful to look at.
This brews really nice with a nice, light floral taste that compliments the green nicely. Great aroma, smooth. I’m going to drink this next time I cook Chinese and whenever I’m in the mood for something floral.

First of all, thanks to Teavivre for the free sample of this tea! It was another first for me, as while I have had jasmine teas, none of them had been pearls. Also, my previous jasmine teas have been from one of three sources: Stash, Yamamotoyama, or at Chinese restaurants. Needless, to say, this was a bit different.

The first infusion was very interesting, with a very pleasing jasmine aroma. It was "softer " than other jasmines I’ve had, and was much better than the Yamamotoyama jasmine that I have. The taste was also much better than the Yamamotoyama, with less astringency and bitterness. This is probably due to using a higher quality tea, as the Yamamotoyama appears to use cheap left-overs. It is also interesting to note that after the infusion, the leaves still loosely resembled pearls, which was interesting.

The second infusion was generally a bit weaker, but with a few exceptions. First, the tea tasted more flowery and sweeter. Also, an aftertaste on the tip of the tongue and the roof the the mouth became apparent. Thus aftertaste was a touch metallic and/or mineral, but still a bit flowery, and was generally very interesting, as my other jasmine teas do not exhibit such a characteristic.

I over steeped the third infusion, and there was a touch of astringency, and it wasn’t as sweet as the previous infusion. The aftertaste also strengthened and became a touch bitter. The forth infusion was rather plain, and even the scent seemed lacking by this point. The sweetness had also all but disappeared, leaving very little in the way of taste.

All in all, it’s the best jasmine tea I’ve had in a while, and was very pleasant. It also lasted a bit longer than my Yamamotoyama jasmine, which was a pleasant surprise. Anyway, I’m actually considering purchasing some of this in the future, after my other jasmine stock runs out.

From the packaging to the last drop and everything in between, Teavivre’s Premium Jasmine pearls are great. Opening the pouch released a fresh scent of intense Jasmine that begged to be steeped. These have become my staple Jasmine pearl after trying many types. I use about 25 pearls in my 4oz Gaiwan and get three steeps reliably from it. This tea totally lacks astringency, so I am able to steep for longer than I’d try with more delicate teas (8 minutes) with the result being very intense and sweet Jasmine tea over two steeps. I’ve really grown accustomed to this wonderful intensity and spend as much time with my teacup under my nose as on my lips. The taste and aromatherapy are equally wonderful. Along with a full Jasmine flavor, there is an underlying toasty tea flavor and a curiously grape-like note. I could drink this non-stop.
